Saree for Ganesh Chaturthi, Gauri Ganpati and Varalakshmi Vratham

Miss Earth yellow handloom cotton tissue saree with embroidery and zari by MAYIN

For Ganesh Chaturthi, wear a saree in one of the colours most associated with the festival, such as red, maroon, mustard, green or rani pink, in a fabric light enough for a midday puja in monsoon humidity. Breathable plain mul modal, or mul cotton with a zari border or stripes, keeps you comfortable on the floor and in the kitchen, while a jamdani, a cotton tissue or a handloom linen with zari brings more ceremony for the Gauri and Varalakshmi days. This guide covers the 2027 dates, colours, fabric, regional customs, Gauri Ganpati, Varalakshmi Vratham, a ten-day plan, practical draping, visarjan and office or society celebrations.

The 2027 Festival Calendar

The season opens in August with Varalakshmi Vratham and closes with Anant Chaturdashi in mid September. The dates below are the ones most Indian calendars give for 2027. Tithis are calculated for a place, and families follow their own traditions, so check your local or family panchang before you plan.

Varalakshmi to Anant Chaturdashi, 2027
Fri 13 AugVaralakshmi VrathamThe last Friday before Shravana Purnima
Fri 3 SepGowri HabbaKarnataka, the day before Ganesha
Sat 4 SepGanesh ChaturthiSthapana and the midday puja
About 6 to 8 SepJyeshtha GauriAvahan, puja and visarjan; check locally
Tue 14 SepAnant ChaturdashiTenth-day visarjan

Many homes keep Ganpati for 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 10 days, so your visarjan may come sooner. Shravana Purnima falls on Tuesday 17 August 2027, which is why most calendars put Varalakshmi Vratham on the Friday before it, 13 August.

Good to know
Living outside India? Use a panchang set to your own city. Calendars set to US cities such as Houston, for example, place Gowri Habba and Ganesh Chaturthi a day earlier, on 2 and 3 September 2027. The Gauri dates are the least settled of all, because they depend on the nakshatra; treat 6 to 8 September as a guide and confirm with your family.

Colours for Ganesh Chaturthi

Red and maroon are the colours most often linked with Ganesha, through the red flowers such as hibiscus offered to him, and they are the safest choice for the main puja. Yellow and mustard, leaf and bottle green, saffron, rani pink and purple are all widely worn too. These are associations, not rules; family custom comes first.

Is there a colour for each day?

No. Unlike Navratri, Ganeshotsav has no established day-wise colour calendar, and the lists that circulate online do not agree with one another. Choose by what the day holds instead: a festive colour for the puja, an easy one for cooking days and a deep one for visarjan. The day-wise idea belongs to the Navratri saree colours.

Black and white

There is no rule we know of that forbids black on Ganesh Chaturthi, but many families avoid it for puja and prefer brighter colours, so follow the custom of the home you are visiting. White with a red or gold border is a traditional puja saree in many communities. Kamakshi is white mul cotton with a red border and a gold zari edge, and Devi is white mul cotton with gold and red detailing; a red or green blouse makes either one festive. Blouse ideas: red saree blouses and green saree blouses.

Fabric for a Midday Puja in the Monsoon

The main Ganesh puja is held around midday, in the Madhyahna window that most calendars place between late morning and early afternoon. In much of India the monsoon is still on; in Mumbai it usually withdraws only in October. So the day means sitting on the floor near lamps, cooking and greeting guests in heat and humidity, which makes fabric the first choice and colour the second. A heavy handwoven saree looks wonderful in photos but is warm at midday and creases as you sit; a lighter saree with a festive finish does the same job at the puja and keeps you comfortable until the evening aarti.

Gowri Habba

In Karnataka, Gowri Habba falls on Friday 3 September 2027 in most calendars, with the puja held early in the morning. Many married women give and receive bagina, a set of gifts that traditionally includes turmeric, kumkum, bangles, beads, a blouse piece, a coconut, grains and jaggery. Mustard, green, red and maroon with a zari edge all suit the day: Golden Hour is mustard handloom linen with a zari border, and Miss Earth brings the sheen of tissue without the weight.

If you are adding a saree to the bagina for someone close, remember that a mul modal saree comes with a 1 m running blouse piece and our handloom linen with a 1 m blouse piece, so she has fabric for a blouse too. Mul cotton sarees come without one.

