Saree Gift Guide: How to Choose a Saree She Will Actually Wear

Composure pink pure handloom linen saree with zari border by MAYIN

The best saree to gift is one she will actually wear: pick the fabric for how often she wears sarees and the climate she lives in, then pick a colour family she already wears and likes. A daily wearer will reach for a soft cotton again and again; someone who drapes a saree twice a year wants one festive piece; someone who rarely wears one needs a light fabric that is easy to drape. This guide covers ideas by person, occasions and dates, wedding customs, colours to choose when you do not know her taste, budgets, the blouse, wrapping, exchanges and gifting abroad.

Start With How Often She Wears Sarees

Start with one question: how often does she actually wear a saree? The answer tells you the fabric, and fabric decides whether a saree gets worn more than colour does.

Four kinds of saree wearer
1
She wears one most daysGive her another she will use: plain or zari striped mul cotton, or mul modal. Soft, breathable and easy to wash at home if it is plain.
2
She wears one for festivals and functionsGive one piece with a little occasion in it: a handloom linen with a zari border, a cotton tissue, a Dhakai jamdani or a printed pure chiffon.
3
She rarely wears oneChoose something forgiving to drape and light to wear: pure chiffon or mul modal. Both fall into pleats easily, and both come with a blouse piece, which removes one hurdle.
4
She has never worn oneThink about whether a saree is the right gift at all. If you are sure, pure chiffon in a colour she wears often is the gentlest start, and our guide on how to drape a chiffon saree helps.

Climate matters next: a fabric that is perfect in Chennai in May can feel thin in Delhi in January.

Fabric by climate
Where she livesFabrics that suitWhy
Hot and humid: coastal cities, the South, the EastMul cotton, mul modal, linenCool against the skin, breathable, comfortable through a long day.
Dry heat: North and Central India in summerMul cotton, linenLight and airy; linen stays crisp and lets air through.
Cold winters: the North from December to FebruaryMul modal in deeper colours; chiffon for evenings with a shawlMul modal layers well under a shawl or jacket; deep shades suit the season.
Air conditioned officesLinen, mul modalNeat enough for work and comfortable all day.

Age is a weaker guide than habit. Plenty of women in their sixties love a floral chiffon, and plenty in their twenties live in plain cotton. Let her wardrobe lead, not her birthday.

Ideas by Person

The relationship shapes the gift as much as the woman does. These are starting points, each with sarees we make.

Six people, six starting points
Mother
Maroon, teal, mustard
Something for real life: a mul modal such as True Garnet in maroon, or a zari striped mul cotton such as Saaz in green.
Mother-in-law
Ivory, gold, burgundy
Lean a little more formal than you would for your own mother, at least in the first year or two. A handloom linen with a zari border, such as The Go to in ivory or Main Event in burgundy red, is respectful and very wearable. Ask your partner what she wears most.
Wife
Red, pink, wine
Red or wine for an anniversary or Karwa Chauth, a hand painted chiffon such as Damask Rose in pink for a dinner, or Vintage Wine, a wine floral chiffon with hand embroidery.
Sister
Pink, peach, baby pink
Pure chiffon florals and gingham prints suit Rakhi, birthdays and her friends’ weddings: Roselle in pink, Camilie in peach or Rosy Skies in a baby pink gingham print.
Friend or colleague
Dusty pink, cobalt, lavender
Keep it useful and easy to wear to work: a plain mul cotton such as Cobalt Crumble in blue or Lilac Blush in lilac, or a block printed mul modal such as Vintage Speckle with dusty pink polka dots.
Teacher
Lavender, baby pink, teal
A plain cotton in a soft colour is the safest choice. Many schools discourage or cap gifts, so check the school’s policy first, and consider a class gift from several families. Our saree for teachers guide has more on what teachers wear.

A Saree for Your Mother

True Garnet plain maroon red mul modal saree by MAYIN

A saree for your mother is usually one of two very different things: a cotton saree she will wear every week, or a saree for a wedding or big function.

An everyday cotton saree for your mother

If your mother wears sarees at home, to work or to the market, a good cotton saree will be one of her most used gifts. Mul cotton is very light, soft and breathable, and plain mul cotton can be hand washed gently in cold water at home. Forest Fantasy, a plain teal blue mul cotton at ₹1,699, and Olive Oasis in olive green are deep, practical colours for a busy day. Mul modal, a cotton and modal blend, drapes a little more fluidly and comes with a 1 m running blouse piece: True Garnet in maroon red and Mauve Melody in pink are ₹1,899 each.

