Saree for Young Women and Girls: Modern Looks for College and Beyond

Fairy Tale plain baby pink mul cotton saree by MAYIN for young women

The best saree for a college student or anyone wearing one for the first time is a light, soft cotton: a mul cotton or mul modal in a plain colour or a small print, worn with a fitted blouse or a crop top and shoes you can actually walk in. It pleats easily, stays cool through a long day, washes in a bucket at home or in a hostel, and a plain one can be restyled with a shirt, a belt or sneakers for many different days. This guide is for young women in college and in their twenties: choosing a first saree, colour blocking a plain one, fusion styling, one saree worn four ways, college occasions, draping it yourself, heat and washing, and budget.

Your First Saree: Start With the Right Fabric

A first saree should be forgiving. You want a fabric that pleats without a fight, stays where you pin it, and does not leave you sweating through a three hour lecture or a fest that runs late into the evening. Soft mul cotton does all three. It is light, the pleats lie flat instead of springing open, and it has just enough grip that the pallu does not keep sliding off your shoulder, which is the most common complaint with slippery synthetic fabrics.

Mul modal is the close cousin: smoother, a touch more fluid, with a soft sheen. Modal is a regenerated fibre made from wood pulp rather than a natural one, but it is breathable and very comfortable, and every MAYIN mul modal comes with a 1 metre running blouse piece. Mul cotton sarees come without a blouse piece, which suits a first saree well because you can wear a crop top or a blouse you already own. More on the difference in mul cotton vs mul modal.

Best fitAlso works Filled means best fit. Plain mul cotton and mul modal are a gentle cold hand wash; chiffon, linen and tissue are dry clean.

Pure chiffon is the farewell favourite. Our pure chiffon is 100% Bemberg: very light, it moves beautifully in photos and the pleats fall easily, but it is smoother than cotton, so use an extra pin or two. Handloom linen is crisp and cool, with a structure that looks sharp at an interview or internship presentation, though it takes a little more patience to pleat. Cotton tissue is stiffer, so keep it for later. For a side by side view of every fabric, see the best saree fabric guide.

Good to know
Borrowing your mother’s saree is a lovely way to start, and for many people it is how a first saree happens. Check two things before the day: the length, because older sarees vary, and the weight, because a heavy festive saree is a hard first drape. If you are buying your own, a plain or small print mul cotton is a sensible first choice, simply because you will wear it again and again.

Plain Sarees and Colour Blocking

Fairy Tale plain baby pink mul cotton saree by MAYIN for college

A plain saree is the most useful saree a young woman can own. It has no print to compete with, so the blouse, the jewellery and the shoes do all the talking, and you can change the whole mood by changing one piece. The simplest modern trick is colour blocking: a blouse in a clear contrast colour, worn with a plain saree, so the two read as deliberate blocks rather than a match. One strong contrast looks confident.

Plain saree, contrast blouse
Baby pink
TrySkip
Black, navy, mint. Skip peach. A black crop top makes baby pink modern instead of sweet. Peach sits too close and washes out.
Lemon yellow
TrySkip
Cobalt, white, rani pink. Skip beige. Cobalt with lemon is the brightest block on this list and photographs well outdoors.
Mint
TrySkip
Lavender, white, coral. Skip olive. Mint and lavender is the soft pastel pairing; coral is the bolder one.
Lilac
TrySkip
Mustard, white, black. Skip red. Mustard is lilac’s opposite on the colour wheel, which is why the pair looks so lively.
Cobalt blue
TrySkip
Lemon, white, coral. Skip navy. Navy is too close to cobalt; the blouse disappears.
Black
TrySkip
Red, white, rani pink. Skip charcoal. The most versatile plain saree there is. Charcoal looks like a near miss.
Coral
TrySkip
Teal, white, navy. Skip orange. Teal against coral is a warm and cool block that suits most skin tones.

All seven shades above are plain mul cotton at ₹1,699: Fairy Tale in baby pink, Lemonade in yellow, Mint Meadow, Lilac Blush, Cobalt Crumble, After Dark in black, and Coral Mist. If you prefer a softer fall and a blouse piece in the box, Mauve Melody in pink and True Garnet in deep red are plain mul modal at ₹1,899.

Print on plain is the other easy trick: a small floral or checked blouse with a plain saree, as long as the print carries the saree colour somewhere. The reverse works too: a polka dot saree such as The Nude Dot or Spot On with a plain black or white blouse. For blouse cuts that suit plain cotton, see blouse designs for plain cotton sarees.

Fusion Styling: Shirt, Belt, Sneakers, Crop Top

Young women now wear sarees to brunch, to class and to college fests, paired with whatever is already in the wardrobe. The fusion pieces below all work best on light cotton and mul modal, because soft fabric drapes neatly over a shirt or under a belt without bulk at the waist.