Saree for Gauri Ganpati

In many Maharashtrian homes, Jyeshtha Gauri arrives a few days after Ganesh Chaturthi, on the day set by the Anuradha nakshatra, and stays for three days: avahan, when she is welcomed into the home; the main puja, with a festive meal; and visarjan. In 2027 most calendars place these around Monday 6, Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 September, but the Gauri dates follow the nakshatra, so confirm with your local or family panchang.

In many homes the goddess is dressed in a saree like a new bride and offered the sixteen adornments of a married woman. Some homes bring two Gauris, the elder Jyeshtha and the younger Kanishtha; many coastal families worship one. Women lead much of the ritual, and many save their best saree for these days.

Do you need a nauvari or a Paithani?

The traditional choices are the nauvari, a nine-yard drape, and the Paithani, the handwoven saree from Paithan, often with a peacock motif on the pallu. Neither is necessary. A regular saree in the usual Nivi drape is common and accepted in most homes. MAYIN sarees are 5.5 m, too short for a true nauvari drape, so wear them the regular way and let colour and zari carry the occasion.

The Paithani palette is still a good guide: green with rani pink, purple with gold, yellow with green, and maroon. Pink Guava is green mul cotton with a pink border at ₹1,799 and echoes that green and pink. Abhira has pink and purple zari stripes at ₹2,199, and Mauve Kiss is pink mul cotton with embroidery and zari at ₹3,499, festive enough for the puja day.

Celebrating your first Gauri as a new bride? Many families expect a little more ceremony on the puja day: Miss Earth in yellow tissue with a green or maroon blouse, or Naples, the yellow floral Dhakai jamdani, look festive and stay light for a long day. For the weeks after, read daily wear sarees for a new bride.

Varalakshmi Vratham Sarees

Varalakshmi Vratham is kept by many married women in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and parts of Maharashtra on the last Friday on or before Shravana Purnima, which is 13 August 2027 in most calendars. A kalasham is decorated as the goddess Lakshmi, the puja runs through the morning, and in many homes visiting women are given tambulam afterwards.

The colours most families choose are green, red, mustard or gold, and maroon. Most prefer rich colours to pale ones for the day, but follow your mother’s or mother-in-law’s lead.

Can you wear cotton for Varalakshmi?

Yes. Heavy handwoven sarees are the tradition in many families, but nothing in the puja requires one, and August is humid. A cotton saree with a zari border, a jamdani or a light tissue looks festive at the puja and stays comfortable through the cooking and the tambulam visits.

The saree on the kalasham

In many homes the kalasham is dressed in a small saree or a folded blouse piece, and some families buy a new saree for the goddess as well as one for themselves. Ask your family which they do. A soft saree is easier to arrange around a kalasham than a stiff one, and a plain mul cotton can be hand washed in cold water afterwards, though turmeric and kumkum may leave a mark.

A Ten-Day Saree Plan

You do not need ten new sarees. Most of the ten days are home days of cooking, aarti and guests dropping in, and three or four sarees, restyled with different blouses and jewellery, cover the festival. Shorten this plan for one and a half, five or seven days.

For a simple Ganesh Chaturthi saree look on sthapana day, pair Manjari with a gold blouse, gold jhumkas and a red bindi. After that, two plain mul sarees for the daily aarti and one deep colour for visarjan cover the festival. Shipping is free across India on orders of ₹1,999 and above, cash on delivery is available, and ordering in July leaves time for a blouse to be stitched before Varalakshmi, and early August before Chaturthi.

Draping for the Floor, the Kitchen and the Aarti

Ganpati days mean sitting cross-legged, standing at the stove and holding a thali at the aarti. A few small changes to the usual drape help. For the full method, see how to drape a mul cotton saree and our saree draping styles.

Six small changes for a long puja day
1
Get the petticoat length rightThe saree should just brush your feet when you stand and not pull tight when you sit. Match the petticoat to the saree where you can; if you have no match on a light saree, nude usually shows less than white.
2
Make five to seven pleats and pin themTuck the pleats in at the navel, facing left, and pin them together at the top and once more lower down so they hold as you sit and stand.
3
Pre-pleat zari, tissue and jamdaniFold and pin the pleats of a zari, tissue, embroidered, jamdani or handloom linen saree the night before, with nothing sewn. A tailor can stitch the pleats of a light everyday mul cotton if you prefer.
4
Pin the pallu for the pujaPin the pallu at the shoulder so it stays put when you bend to offer flowers or touch the feet of elders.
5
Tuck the pallu for the kitchenBring the end of the pallu round and tuck it into the waist at the left hip while you make modak or puran poli. Keep any loose end well away from the stove and the diyas.
6
Sit, then spread the pleatsLift the pleats slightly as you sit cross-legged and spread them over your knees; they fall back into place when you stand.

