Bengali Saree Look: The Red and White Saree, Drape, Blouse and Jewellery
By Nishita Nathani20 min read
A Bengali saree look starts with a white or off-white saree with a red border, known as laal paar sada, worn with a red blouse, a large red bindi and gold jewellery. Traditionally the saree is draped in the aatpoure style, with a few broad folds in front instead of knife pleats and the pallu over the left shoulder, but a neat everyday drape with the border showing at the hem reads as Bengali too. This guide covers the red and white saree itself, the weaves of Bengal, how to get the look with a saree you can buy and wash easily, an honest guide to the aatpoure drape on a 5.5 m saree, blouses, jewellery and customs, staying comfortable while pandal hopping, the occasions beyond Durga Puja and the questions people ask.
What Makes a Saree Look Bengali
The Bengali look is a set of parts more than a single garment, and you can turn each one up or down. A white saree with a red border, a red blouse and a big red bindi reads as Bengali from across a pandal. Add gold, flowers and the aatpoure drape when you want the full traditional version.
You do not need all eight. For an office pujo, the saree, a red blouse and a bindi are plenty; for Ashtami morning, add gold, alta and flowers.
The Red and White Saree: Laal Paar Sada
The red and white saree, called laal paar sada (literally “red border, white”, also spelt lal par sada), is the saree most people picture when they think of Bengal. The body is white, off-white or cream; the border is red, sometimes with a line of gold zari or small woven motifs. Traditionally it was a cotton tant for daytime pujas and a silk garad or korial for bigger occasions.

Why red and white? It is often said that red stands for Shakti, the goddess and marriage, and white for purity and simplicity. These are folk explanations rather than settled history, and families tell them differently. What is not in doubt is the saree’s place at Durga Puja, especially on Ashtami morning for anjali, the flower offering, and on Dashami for Sindoor Khela, when married women in many families smear sindoor on one another before the goddess is taken for immersion.
Who can wear it? Everyone. Girls, unmarried women, older women and guests all wear red and white at pujo. The customs that some families keep for married women are sindoor and the shankha and pola bangles, not the saree itself.
A bright, slightly orange red such as sindoor red feels festive and young. A deeper red or maroon border feels more formal and suits evening. MAYIN’s two red and white pujo sarees are both light mul cotton: Devi, white mul cotton with gold and red detailing at ₹1,999, and Kamakshi, white with a red border and a gold zari edge at ₹1,799. Neither comes with a blouse piece. Devi takes a gentle cold hand wash; Kamakshi should be dry cleaned because of its zari. See all Durga Puja sarees.
The Sarees of Bengal, Weave by Weave
Bengal, on both sides of today’s border, has a rich saree tradition. Knowing the names helps you read a saree, even if yours is not one of them.
The difference between tant and jamdani comes up often. Tant is plain-woven cotton with a crisp hand and woven borders. Jamdani is finer and more time-consuming: each motif is worked into the sheer ground by hand as an extra thread, so the flowers sit inside the cloth rather than on it. Read more in what is a Dhakai jamdani saree and our map of the types of sarees in India.
Getting the Look Without a Bengal Weave
The Bengali look depends on where the colour sits: plenty of white, a strong line of red and gold at the edges. That means a light mul cotton or linen can carry it as well as a traditional weave, and is far easier to wear for a long, warm day.
The Aatpoure Drape, Explained
Aatpoure (also spelt atpoure) is the traditional Bengali drape; the name is often said to mean “eightfold”. Ask three Bengali women how to drape it and you may get three answers, because families do it differently. What the versions share is simple.
For the full step-by-step, see our Durga Puja saree guide. If you prefer a pleated drape, make five to seven pleats and tuck the pleats in at the navel, facing left, keeping the red border visible at the hem.
A note on history. The everyday drape many Bengali women wear today, as distinct from aatpoure, is often credited to Jnanadanandini Devi (1850 to 1941), who adapted a Parsi-influenced drape with the pallu over the left shoulder while living in Bombay. It spread among Brahmo women in Calcutta as the “Brahmika sari”, helped by advertisements in the women’s magazine Bamabodhini Patrika. As for the keys, they are often said to show the woman who holds the keys of the household; that is folk interpretation, and practically, the weight helps the pallu sit.
Will a 5.5 m Saree Work for Aatpoure?
Yes, with a few adjustments. MAYIN sarees are 5.5 m long and 45 inches wide. The version that goes round to the right shoulder uses more length than an everyday drape because the pallu travels further, so on 5.5 m you save fabric in front: fewer, shallower folds and a single wrap. The left-shoulder version fits comfortably.