Five fusion pieces
Crop topA fitted top that ends at or just above your petticoat waistband. A plain ribbed black or white one goes with almost every saree, needs no tailor, and can be washed with your other clothes.
ShirtA slim or regular cotton shirt, tucked into the petticoat before you drape. Boxy or oversized shirts bunch under the pleats; knot an oversized one at the waist instead.
BeltDrape and pin first, then fasten the belt at your natural waist over the pleats and pallu. Cloth or woven belts suit cotton and linen; a slim belt suits chiffon; a wider belt suits a plain saree.
SneakersPut them on before you drape so the hem sits just above the shoe. Clean white sneakers are the easy choice; chunky ones work with a saree tied slightly shorter.
JacketA denim or cotton jacket over a plain saree for winter mornings, air conditioned classrooms and evening events. Leave the pallu inside or out, as you like.
Saree with a shirt in six steps
1
Pick the shirtA slim or regular fit cotton shirt in white, light blue or a stripe. Avoid very boxy cuts and very long shirt tails.
2
Tuck it inPut on the petticoat, then tuck the shirt hem into it and smooth it flat at the sides and back.
3
Shoes onWear the shoes you will be in, so the hem length is right.
4
Drape as usualTuck the saree in, wrap once, make five to seven pleats and tuck them at the front.
5
Pin the pallu under the collarTake the pallu over the left shoulder and pin it to the shirt just under the collar so it does not slide.
6
FinishRoll the sleeves to three quarters, leave the top button open, and add a slim belt if you want a sharper waist.

Stripes and checks are made for shirt styling. Tokyo and Saturday are multicolour striped mul cotton, Blush Orchard is pink gingham and Cloudless Sky is blue gingham, and all of them look natural with a crisp white shirt. A loud shirt goes with a quiet saree and a quiet shirt with a louder one; two busy prints together rarely work. Whether a shirt saree suits the office depends on where you work. A muted linen such as Composure in pink or The Go to in ivory with a plain shirt looks sharp for an internship, and our guide to a professional look in a saree goes further.

One Saree, Four Looks

After Dark plain black mul cotton saree by MAYIN styled four ways

The best value in a wardrobe is a plain saree you keep restyling. Here is After Dark, a plain black mul cotton saree at ₹1,699, worn four ways across a college year. Swap it for any plain colour from the chart above and the same logic holds.

Four occasions, one saree and four tops you may already own. What to Wear Through the College Year

Match the fabric to how much you will walk, sit and dance, and the colour to the light: pastels and brights by day, deeper colours and a little shine at night.

Draping It Yourself the First Time

You do not need someone else to drape you. You need a full length mirror, a handful of pins, your phone propped up to film the back, and twenty unhurried minutes. Most people find the classic Nivi drape quick after a few practice runs, so do your first one the evening before, not the morning of.

Before you start
A cotton petticoat in the saree’s base colour, tied firmly at the waist but not tight enough to dig in.
A fitted blouse or crop top, already on.
The shoes you will wear, already on, so the hem sits at the right height.
Six safety pins: two for the pleats, two for the pallu at the shoulder, two spare.
A full length mirror, and your phone to film the back.
The Nivi drape in six steps
1
Tuck the plain endStart just right of your navel. Tuck the top edge of the saree into the petticoat and wrap it once around your waist, keeping the hem just above your shoes.
2
Set the palluTake the loose end round behind you, up across your chest and over your left shoulder. Let it fall to the back of your knees and pin it to the blouse at the shoulder.
3
Make the pleatsGather the fabric left in front into five to seven even pleats about the width of your palm. Line up the bottom edges.
4
Pin and tuckPin the pleats together in the middle, then tuck the pleats in at the navel, facing left.
5
Check the back and the hemUse the video. Smooth the back, make sure the hem is level, and add a pin where the pallu meets the waist if it wanders.
6
Test itWalk, sit, climb a few stairs and lift your arms. Adjust now, not at the venue.

Two tricks make the day itself easier: pleat and pin the pallu the night before so it is ready to throw over your shoulder, and press the pleats lightly so they remember their folds (on chiffon, press dry on the lowest heat through a cloth and skip the steam). MAYIN sarees come without a fall or pico, which soft mul cotton does not need to hang well; if you like a weighted hem on chiffon, a local tailor can add one. For a step by step drape with photos, read how to drape a mul cotton saree. For other drapes such as the pant style or the front pallu, see saree draping styles. If you would rather skip pleating altogether, any regular saree can be pre-pleated, and light everyday ones can be stitched by a tailor, as our ready to wear saree guide explains.

Underneath, on the Stairs and on the Metro

Small things that make a big difference
PetticoatCotton. Match it to the saree where you can; if you have no match on a light saree, nude usually shows less than white. Tie it firmly enough to hold the tuck, and loose enough to slide two fingers in.
Saree shapewearA fitted, flared underskirt that gives a smoother line under chiffon. Some saree shapewear has a firm waistband you can tuck into and can replace the petticoat; others are worn under one, so check before you buy.
Cycling shortsA thin pair under the petticoat helps with stairs, wind, sitting cross legged and chafing in the heat.
StairsLift the pleats a few centimetres with one hand at the front, not the side, and climb normally.
Sitting on the floorPull the pleats forward before you sit, then spread them over your knees so they do not crush or pull loose.
Scooter, auto, metroTuck the end of the pallu in at the waist or pin it down. If you ride pillion, gather the pleats so nothing hangs near the wheel.
Phone and bagA cross body bag keeps both hands free and does not drag the pallu off your shoulder. A tote works if you carry it on the right.
RestroomLift the pleats as one bundle with the petticoat; the pins keep them together so you can let go and they fall back in place.