Blouses that work through the festival

Short or elbow sleeves keep cuffs clear of the cooking, and cotton breathes in the humidity.

What to Wear for Visarjan

Visarjan may be a quiet immersion at home or a street procession with drums and gulal; if the second is likely, dress for it. Deep colours such as maroon, red, purple and bottle green hide gulal and wet hems far better than pastels or white, and with the monsoon still about, plan for rain.

Visarjan: what to wear and what to skip
Wear and carry
✓A deep-coloured saree you can wash: maroon, red, purple or bottle green
✓The pallu pinned at the shoulder and again at the waist
✓The hem a little higher than usual, clear of puddles
✓Flat, closed sandals with grip for wet, crowded streets
✓A small crossbody bag, with your phone in a zip bag if it rains
✓Spare safety pins, a hair tie and a small towel
Leave at home
✕Zari, tissue and sequins: gulal and water can dull metallic thread
✕White and pastels if you are joining a procession
✕A long, loose pallu that can catch in a crowd
✕Heels, or slippers that come off in mud
✕Heirloom jewellery

For a procession, True Garnet in maroon red mul modal or Twilight Bloom in plain purple mul cotton at ₹1,699 are ideal, because both hand wash at home. For an evening visarjan at home, Vintage Wine, a maroon floral print chiffon with hand embroidery at ₹3,499, or Rouge Waves, a pink leheriya print pure chiffon at ₹3,999, move beautifully; both are dry clean only, so keep them clear of gulal.

Getting gulal and mud out of cotton

For plain mul cotton and mul modal
Shake and brush off dry gulal before it touches water; wet powder spreads.
Let mud dry, then brush away as much as you can.
Rinse the stained area from the back under cold running water.
Wash gently by hand with a mild detergent, and dry deep colours inside out in the shade.
Skip hot water and bleach, both of which can set colour or fade the saree.
Send zari, embroidered, tissue, chiffon, jamdani and linen sarees to the dry cleaner, and tell them it is gulal.

Full instructions by fabric are in how to wash cotton, chiffon and linen sarees.

Office and Society Ganpati

Questions People Ask

Which colour saree should I wear on Ganesh Chaturthi?

Red or maroon is the most traditional choice for the puja, though no rule makes red compulsory. Yellow, mustard, green, saffron, rani pink and purple are all widely worn; follow your family’s custom first.

Can I wear black or white on Ganesh Chaturthi?

There is no rule we know of that forbids either. Many families avoid black for puja, so follow the custom of the home, and white with a red or gold border is a traditional puja saree in many communities.

Is a nauvari saree necessary for Ganpati?

No. The nauvari is traditional in many Maharashtrian homes, especially for Gauri, but a regular saree in the usual drape is common and accepted. A 5.5 m saree is too short for a true nauvari drape.

What should I wear for Gauri Ganpati?

Your most festive saree on the Gauri puja day, often green, rani pink, yellow or maroon with zari, and lighter sarees for avahan and visarjan. Green glass bangles and a flower gajra finish the look in many homes.

When is Ganesh Chaturthi 2027?

Saturday 4 September 2027 in most Indian calendars, with Anant Chaturdashi on Tuesday 14 September. Check your local panchang; calendars set to US cities such as Houston give 3 September.

When is Gauri Avahan 2027?

Around Monday 6 September, with the Gauri puja on 7 September and visarjan on 8 September in most calendars. Gauri dates follow the nakshatra, so confirm with your local or family panchang.

When is Varalakshmi Vratham 2027?

Friday 13 August 2027 in most calendars, the Friday before Shravana Purnima on 17 August. Check your local panchang.

What colour saree should I wear for Varalakshmi Vratham?

Green, red, mustard or gold, and maroon are the colours most families choose. Rich colours are preferred to pale ones in most homes, but follow your family’s lead.

Can I wear a cotton saree for Varalakshmi pooja?

Yes. A cotton saree with a zari border, a jamdani or a light tissue looks festive and keeps you comfortable through a humid August morning of puja and cooking.

What should I wear for Ganpati visarjan?

A deep-coloured saree you can wash, such as maroon, red, purple or bottle green, with the pallu pinned and flat sandals with grip. Keep zari, tissue and sequins away from the gulal.

How many sarees do I need for ten days of Ganpati?

Three or four is enough: a zari saree for sthapana, two plain mul sarees for the daily aarti and a deep colour for visarjan. Change the blouse and jewellery to change the look.