Handloom linen such as Main Event and The Go to holds broad folds crisply, and handloom cotton tissue such as Miss Earth, a yellow tissue with embroidery and zari, has a crisp hand that recalls a starched pujo saree. Mul cotton is softer but the easiest to wear for hours. If you love chiffon, keep it for an evening pleated drape: Vintage Wine, a wine red chiffon with a floral print and hand embroidery, gives you red without the folds. Blouse for a Red and White Saree
The rule is simple: the blouse picks up the colour that is in short supply. On a white saree with a red border, wear red. On a red saree, wear white, off-white or gold. Classic Bengali blouses have elbow or three-quarter sleeves with a round or boat neck; short sleeves are fine in the heat. Match the red of the blouse to the red of the border, orange red with orange red and blue red with blue red, because two reds that disagree look like a mistake.
MAYIN does not sell stitched blouses. A 1 m blouse piece covers most short and elbow sleeve designs; full sleeves often need more unless you are a smaller size, so show your tailor the piece first. Jewellery, Bindi, Alta and Hair
Gold is the usual choice with a red and white saree: jhumkas, a long sitahar necklace, a close-fitting chik, and gold bangles. Can you wear silver? Yes. Gold is traditional, but silver or oxidised jewellery looks fresh with white cotton for a day look; it is a matter of taste, not a rule.
Keep make-up light for a humid day: kohl, a red lip and the bindi do most of the work. More in our guide to jewellery for a saree.
Pujo Practicalities: Heat, Crowds and Etiquette
Durga Puja falls in autumn, when Bengal is often still warm and humid. Pandal hopping means hours on foot, crowds, queues and evening smoke from lamps and dhunuchi, the clay incense burners. A heavy saree is lovely in photos and hard work by midnight, so light cotton makes sense for pandal hopping, with a heavier saree saved for a short ceremony.
Visiting a friend’s pujo as a guest? Red and white is warmly welcomed whether or not you are Bengali.
Occasions Beyond Durga Puja
The red and white saree belongs to Durga Puja, but the Bengali calendar has other dressing moments through the year. Dates follow the Bengali panjika and shift each year, so check your local calendar.
For Saraswati Puja, Naples is a yellow floral Dhakai jamdani at ₹4,999; for a lighter day, Lemonade in plain yellow mul cotton at ₹1,699 and Amber in yellow mul modal at ₹1,899 both pair well with a red blouse. For Poila Baisakh, a pink or pastel saree such as Mauve Kiss, pink mul cotton with embroidery and zari, feels fresh for a morning visit. At a Bengali wedding the bride usually wears red, and evening guests often choose jewel tones. Questions People Ask
What is the Bengali red and white saree called?
Laal paar sada, also spelt lal par sada, meaning “red border, white”. Traditional versions are cotton tant for daytime and silk garad or korial for bigger occasions.
Why do Bengali women wear red and white during Durga Puja?
It is often said that red stands for the goddess, Shakti and marriage, and white for purity. Whatever the meaning, it has become the saree of Ashtami anjali and Sindoor Khela.
How do you drape a saree in Bengali style?
Wrap the saree once, make two or three broad folds in front instead of pleats, and take the pallu over the left shoulder, optionally round to the right shoulder, with keys or a brooch at the corner. Our Durga Puja saree guide has the full steps.
Why does a Bengali saree have keys on the pallu?
The keys are often said to mark the woman who runs the household. That is folk interpretation; practically, they weight the pallu so it stays in place.
Which fabric is best for a Bengali drape?
A crisp fabric that holds folds: handloom cotton, linen or tissue. Mul cotton is softer but easiest to wear for a long day. Avoid chiffon for a first try because it slips.
Can I drape aatpoure with a 5.5 m saree?
Yes. The left-shoulder version fits easily; for the version that goes round to the right shoulder, keep the front folds few and shallow and wrap only once.
Can unmarried girls wear a red and white saree?
Yes. Girls, unmarried women, older women and guests all wear red and white at pujo. Sindoor and shankha and pola are customs some families keep for married women, not the saree.
What blouse goes with a red and white saree?
A red blouse with elbow or three-quarter sleeves is the classic, matched to the red of the border. With a red saree, wear white, off-white or gold.
Can you wear silver jewellery with a laal paar saree?
Yes. Gold is the usual choice, but silver or oxidised jewellery works well with white cotton for a day look.
What is shakha pola?
In many Bengali Hindu families, married women wear a white conch shell bangle (shankha) and a red bangle (pola), often with an iron one (noa). They are traditionally given at the wedding, and practice varies.
What is the difference between tant and jamdani?
Tant is crisp, plain-woven Bengal cotton with woven borders. Jamdani is finer and sheerer, with each motif woven in by hand as the saree is made.
What do Bengalis wear on Poila Baisakh?
New clothes, often white, pastels or red and white in cotton. Light cotton and jamdani suit the mid-April heat.