If she likes a little shine even on ordinary days, a zari striped mul cotton such as Saaz in green or Manjari in red, both ₹2,299, sits between everyday and festive. Zari sarees need dry cleaning. Kamakshi, white with a red border and gold zari at ₹1,799, is a lovely pick for a mother who wears white and red for puja.

A saree for your mother for a wedding

At a son’s or daughter’s wedding, many families want the mother to look festive without competing with the bride. Cotton tissue, handloom linen with zari and Dhakai jamdani all give her that dignity without the weight of a heavy bridal saree. Miss Earth is a yellow handloom cotton tissue with embroidery and zari at ₹3,499, lovely for a haldi or a day function. Main Event in burgundy red and Composure in pink are handloom linen with zari borders at ₹4,299, and Naples, a yellow floral Dhakai jamdani at ₹4,999, is a keepsake piece.

Occasions Through the Year

A saree suits almost any gifting occasion, but each one changes the timing and the kind of saree. Karwa Chauth, Diwali and Raksha Bandhan follow the lunar calendar and move every year; their dates below are as given in most calendars, so confirm with your local panchang.

The next twelve months of gifting
Thu 29 Oct 2026Karwa ChauthRed, maroon or pink for your wife; order by mid October
Sun 8 Nov 2026DiwaliFestive pieces for family; Bhai Dooj follows on Wed 11 Nov
Mon 8 Mar 2027Women’s DaySame date every year; an easy excuse for a gift
Sun 9 May 2027Mother’s DayAlways the second Sunday of May
Tue 17 Aug 2027Raksha BandhanIn most calendars; order by early August
Sun 5 Sep 2027Teachers’ DaySame date every year in India

Raksha Bandhan: a saree from a brother

Rakhi is one of the most common reasons a brother gives his sister a saree, and light, cheerful ones suit a day at home with family. If your sister wears sarees mostly to weddings and parties, Rosy Skies or Roselle will go straight into that rotation. If she lives in cotton, Vintage Speckle is a soft pink polka dot mul modal at ₹2,499 with a 1 m running blouse piece. If your sister lives abroad, Rakhi can fall a day earlier in some time zones, so check a panchang set to her city.

Anniversaries and Karwa Chauth

For your wife, choose something she would not quite buy for herself. Red, maroon and wine are traditional for Karwa Chauth in many families. Manjari, red mul cotton with zari stripes, is comfortable for a day of fasting; Main Event in burgundy red linen with a zari border is a dressier gift. For an anniversary dinner, a hand painted chiffon such as Damask Rose feels special without being formal. Our guide to a saree for a birthday party or anniversary has looks for milestone years too.

Mother’s Day, Diwali and housewarmings

Mother’s Day falls on a Sunday, so aim for delivery on the Thursday or Friday before. For Diwali, see our Diwali saree gift guide. For a housewarming, if you know the family well, an everyday cotton saree for the woman of the house is a useful gift for the busy weeks of settling in.

Sarees as Wedding Gifts

In many Indian families, sarees are part of the gifts exchanged around a wedding, though who gives what varies widely by community and by family.

Wedding gifting customs, in brief
CustomWhere you may see itWhat happens
Shagun and len-denMany North Indian familiesThe bride’s family often sends clothes, including sarees, to the groom’s close relatives. Cash gifts often end in one, such as ₹101 or ₹501.
MilniMany Punjabi and North Indian weddingsRelatives from both sides meet when the groom’s party arrives, and the bride’s family often gives gifts to his relatives.
MameruMany Gujarati familiesThe bride’s maternal uncle’s family brings gifts for her, traditionally including a saree.
TattvaMany Bengali familiesDecorated trays of gifts travel between the two homes around the Gaye Holud, and often include sarees.

Customs differ even within one community, so ask an elder before planning family gifts. As a guest, a saree is optional, but if you are close to the bride it is a lovely personal gift.

If you are a guest
Good wedding gifts for the bride
✓A saree she can wear in the months after the wedding: to work, to visit family, to her first festivals
✓Light, everyday fabrics: mul modal, linen, mul cotton in colours she likes
✓A festive piece for her first Diwali or Karwa Chauth
Gifts that tend to sit unworn
✕Another heavy bridal saree; she will have several
✕A colour she has said she dislikes
✕A saree that needs a lot of tailoring before she can wear it

Our guide to daily wear sarees for a new bride covers what she will need in her first months.

A saree for your sister for a wedding

When a brother marries, in many families his sisters receive new sarees for the wedding functions. Ask her which function it is for. Pure chiffon florals such as Camilie in peach suit a day function; Vintage Wine with hand embroidery suits an evening; Composure, pink linen with a zari border, suits a puja or the wedding morning. If you are the sister choosing what to wear yourself, our wedding guest saree looks and bridesmaid saree guide go function by function.

