Saree for Convocation: White and Off-White Looks for Graduation Day

Beige pure handloom linen saree with zari border by MAYIN

For a convocation, wear a white, off-white or cream saree in a light, breathable fabric with a narrow gold or coloured border, unless your institute’s dress code says otherwise. Read the code first: many Indian universities and institutes now publish one. A plain mul cotton or handloom linen saree with a sleeved blouse sits neatly under the stole or gown and stays comfortable through a long ceremony. This guide covers why convocations moved to Indian attire, real dress codes, colours, fabric by season, the stole, the blouse, draping for the stage, looks for graduates and parents, and budget.

Why Convocations Moved to Indian Attire

For most of the last century, Indian convocations borrowed the black gown and cap from British universities. Since 2009 that has been changing, one institute at a time, and where an Indian dress code applies, a saree is usually one of the options for women graduates.

From gowns to handloom

Jan 2024UGC asks againRequests that universities consider handloom ceremonial dress
Aug 2024Health MinistryAsks central medical teaching institutes to design Indian dress codes

Two things are worth knowing before you shop. First, the University Grants Commission’s letters are requests, not rules. Each university decides, and many private colleges and some public ones still use gowns. Second, the Health Ministry’s letter of August 2024 went further for its own central medical and nursing teaching institutes, such as the AIIMS group, PGIMER Chandigarh and JIPMER: it asked each to design an Indian dress code for convocation based on the local traditions of its state, from the following academic session.

UGC’s reasons in 2019 were support for handloom weavers and ceremonial dress more comfortable in hot, humid weather. That is the useful part for you: institutes that ask for a saree mostly want a light, plain, handloom-look one, which is easier to wear and far less expensive than a heavy ceremonial saree.

Read Your Dress Code First

Institutes usually send the dress code with the convocation notice or post it on their convocation page. Here is the range from recent notices. Codes change from year to year, so treat these as examples of what to expect, not as your rules.

What recent notices asked women graduates to wear
Institute and noticeSaree asked forAlso noted
AIIMS Raipur, 2024Off-white saree with a golden border, “formal and not flashy”Sleeved blouse, sandals that do not make noise, no flashy jewellery or bangles, rehearsal the day before, no phones
IIT Kharagpur, 2023Plain white cotton saree with a narrow gold zari border and plain palluParsi style drape, white petticoat; the institute later clarified the code was not mandatory
IIT Bhubaneswar, 2024Saree with a golden borderOff-white preferred, then white, then cream
IIT Kanpur, 2025Cream sareeColour-coded stole from the institute; graduates not in the code may not be admitted
BHU, December 2024White saree with a red border and a red blouseYellow uttariya supplied
NIT Calicut, 2026Off-white saree, or a Kerala-style off-white sareeAngavastra provided
Christ University, Bengaluru, 2026White or off-white sareeCodes can differ by session, so check your brochure
Jharkhand University of Technology, 2025Off-white or pale creamOptional light jacket in a matching colour for the winter ceremony

The pattern is clear: white, off-white or cream, a narrow gold border, a sleeved blouse and nothing loud. The stole, angavastram or uttariya in your programme colour is usually supplied by the institute, so your saree only needs to be plain enough to sit quietly under it. If your notice simply says “formal Indian attire”, any of the light shades in this guide will fit.

Reading the words in a dress code
WhiteThe brightest shade, with no yellow in it. Looks crisp, and needs a border or blouse for contrast in photos.
Off-whiteWhite with a little warmth. The most requested shade, and the kindest to most skin tones.
Ivory and creamWarmer again, with a soft yellow tone. If the code says cream, ivory is usually closer than pure white.
Golden borderA narrow woven gold or zari edge. A wide, heavy border is more than most codes want.
Plain palluNo large motifs or heavy work on the pallu, which would fight the stole.
Kerala-styleAn off-white saree with a gold border in the kasavu tradition. See our Onam saree guide.

