Pastel Saree Guide: Shades, Skin Tones, Blouses and Occasions

Solenne lavender floral print pure chiffon pastel saree by MAYIN

A pastel saree is a saree in a soft, pale colour made by lightening a hue with white: baby pink, blush, lavender, powder blue, mint, peach, butter yellow and ivory are the classics. Pastels suit daytime functions, summer, the office and day weddings, and with the right undertone and blouse they suit every skin tone, deep skin included. This guide explains what actually makes a colour pastel, which shades flatter which skin, how mul cotton, chiffon, linen and jamdani change the way a pastel looks, what to wear for each occasion, blouse and jewellery pairings, and how to keep light colours from yellowing.

What Counts as Pastel

"Pastel" often gets stretched to cover everything from neon lime to beige, so it helps to be precise. In colour terms, a pastel is a colour with high lightness and low to medium saturation. Painters call it a tint: a pure hue with a lot of white added. The name comes from pastel sticks, the chalky drawing crayons whose colours looked softer than paints made from the same pigment.

That gives you a simple test. Picture the brightest version of the colour, then imagine mixing it with plenty of white. If the saree looks like the result, it is pastel. Hot pink becomes baby pink, purple becomes lavender, royal blue becomes powder blue, emerald becomes mint, orange becomes peach and yellow becomes butter.

Pastel Shades and How to Wear Them

Each pastel behaves a little differently. Some read as sweet, some as calm, some as quietly formal. Here are the shades MAYIN carries, with the sarees that wear them best.

Eight pastel families at MAYIN
Baby pink and blush
The sweetest pastel. Fairy Tale is plain baby pink mul cotton at ₹1,699; Blush Orchard adds a soft gingham check; Rosy Skies is the dressier pure chiffon version.
Dusty pink and mauve
Pink for people who think they do not like pink. Try Mauve Melody in mul modal, Dusty Petal gingham, or the floral Juliet.
Lavender and lilac
The most versatile pastel: office, brunch or a day wedding. Lilac Blush is plain mul cotton; Solenne and Amaris are floral prints.
Powder blue and aqua
Cool and calm, lovely in morning light. Slow Sunday is powder blue gingham chiffon; Cloudless Sky is aqua gingham mul cotton.
Mint and seafoam
Fresh and summery, and a natural fit for a mehendi. Mint Meadow, Spring Fern and the hand painted Anthuria.
Peach and apricot
Warm and flattering on warm undertones. Dusty Rose in mul modal, Apricity gingham and the floral Camilie.
Butter yellow
Soft enough for the office, cheerful enough for a haldi. Buttercream is handloom linen with a zari border.
Ivory and beige
Not true pastels, but they wear the same way. The Go To is ivory linen with zari; Frangipani is beige hand painted chiffon.

Pastels for Your Skin Tone

The common worry is that pastels wash you out, especially on deeper skin. They can, but only when the pastel is too grey or too close to your own skin. Two things decide which pastel suits you: your undertone, which is the warmth or coolness under the surface, and your depth, which is how light or deep your skin is. You need both.

Step one: find your undertone

Three quick checks, in daylight
1
Look at the veins on your wristBluish or purple veins suggest a cool undertone; greenish veins suggest warm; a mix, or hard to tell, suggests neutral.
2
Hold up white and ivoryIf bright white flatters you, you are probably cool. If ivory or cream looks better, you are probably warm.
3
Compare silver and goldCool undertones tend to glow in silver; warm undertones in gold. If both look good, you are neutral.
Undertone first
SareePastels that flatterMetal
Cool undertoneLavender, baby blue, icy pink, mint, lilacSilver, pearl
Warm undertonePeach, apricot, butter yellow, mint, coralGold, rose gold
Neutral undertoneDusty pink, lavender, powder blue, peach, sageRose gold, gold, silver
Warm undertones suit a warm mint with a touch of yellow in it; cool undertones suit a bluer mint.

