Haldi Sarees: What to Wear to a Haldi Ceremony

A haldi saree has three jobs: stay cool through a daytime ceremony, let you sit on the floor and move freely, and cope with a little turmeric. Yellow is the classic colour, and our yellow sarees for haldi run from lemon to mustard, but many brides, sisters and guests now wear pink, orange, peach, green or lavender as well. Haldi Saree for the Bride

A simple saree usually works well for the bride, because the floral jewellery, the paste and the photographs do the rest. The paste goes on her face, arms and feet, so choose a saree you do not mind marking. A plain yellow mul cotton such as Lemonade (₹1,699) is the easiest choice: it is light, it does not compete with flowers, and it takes a gentle cold hand wash afterwards. Amber, a plain yellow mul modal (₹1,899), is a little smoother and comes with a 1 m running blouse piece.

If you want something dressier for the photographs before the paste goes on, Sunkissed is a yellow mul cotton with lotus motifs and touches of red and green, and Vintage Yellow is a yellow and pink floral printed chiffon with hand embroidered sequins and a 1 m crepe blouse piece. Both should be dry cleaned, so if you wear one, change into a plainer saree for the ritual itself.

For the Bride's Sisters, Mother and Family

Sisters and bridesmaids: coordinate with the bride in printed pure chiffon. Haldi Saree for Guests

If you will be close to the paste, choose washable mul cotton: Harvest Sun, a yellow gingham mul cotton at ₹2,199, takes a gentle cold hand wash, and Outlook is a yellow striped mul cotton. If you will watch from further back, a printed pure chiffon such as Sun Shower or Eden (both ₹3,999), or Sunlit Rose, a mustard yellow floral (₹4,499), looks dressier. Some guests choose a colour other than yellow so the family stands out in photographs; check with the hosts if there is a colour theme.

Haldi Colours Beyond Yellow

Turmeric Stains: Before and After

Turmeric marks quickly, especially on cotton. Wear a saree you are happy to wash, keep chiffon, tissue, linen and anything with zari away from the paste, and change into them after the ritual if you want both.