CA, CS and other professional convocations

ICAI held its 2026 convocation on 12 September across 23 cities, and reports describe the invitations as asking for formal attire, without naming a saree colour. Check your own invitation email. Otherwise dress as for an important meeting: a plain, light saree, a structured blouse and minimal jewellery. Our formal sarees for interviews and meetings and the formal saree guide cover that look.

Colours That Work

White, off-white and cream look almost the same on a phone screen and quite different on a stage. Under bright stage lights and camera flash, pure white can look flat and lose its detail, while off-white and ivory keep a little warmth. Whichever shade you choose, give it one point of contrast, a border, a blouse colour or a lip colour, so you do not disappear into the backdrop or the stole.

Convocation shades and blouse colours
Off-white
TrySkip
Gold, maroon, red. Skip silver. The most requested shade. Silver clashes with the gold borders most codes ask for.
Ivory
TrySkip
Gold, bottle green, maroon. Skip black. Soft and warm, and lovely with a gold zari border. Black looks harsh against ivory under stage lights.
Cream
TrySkip
Gold, maroon, navy. Skip yellow. A yellow blouse makes cream look faded; go deeper instead.
White
TrySkip
Red, gold, navy. Skip beige. White with a red border and red blouse was BHU’s code in December 2024. Beige next to white looks dull.
Beige
TrySkip
Gold, maroon, ivory. Skip grey. For codes that say light or neutral, and for parents. Grey next to beige makes both look muddy.
Powder blue
TrySkip
Silver, white, navy. Skip orange. For institutes without a colour code, the party after, and parents. Bright orange fights the cool blue.

White with a red border

White with a red border is a much-loved combination in Bengal and across eastern India, and BHU asked for a white saree with a red border and a red blouse in its December 2024 notice. Kamakshi is white mul cotton with a red border and a gold zari edge at ₹1,799; compare its border with your own notice before you order. Some families simply prefer a coloured border on white for a celebration; that suits codes that ask only for white or a light colour, but if your code names a golden border, choose gold.

Blue, black or another colour?

With no colour code, or under a gown, you have more freedom. Blue is the easiest step away from white. Cobalt Crumble is a plain blue mul cotton saree at ₹1,699, and Florina is a navy floral print pure chiffon at ₹3,999 for the party afterwards. Black is fine where there is no code, but under a black gown it disappears, and some families prefer to avoid it for a ceremony. After Dark in plain black mul cotton suits the party better than the stage.

Fabric for the Season and a Long Ceremony

Convocations happen all through the year, from summer ceremonies in May and June to winter ones in December and January. You may sit in a packed, warm hall in June or an air-conditioned auditorium in December, often for two to four hours, then stand for photographs outside. Fabric matters more than anything else you choose.

Mul cotton: the easy choice

Kamakshi white mul cotton saree with red border and gold zari edge by MAYIN

Mul cotton, or mulmul, is soft, light and breathable, and it pleats into a slim drape that sits flat under a stole. Kamakshi (₹1,799) is white mul cotton with a red border and a gold zari edge, for families who want colour on white; the zari means dry clean only. Devi (₹1,999) is white mul cotton with gold and red detailing, and can be hand washed in cold water. Bright Side is white with a yellow border and Salt Air is seafoam white with a lime border, both ₹1,999, for institutes that allow a coloured edge. Rangam (₹2,499) is white handwoven mul cotton with fine stripes, for a code that says only white. Mul cotton sarees come without a blouse piece, so plan the blouse separately. Read more in what is a mul cotton saree.

Handloom linen: crisp and structured

If your code asks for off-white with a golden border, or you want the saree to hold its shape and look a little more formal, handloom linen is the answer, and it fits the handloom spirit of the UGC request. The Go to is ivory pure handloom linen with a zari border, the closest match in our range to that brief, and Beige is the same weave in a warm beige; both are ₹4,299 and come with a 1 metre blouse piece. Linen creases more than mul cotton, so press it the night before. Linen breathes well in heat, but it is not a warm fabric. More in what is a linen saree.

