What Is a Dhakai Jamdani Saree? History, Weave and Care

Lilac Bloom lavender floral original Dhakai jamdani saree by MAYIN

A Dhakai jamdani saree is a fine muslin cotton saree in which the motifs are woven into the fabric by hand, one by one, using a supplementary weft technique that goes back centuries in the Dhaka region of Bengal. The flowers, vines and geometric figures look as if they float on the sheer cotton, because they are part of the weave rather than printed or embroidered on it. One saree can take weeks on the loom, which is why a genuine jamdani costs more than other cotton sarees and why it is treated as an heirloom. This guide covers the history, how jamdani is woven, Dhakai versus other jamdanis, how to spot a handwoven jamdani, how it drapes, what to wear with it, occasions, care, prices and the questions people ask.

A Short History

Jamdani grew out of the muslin weaving tradition of Bengal, centred on Dhaka and the villages along the Shitalakshya river, where the humid air and fine local cotton allowed weavers to spin thread of extraordinary fineness. Under the Mughal court jamdani became a luxury export, with floral and geometric designs woven to order. The industry declined under colonial rule, when mill cloth undercut hand weaving, and revived in the twentieth century through weaver cooperatives on both sides of Bengal. In 2013 UNESCO inscribed the traditional art of jamdani weaving on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and in 2016 Bangladesh registered jamdani as its first geographical indication. Weavers in West Bengal continue the tradition too, in centres such as Shantipur, Phulia and Dhaniakhali.

How Jamdani Is Woven

Jamdani is woven on a traditional pit or frame loom by two weavers sitting side by side. The base fabric is a fine, slightly sheer cotton. As the plain weft is passed across, the weavers add a second, thicker thread for the motif, working it into only the few warp threads where the design falls, using a small bamboo needle or fingertip. Each motif is built up pass by pass, row by row, from memory or a pattern drawn on paper beneath the warp. Because the design thread is cut and tucked at the edge of each motif, the figures sit discontinuously on the cloth, as if embroidered, yet they are entirely woven.

Six steps on the jamdani loom
1
Set a fine cotton warpHundreds of fine threads are starched and set on the loom.
2
Weave the groundA plain cotton weft builds the sheer base.
3
Add the motif threadA thicker supplementary weft is worked into the warp only where the motif falls.
4
Repeat for every rowEach motif rises one weft row at a time; a dense pallu can take days.
5
Cut and tuckThe motif thread is finished at each edge so the back stays neat.
6
Finish and washThe saree is taken off the loom, washed and pressed.

How to Spot a Handwoven Jamdani

Real or imitation
Handwoven jamdani
✓Motifs sit on a sheer ground and look as if they float
✓The back is neat; motif threads are tucked, not carried across
✓Small variations between motifs, because each is made by hand
✓Soft, fine cotton that gets softer with wash
✓Weeks of work, so the price reflects it
Power loom copy
•Motifs are flat and identical
•Long threads float across the back between motifs
•Perfectly even, machine regular
•Often polyester or a blend, slightly shiny
•Priced like a printed saree
Good to know
The back of the fabric is the quickest test. Turn the pallu over: a handwoven jamdani is almost as tidy on the reverse as on the front, with no long loose threads running between the figures.

How Jamdani Drapes

Jamdani is light and semi-sheer, so it drapes softly and moves with air. Wear a petticoat in a colour close to the saree, or a shade lighter, so the motifs stay the focus and the sheerness reads as elegance rather than transparency. Make slightly narrower pleats than you would with linen, and let the pallu fall open to show the woven figures. Because the cotton is fine, a cotton petticoat and three pins hold everything in place. The steps are in our guide to how to drape a mul cotton saree.

What to Wear With a Jamdani

Styling jamdani
Blouse
Jamdani sarees do not come with a blouse piece. Choose a plain cotton blouse in white, ivory or the saree’s base colour so the woven motifs stay the focus. A colour from the motif is the bolder choice.
Jewellery
Oxidised silver or pearls for day; light gold for pujas and weddings. Jamdani is delicate, so keep jewellery delicate too.
Footwear
Kolhapuris, juttis or low heels. Nothing heavy.
Hair
A low bun with a flower, or a loose plait. Jamdani suits an understated, classic finish.

Blouse colour ideas by saree colour are in our blouse colour guide; Lilac Bloom pairs as a purple saree, Naples as a yellow saree and Bloom as a black saree.

Questions People Ask

What is a Dhakai jamdani saree?

A fine muslin cotton saree from the Dhaka weaving tradition of Bengal, with motifs woven into the fabric by hand using a supplementary weft. The figures look as if they float on the sheer cotton.

Is jamdani woven or embroidered?

Woven. The motif thread is added on the loom while the base cloth is being woven, which is why it looks like embroidery but is part of the fabric.

How do I identify an original jamdani?

Turn it over. A handwoven jamdani has a neat back with motif threads tucked at each edge; power loom copies have long threads floating across the back.

How long does it take to weave a jamdani?

Days for a simple one, weeks or months for a fine Dhakai piece. MAYIN jamdanis take more than 90 working hours.

Why is jamdani expensive?

Every motif is woven by hand, row by row, so a single saree is weeks of skilled work on fine cotton.

Is jamdani a cotton saree?

Traditional Dhakai jamdani is pure cotton, and MAYIN jamdanis are 100% handwoven muslin cotton.

Can I wash a jamdani at home?

Yes, with care: gentle cold hand wash, no wringing, shade dry, iron on the reverse. Dry cleaning is also fine.

Does a jamdani saree come with a blouse piece?

MAYIN jamdani sarees do not. Pair them with a plain cotton blouse in white, ivory or the base colour.

Is jamdani see-through?

It is semi-sheer. Wear a petticoat close to the saree colour and the sheerness reads as elegance.

Where does jamdani come from?

The Dhaka region of Bengal, now in Bangladesh, with living traditions in West Bengal towns such as Shantipur, Phulia and Dhaniakhali.