When You Do Not Know Her Taste

Five ways to narrow it down
Look at photos from the last few family events. Note the colours she repeats and whether she wears prints or plain sarees.
Ask someone close to her: a sister, a daughter, a friend. One question, “what colours does she wear most?”, is enough.
Notice her jewellery. Mostly gold suits warm colours and zari; mostly silver or pearls suits cool colours and pastels.
If she wears a lot of one colour, choose a neighbouring shade rather than the same one. A woman who wears maroon will likely enjoy wine or burgundy.
Choose a solid colour or a solid with a border over a bold print. Prints are personal; plain colours are easy to style.

If you still have nothing to go on, some colours are easier to get right than others. They suit most skin tones and pair with blouses she probably owns.

Colours that are hard to get wrong
Maroon
TrySkip
Gold, mustard, ivory. Skip neon green. Festive and grown up; True Garnet is a maroon red mul modal.
Teal
TrySkip
Gold, ivory, rust. Skip black. Rich but calm; Forest Fantasy and Rosalie are both teal blue.
Navy
TrySkip
White, silver, pink. Skip chocolate brown. Smart for work and evenings; see Florina, a navy floral pure chiffon.
Mustard
TrySkip
Maroon, bottle green, white. Skip lemon. Warm and festive; Golden Hour is mustard linen with zari.
Soft pink
TrySkip
Gold, ivory, maroon. Skip neon green. Gentle at any age; Mauve Melody and Composure.
Ivory with gold
TrySkip
Red, maroon, gold. Skip beige. Classic for a puja or wedding; The Go to is ivory linen with zari.

Is a white or black saree a bad gift? There is no single rule across India. White with a gold border is festive in Kerala and white with red is festive in Bengal, but some North Indian families associate plain white with mourning, and some families avoid black at weddings while others wear it on purpose, for example on Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra. If you do not know the family’s view, choose another colour; if you do, our white sarees include bordered pieces. Our guide to saree colours for your skin tone helps if you know her colouring but not her wardrobe.

How Much to Spend

There is no right amount for a saree gift. A thoughtful ₹1,699 cotton in the right colour will be worn more often than an expensive saree in the wrong one. As a rough guide to what you get at each price with us:

What each budget buys
₹1,699 to ₹1,999
Plain mul cotton and plain mul modalColleagues, teachers, friends, and mothers who wear sarees daily. Many colours, with plain mul modal including a 1 m running blouse piece. See our sarees under 2000.
₹2,099 to ₹2,999
Zari stripes, gingham, polka dots, hand painted and embroidered mulSisters, close friends, mothers who like a little shine: Saaz, Manjari, Vintage Speckle.
₹3,399 to ₹4,499
Pure chiffon, hand painted and hand embroidered chiffon, cotton tissue, embroidered mulSisters, wives, a friend’s wedding: Roselle, Damask Rose, Miss Earth, Mauve Kiss. Handloom linen with zari sits at ₹4,299.
₹4,999 and above
Dhakai jamdani and our most detailed chiffonMothers, mothers-in-law, a bride: Naples at ₹4,999, or Florise, a hand embroidered chiffon at ₹5,599.

If you are giving several sarees, for example to every woman in the family at Diwali or a wedding, it is kinder to choose the same fabric in different colours than to spend very different amounts on each. For more under two thousand rupees, read the best sarees under 2000.

Size, Blouse and Finishing

A saree itself has no size. Every MAYIN saree is 5.5 m long and 45 inches wide, which drapes comfortably on most women. The only fit question is the blouse, and that is where a gift can stall in a drawer.

What comes in the box
SareeComes withBlouse that suits
Mul cottonNo blouse pieceA contrast blouse from her wardrobe; tell her a colour in the note
Mul modal1 m running blouse pieceStitched to her own pattern by her tailor
Pure chiffon and chiffon1 m crepe blouse pieceStitched with soft cups or none, as moulded cups can show under chiffon
Handloom linen1 m blouse pieceA simple cut: boat neck or round neck, elbow sleeves
Cotton tissueBlouse piece (most tissue sarees)Gold, or the base colour of the saree
Dhakai jamdaniCheck the product page for the blouse pieceA plain blouse that picks a colour from the motifs

A 1 m blouse piece covers most short and elbow sleeve designs; full sleeves often need more unless you are a smaller size, so show your tailor the piece first. Tailors get busy before festivals and wedding season, so give a saree with a blouse piece early enough for her to have it stitched.