Chiffon, jamdani and tissue

Pure chiffon is the lightest option and drapes neatly under a gown. Our pure chiffon sarees are 100% Bemberg and come with a 1 metre crepe blouse piece; the current range is printed, mostly florals and checks in colour, so it suits institutes without a colour code, the celebration afterwards and parents better than a white-and-gold code. Try Slow Sunday in powder blue gingham print or Solenne in lavender florals. Frangipani is a beige chiffon with hand painted flowers at ₹3,499, soft enough for a mother’s look. Dhakai jamdani and cotton tissue suit a PhD or medal ceremony if your code allows colour, a little sheen or motif.

Summer and winter ceremonies

In summer, choose mul cotton, mul modal or linen with a cotton blouse. In winter, the layer matters more than the saree: a pale shawl or a light jacket in a matching colour, if your notice allows one, as Jharkhand University of Technology’s did. For warmth in a cold North Indian hall, mul modal in a deeper colour layers better than linen, but only where the code leaves you free to choose colour. Our winter saree looks cover layering.

Wearing a Saree Under a Stole or Gown

Most convocations add something on top: a stole, angavastram or uttariya in your programme colour, or a gown. Plan for what still shows and keep the rest flat.

Planning around what goes on top
With a stole or angavastram
●Pleat the pallu narrow, four or five folds, and pin it flat at the left shoulder so the stole lies over it smoothly.
●Keep the pallu a little shorter than usual, around knee length, so it does not tangle with the stole ends.
●Skip a heavy or embellished pallu: it adds bulk and the stole hides it anyway.
●Ask at the rehearsal how the stole is worn; some go round the neck, some over one shoulder.
Under a gown
●What shows: your neckline, the blouse sleeves at the cuffs of the gown, the hem and your feet.
●Choose a blouse neckline that sits neatly at the gown’s opening, such as a boat or high neck.
●Pin the pallu flat, or tuck its end in at the waist, so it does not bunch under the gown.
●A light fabric such as mul cotton or chiffon stops you overheating under two layers.

If your notice names a particular drape, such as the Parsi style IIT Kharagpur asked for in 2023, practise it a few days before with a friend or family member. Our guide to saree draping styles walks through the main ones.

The Blouse: Sleeves and Neckline

Codes that mention the blouse usually ask for sleeves; elbow or three-quarter sleeves look the most formal. Under a stole or gown the neckline is what shows in every photograph, so keep it modest and clean: a boat neck, a high round neck or a short collar all sit well. A white or off-white blouse should be lined so it is not see-through under flash. For cut ideas, see our guides to blouse sleeve designs and blouse neck designs.

Draping for the Stage

Your walk to the dais takes less than a minute; a neat drape is mostly preparation.

From the night before to the dais
1
Use the rehearsalMany institutes hold a rehearsal the day before; AIIMS Raipur made it compulsory in 2024. Wear the saree, or one like it, so you can test the stairs, the seating and the stole.
2
Pre-pleat the night beforeFold the pleats and pallu and pin them, then leave the saree folded overnight. A tailor can stitch the pleats of a light everyday saree, but handwoven, zari, tissue and embroidered sarees should be pre-pleated: folded and pinned, nothing sewn.
3
Tuck five to seven pleatsTuck the pleats in at the navel, facing left, and pin them together just below the tuck so they hold through hours of sitting.
4
Set the hem for stairsLet the hem just clear the floor in the footwear you will wear, so you can climb the dais steps without lifting the pleats far.
5
Choose the right petticoatMatch the petticoat to the saree where you can; if you have no match on a light saree, nude usually shows less than white. Check in daylight before the day.
6
Keep your right hand freeOn the steps, hold the pleats lightly with your left hand. Your right hand is then free for the handshake and the degree.