Step two: adjust for depth

Then adjust for depth
Your skinWhat worksTip
FairDusty pink over baby pink, lavender, sage, powder blueAvoid pastels so pale they blend into your skin; add a deeper blouse to frame the face.
Wheatish or mediumAlmost every pastel, especially peach, mint, lavender and dusty pinkYou can wear tone on tone; a gold border or zari adds warmth.
OliveMuted pastels: sage, dusty lavender, mauve, dusty pinkVery sweet candy pastels can look slightly grey against olive skin.
Dusky or deepClearer, brighter pastels: lavender, mint, powder blue, peach, butter yellowChoose clean rather than greyed pastels for contrast, and a slightly deeper blouse colour for balance.

The short version: deep skin wears pastels beautifully when they are clear and luminous, and fair skin does best with pastels that have a little depth or dust in them. If a pastel ever looks flat on you, the fix is usually the blouse, not the saree.

How Fabric Changes a Pastel

Solenne lavender floral print pure chiffon pastel saree by MAYIN

The same lavender looks different in mul cotton, chiffon and linen, because each fabric handles light differently. Pale colours make that difference more obvious than dark ones do. It is one of the most useful things to know before you buy a pastel online.

Light colours show what is underneath far more than dark ones. With a sheer pastel, wear a petticoat in the same shade as the saree or close to your skin tone, never white under peach or pink. Our saree petticoat guide explains how to choose.

Every MAYIN saree is 5.5 metres long and 45 inches wide, and the blouse piece, where there is one, is extra. Mul cotton comes without a blouse piece, mul modal has a 1 metre running blouse piece, pure chiffon a 1 metre crepe blouse piece and handloom linen a 1 metre blouse piece. Check the product page for the jamdani. For a fuller comparison see what is a chiffon saree and what is a mul cotton saree.

Pastel by Occasion

Pastels are at their best in daylight, but they are not only for daytime. This matrix shows where each family works best. Filled chips are the strongest choice; outlined ones work with the right fabric and styling.

MehendiMint, seafoam and pistachio nod to henna green. See the mehendi saree guide.
OfficeLavender, dusty pink, powder blue and ivory in mul cotton or linen look polished without trying.

FarewellFloral pastel chiffon photographs softly under stage lights. See the farewell saree guide.

For a Karwa Chauth evening, red and deep pinks remain the tradition in most families, but a soft pink such as Florise, a hand embroidered pink floral chiffon, sits comfortably beside them if you prefer a gentler look.

Pastels at Weddings

Pastel sarees used to be reserved for daytime family functions. Over the past decade they have moved to the centre of Indian weddings, and fashion writers usually trace the shift to a handful of celebrity weddings.

How pastel became a wedding colour
2017Anushka SharmaA blush Sabyasachi lehenga at her wedding in Tuscany; ELLE India calls it the turning point.
2022Alia BhattAn ivory Sabyasachi saree for an intimate home wedding.
2023Kiara AdvaniA blush Manish Malhotra lehenga for her wedding.
2023Rocky Aur RaniSoft pastel sarees on screen kept the look in the spotlight.
2026Trend reportsMint, blush, lavender and icy blue lead the 2026 saree trend lists, especially for everyday and daytime wear.

Part of the reason is practical. Smaller, daytime and outdoor weddings became more common, and soft colours photograph well in natural light. 2026 wedding guest guides recommend mint, blush, powder blue and soft lilac for morning ceremonies, and emerald, navy, wine and plum for the evening.

Good to know
Two etiquette points for guests. Some families consider all-white or very pale ivory unlucky at a wedding, so add colour through the blouse or border if you are unsure. And if the bride herself is wearing pastel, ask before you turn up in the same shade. More ideas in wedding guest saree looks.

Blouse Colours for Pastel Sarees

There are three ways to go: tone on tone, a deeper version of the same colour; contrast, a jewel tone that makes the pastel look brighter; or metallic, for festivity. Tone on tone is the most flattering for fair skin and the safest for the office. Contrast works especially well on deeper skin.

With a printed pastel, pick the blouse from the deepest colour in the print.

A black blouse can work with lavender or powder blue for a modern evening look, but it tends to feel heavy in daylight. White blouses suit gingham and striped pastels for a crisp, casual look. Jewellery and Makeup

Pastels are soft, so jewellery has room to speak. Let your undertone pick the metal and the occasion pick the weight.

