Durga Puja Saree Guide 2026: What to Wear Each Day of Pujo
By Nishita Nathani9 min read
For Durga Puja, the classic saree is the laal paar sada: a white or off-white saree with a red border, worn especially for Ashtami anjali and Sindoor Khela on Dashami. Beyond that, Bengalis dress in festive reds, maroons, pinks, yellows and greens, often in cotton for long days of pandal hopping in humid October weather, and in jamdani or tissue for the evenings. In 2026, Mahalaya falls on Saturday 10 October, Maha Ashtami on Monday 19 October and Bijoya Dashami in Bengal on Wednesday 21 October. This guide covers the dates, what to wear on each day, the meaning of red and white, fabrics for the heat, the Bengali drape step by step, Sindoor Khela, jewellery and the questions people ask.

What to Wear Each Day
There is no fixed colour for each day of Durga Puja in Bengali tradition; the day-wise colours some sites publish belong to Navratri. If you want those, see our pooja saree guide, which lists the Navratri 2026 colours.
The Red and White Saree

Laal paar means red border. The white body stands for purity and the red for strength, auspiciousness and new beginnings, and the goddess herself is often draped in red and white. Married women traditionally wear it for Ashtami anjali and Sindoor Khela, but today women of every age wear the look through the festival. Devi is a white mul cotton saree with red and gold detailing made for exactly this. If you prefer a plain base, Vanilla Mousse in plain white mul cotton with a red blouse, or The Go To in ivory handloom linen with a gold zari border and a red blouse, give the same effect.

Fabrics for Pandal Hopping
Kolkata in October is still warm and humid, with days around 32 degrees and a real chance of rain. You will walk for hours, queue at pandals, and eat bhog standing up. Fabric choice matters more than at almost any other festival.
Mul cotton is the most comfortable for daytime pandal hopping and washes easily after sindoor. Dhakai jamdani such as Naples and Lilac Bloom is the most traditional choice for Ashtami. Cotton tissue such as Tarini and Devina glows under pandal lights at night. Read what is a Dhakai jamdani saree.
The Bengali Drape, Step by Step
Crisp cotton and jamdani hold this drape best. For the everyday nivi drape, see how to drape a mul cotton saree, and for twelve more drapes, our guide to saree draping styles.
Sindoor Khela
On Bijoya Dashami, after the farewell rituals, women offer sindoor, sweets and paan to the goddess and then smear sindoor on each other’s foreheads, cheeks and shakha pola, wishing each other a long and happy married life. It is joyful, crowded and red from head to toe. Traditionally it was for married women; many pujas now welcome everyone.

Care After the Festival
Rinse sindoor and alta stains from the back of the fabric in cold water as soon as you can, before they set, then hand wash cotton gently with a mild detergent and dry in the shade. Dry clean jamdani, tissue and linen with zari, and tell the dry cleaner about the stain. Full details in how to wash and store sarees.
Mistakes to Avoid
- A heavy saree for daytime pandal hopping in humid weather.
- Chiffon in the Bengali drape; it slides. Wear it nivi style for evenings.
- Delicate tissue or zari at Sindoor Khela.
- New heels for a night of walking.
- Leaving the pallu unpinned in a crowded pandal.

White stands for purity and red for strength, auspiciousness and new beginnings. The red and white laal paar saree is linked with the goddess and with married women’s rituals such as Sindoor Khela.
What should I wear for Ashtami anjali?
A traditional laal paar white and red saree or a Dhakai jamdani, with a red blouse, shakha pola, gold jhumkas and a big red bindi.
What should I wear for Sindoor Khela?
A washable white or ivory cotton saree with red, a pinned pallu, and nothing delicate. Sindoor stains, so avoid zari and tissue.

Traditionally it was for married women, but many pujas now welcome everyone. Follow your pandal’s custom.
Is there a colour for each day of Durga Puja?
Not in Bengali tradition. Day-wise colours belong to Navratri, which runs from 11 to 19 October in 2026.