A new draper can start with our step-by-step guide to draping a mul cotton saree. If you would rather skip pleating altogether, a pre-draped saree is an option; see the pre-draped saree guide, and check that your code does not ask for a particular drape.

What to carry on the day
Your convocation pass, ID and any form the institute asked for.
Eight to ten safety pins, plus a few spare in your bag.
A small shawl or light jacket in a pale colour for a cold hall, if the code allows it.
A handkerchief, lip colour and a comb; phones are not allowed inside some halls, so plan where your bag will stay.
Comfortable sandals you have already worn for a few hours.

Footwear, Jewellery, Hair and Photos

The finishing touches
FootwearFlat or block-heel sandals that grip the stairs and do not clatter; AIIMS Raipur asked for sandals that do not make noise. Break them in first.
JewellerySmall studs or jhumkas, a thin chain, a watch. Several codes say no flashy jewellery or bangles, which also keeps the stole sitting flat.
HairA low bun or neat braid keeps your neck clear for the stole and holds a cap, if one is supplied.
Bindi and makeupA small bindi and light, sweat-proof makeup that lasts a warm hall.
BagSmall or none. You may have to leave it outside, and you need your hands free on stage.
PhotosLet the border, blouse or lip give contrast against a white saree and a bright stage. Check in daylight that the saree is not sheer under flash.

What parents can wear

Parents rarely have a dress code, but if the graduate is in off-white, a mother in a soft colour stands out beside her in photographs instead of blending in. Composure in pink and Calm in lavender are pure handloom linen with zari borders at ₹4,299, and Lilac Blush in lavender and Fairy Tale in baby pink are plain mul cotton at ₹1,699. Mauve Melody in pink mul modal (₹1,899) has a softer fall and a running blouse piece. For a warm neutral, try Toasted Almond, a plain taupe brown mul cotton.

Budget and Timing

A plain code is good news for your budget: what most institutes ask for is a light, simple saree, not a heavy ceremonial one. All our sarees are 5.5 metres long and 45 inches wide, and any blouse piece is extra to that length.

Questions People Ask

Which colour saree is best for convocation?

Off-white, white or cream with a narrow gold or coloured border, unless your institute names another colour. Where there is no code, pastels such as powder blue and lavender also work.

Is it appropriate to wear a white saree to convocation?

Yes. White and off-white are what most Indian-attire dress codes ask for. Add contrast with a border or blouse so it does not look flat in photos.

Can I wear a black saree for convocation or graduation?

Only if there is no colour code. Under a black gown it disappears, and some families avoid black for ceremonies, so it suits the party afterwards better.

What is the best fabric for a convocation saree?

Mul cotton for comfort and price, or handloom linen for a crisper, more formal look. Both are breathable through a long ceremony.

Should a convocation saree have heavy work?

No. Most codes ask for something formal and not flashy, and a stole or gown covers much of the saree anyway. A narrow zari border is enough.

How do I wear a saree under a convocation gown?

Choose a light fabric, pin the pallu flat or tuck its end in at the waist, and pick a blouse neckline that sits neatly at the gown’s opening.

Where does the pallu go with a stole or angavastram?

On the left shoulder as usual, pleated narrow and pinned flat, so the stole lies smoothly over it. Ask at the rehearsal how the stole is worn.

What blouse should I wear with a convocation saree?

A lined blouse with elbow or three-quarter sleeves and a modest neckline, in off-white, gold or the border colour.

Can I wear a saree for CA convocation?

Yes. Reports of recent ICAI invitations describe formal attire, and a plain, light saree with a structured blouse fits that. Check your own invitation for any specific instructions.

What footwear goes with a saree on stage?

Flat or block-heel sandals with grip that do not make noise on the stage, worn in before the day.

What should my mother wear to my convocation?

A soft colour such as pink, lavender or powder blue, so she stands out beside an off-white graduate, in linen or mul cotton.

Can I wear a pre-draped saree for convocation?

Usually, yes, unless your code names a drape. It saves time on the morning, but try it on with the stole first.