Fall and pico

A fall is a strip of cotton fabric stitched along the inside of the lower border to give the hem weight and protect it from wear. Pico is a narrow machine finish along the raw edges so they do not fray. Our sarees ship without fall or pico. Some women like both, others prefer a light saree without, so leave it to her; her tailor can add them when stitching the blouse. For blouse ideas she can take to her tailor, see our blouse design ideas by colour.

Wrapping, the Note and Exchanges

MAYIN offers gift wrap, so ask for it when you order. If you are wrapping it yourself, take the saree out of its courier packaging, fold it so the pallu or the border sits on top, and lay it flat in a box or a cloth bag.

Then add a handwritten note. A few lines are enough:

Note ideas
For your mother“For all the sarees you wore to my school events. This one is just for you.”
For your mother-in-law“I chose the colour after seeing you in maroon at Diwali. I hope it becomes a favourite.”
For your wife“Wear it to dinner on Saturday. The table is booked.”
For your sister“For the next wedding you have to dance at. Happy Rakhi.”
For a teacher“Thank you for this year, from all of us in Class 4.”
For a friend“Saw it and thought of you. Pink, obviously.”

Exchanges, and when to order

MAYIN accepts returns and exchanges within 7 days. That window starts when the parcel is delivered, not when she opens it, which changes when you should order.

Two ways to time it
If she needs a blouse stitched
✓Order two to three weeks ahead and give it to her as soon as it arrives
✓She has time to see the colour, exchange it if needed, and get the blouse made
✓Best for weddings and big festivals
If it is a surprise on the day
✓Time the delivery for the last few days before the occasion
✓She still has days left to exchange it if the colour is not right
✓Best for birthdays, Mother’s Day and anniversaries

Keep the order number handy and ask her to keep the saree unworn with its tags on until she is sure. You can mention the exchange without showing the price: “If the colour is not quite you, it can be swapped within a week of delivery; just tell me.” Delivery within India is free and usually takes 2 to 3 days in metros and up to 7 days in the North East and J&K. Cash on delivery is available, but for a gift, pay online so she has nothing to pay at the door.

Gifting From or to Another Country

Many saree gifts cross borders, and MAYIN ships within India and internationally.

Four things to know
Sending to India from abroadOrder on the website as you would at home and have it delivered to her Indian address. Shipping within India is free.
Sending abroad from IndiaWe ship internationally. Duties and taxes may be charged at her end depending on the country, and rules change often, so check her country’s current rules before you order.
Returns abroadCheck the returns policy for international orders before you order, and choose a colour you are sure of.
Choose the easy piecesFor someone abroad, pick a solid colour or a solid with a border, and a fabric with a blouse piece, such as mul modal or chiffon, as blouse fabric can be hard to find outside India.

Questions People Ask

Is a saree a good gift?

Yes, if you choose it for the way she lives. A saree in a fabric she wears often and a colour she already likes will be worn for years; a heavy saree for someone who rarely wears one may stay in the cupboard.

Which saree is best for gifting?

For a daily saree wearer, mul cotton or mul modal; for festivals and weddings, handloom linen with zari, cotton tissue or jamdani; for someone who rarely wears sarees, pure chiffon or mul modal. Choose fabric first, then colour.

What colour saree should I gift if I do not know her taste?

Maroon, teal, navy, mustard, soft pink or ivory with gold. They suit most skin tones and pair with blouses she probably owns.

Is a cotton saree a good gift for my mother?

Very good, if she wears sarees often. Mul cotton and mul modal are light and comfortable, and plain ones can be hand washed gently in cold water at home.

Which saree should I gift my mother-in-law?

Something a little more formal than an everyday cotton, such as handloom linen with a zari border or a cotton tissue, in a colour your partner says she wears most.

What saree should a brother gift his sister on Raksha Bandhan?

A light, cheerful one: a floral or gingham pure chiffon, or a printed mul modal. Rakhi 2027 is on Tuesday 17 August in most calendars.

Is it okay to gift a saree at a wedding?

Yes. In many families sarees are exchanged between the two sides, and close friends often give the bride one. As a guest, choose one she can wear after the wedding rather than another bridal saree.

Is it bad luck to gift a black or white saree?

There is no universal rule. Some families avoid black or plain white at happy occasions, while white with a gold or red border is festive in Kerala and Bengal. If unsure, choose another colour.

Do I need her size to gift a saree?

No. Every MAYIN saree is 5.5 m long and 45 inches wide. Only the blouse needs fitting, so check whether the saree comes with a blouse piece.

Can she exchange a saree I gifted?

Yes, within 7 days of delivery, so time the delivery so she has a few days after opening it. Keep the order number handy and the tags on.

Can I send a MAYIN saree as a gift abroad?

Yes, we ship internationally. Duties or taxes may apply at her end depending on the country, so check her country’s current rules first.