Pairings that work
PearlsThe easiest match for every pastel, from office studs to a layered strand at a day wedding.
Rose goldBlends with blush, lavender and mint, and suits neutral undertones.
GoldBest where the saree has zari, such as Calm, Poise and Buttercream, and on warm undertones.
SilverCool and clean with lavender, powder blue and icy pink, especially on cool undertones.
Soft stonesAquamarine with blue and mint, amethyst with lavender, morganite with pink, peach topaz with peach.
Contrast stonesEmerald with lavender or pink, ruby with mint, for an evening lift.

For makeup, choose one feature. A rose or berry lip gives a pastel saree definition; a defined eye with a nude lip works for the evening. Avoid matching your eyeshadow exactly to the saree, which tends to flatten the look. On deeper skin, a warm bronze glow on the cheeks keeps a pale saree from looking chalky.

Keeping Light Colours Light

The biggest complaint about pastel sarees is that they yellow or pick up marks. Yellowing usually comes from three things: sweat and body oils left in the fabric, detergent build-up, and storage in airtight plastic. All three are easy to avoid.

Pastel care checklist
Do not put a worn pastel away for months without cleaning it, even if it looks clean. Air it after a short wear and clean it before long storage.
Mul cotton and mul modal without zari, painting or embroidery: gentle cold hand wash. Chiffon, linen, jamdani, hand painted, embroidered and zari sarees: dry clean only.
Use a mild detergent in moderate amounts and rinse thoroughly. Skip chlorine bleach.
Dry in the shade, inside out. Strong sun can fade soft colours.
Let the saree air dry fully before folding.
Store in a breathable cotton or muslin bag in a cool, dark cupboard, not in plastic.
Refold every few months so creases do not set or fade along the folds.
Everyday hazards for light colours
Watch for
✓Kajal and foundation on the pallu and neckline
✓Sweat marks under the arms on hot days
✓Turmeric at a haldi
✓Henna at a mehendi
✓Lipstick on the pallu
Avoid
✕Hot water, which sets marks
✕Rubbing stains hard
✕Perfume sprayed directly on the saree
✕Ironing over a mark

Questions People Ask

What colours count as pastel?

Any colour lightened with plenty of white so it is pale and soft: baby pink, blush, lavender, lilac, powder blue, mint, peach and butter yellow are the classics. Dusty versions such as mauve and sage are pastels with a little grey added.

Do pastel sarees suit dark or dusky skin?

Yes. Choose clear, bright pastels such as lavender, mint, powder blue, peach and butter yellow rather than greyed ones, and add a slightly deeper blouse for balance.

Which pastel suits wheatish skin?

Almost all of them. Peach, mint, lavender and dusty pink are especially flattering, and a gold border adds warmth.

Is a pastel saree good for a wedding?

It is ideal for a day wedding, haldi or mehendi. For an evening function, choose a dusty pastel in chiffon or with zari and wear stronger jewellery.

Which blouse colour goes with a pastel saree?

Go tone on tone with a deeper shade of the same colour, contrast with a jewel tone such as emerald or navy, or add gold or silver for festivity.

Which jewellery goes with a pastel saree?

Pearls and rose gold suit every pastel. Choose silver for cool shades and cool undertones, and gold where the saree has zari or your undertone is warm.

Which pastel is best for haldi or mehendi?

Butter yellow and peach for haldi, mint, seafoam and pistachio for mehendi.

Are pastel sarees good for the office?

Yes. Lavender, dusty pink, powder blue and ivory in mul cotton or linen look polished and are easy to repeat with different blouses.

Is pastel pink the same as baby pink, blush or peach?

Baby pink is the classic pastel pink, blush is a little warmer and more muted, and peach leans orange. All three count as pastels.

Which fabric is best for a pastel saree in summer?

Mul cotton is the coolest and gives a soft matte finish. Pure chiffon and handloom linen are good for dressier summer occasions.

How do I stop a light-coloured saree from yellowing?

Clean it before storing it for long, dry it fully in the shade and store it in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic. Avoid chlorine bleach and heavy detergent.