Heat, Sweat and Washing in a Hostel

Cotton absorbs moisture and lets air through, which is why a mul cotton saree feels cooler after six hours than a synthetic one that looks similar on the hanger. Mul modal is smooth and breathable too. Synthetic blends tend to trap heat and slip more, so you end up re-pinning all day.

What you feel by evening
Mul cotton or mul modalSynthetic blends
In the heatBreathes and absorbs sweatCan feel warm and clammy
PleatsSoft, lie flat, stay putSlippery, need more pins
WashingGentle cold hand washOften machine washable
Hand washing plain mul cotton and mul modal
1
Soak brieflyCold water and a little mild liquid detergent, for a few minutes only.
2
Swish, do not scrubMove the saree gently in the water. No brushing, no wringing.
3
Rinse until clearTwo or three changes of cold water. Wash dark colours on their own for the first few washes.
4
Roll in a towelLay the saree on a towel, roll them up together and press to take out the water.
5
Dry in the shadeInside out, over a line or two chairs, away from strong direct sun so the colour stays bright.
6
Iron while slightly dampMedium heat, on the reverse. A steam iron is ideal if your hostel allows one.

This routine is for plain and printed mul cotton and mul modal (not zari, sequin, embroidered or painted ones). Chiffon, linen and anything embroidered or with sequins should go to the dry cleaner. For the full care guide by fabric, see how to wash cotton, chiffon and linen sarees.

Budget and Cost per Wear

Judge price by how often you will wear it: a saree worn ten times is better value than a cheaper one worn once.

₹4,299
Handloom linen with a zari borderFor interviews, internships and your first job: Composure, The Go to.

Do the maths and it gets easier. A ₹1,699 saree worn to ten events over two years works out to about ₹170 a wear. A ₹3,399 chiffon worn to a farewell, two weddings and a Diwali party is about ₹850 a wear, and less every time after. Shipping is free within India, cash on delivery is available, and you can return or exchange within 7 days, which helps when you are not sure about a colour. Hair, Jewellery and Finishing Touches

Fashion coverage in 2026 calls the current mood desi-core: traditional pieces worn casually, such as a tiny bindi with a white shirt, or stacked glass bangles with sneakers. The principle underneath is old and reliable: pick one statement and keep everything else light.

One statement, everything else light
EarringsOxidised silver jhumkas with cotton, small gold hoops for class, statement earrings for the farewell. Usually the only jewellery you need.
BanglesA stack of glass bangles in one or two colours on one wrist, a watch on the other.
BindiA micro bindi reads modern; a larger round one reads festive. Both are fine with fusion looks.
HairA low bun or a claw clip keeps hair off the pallu; a braid with a clip is fest friendly; open waves suit the farewell.
BagA cross body bag by day, a small clutch or potli in the evening. Avoid a bag that matches the saree exactly.

Questions People Ask

Which saree is best for a college girl?

A light mul cotton or mul modal in a plain colour or a small print. It is cool through a long day, easy to pleat and washable at home, and a plain one can be restyled for many occasions.

What is the easiest saree for a beginner to drape?

Soft mul cotton. The pleats lie flat and stay put, and the fabric has enough grip that the pallu does not keep slipping. Save stiffer tissue and very smooth fabrics for later.

Can I wear a saree with sneakers to college?

Yes. Put the sneakers on before you drape so the hem sits just above them, and choose a light cotton saree that you can walk in all day.

Can I wear a crop top instead of a blouse?

Yes. A fitted crop top that ends at or just above the petticoat waistband works with most cotton and chiffon sarees, and a plain black or white one goes with almost everything.

How do I wear a saree with a shirt?

Tuck a slim or regular fit shirt into the petticoat, then drape as usual and pin the pallu just under the collar. Roll the sleeves to three quarters and add a slim belt if you like.

How can I make a plain saree look modern?

Use a contrast blouse or crop top for a clean colour block, add one statement piece such as earrings or a belt, and wear shoes you can walk in. Avoid matching every accessory to the saree.

What colour saree is best for a farewell?

Whatever you love and feel confident in. Pastel florals photograph softly in daylight, while black, deep red or navy with a bright blouse stand out at an evening farewell.

How do I stop the pallu slipping?

Pin it to the blouse at the shoulder, with a second pin where it crosses the waist if needed. Cotton holds better than very smooth fabrics, and pre-pleating the pallu the night before helps.

How much should I spend on my first saree?

Enough for a fabric you will wear often. A plain mul cotton at ₹1,699 is a good first saree, and a printed pure chiffon from ₹3,399 is a good second one for farewells and weddings.

Can I wear a saree without a petticoat?

You need something to tuck into. Some saree shapewear has a firm waistband you can tuck into and can replace the petticoat; others are worn under one, so check before you buy.
