Saree for Teachers: Fabrics, Colours and Drapes for the Classroom

Lilac Blush plain lilac mul cotton saree by MAYIN, a saree for teachers

The best saree for teachers is a light, breathable cotton in a calm colour: plain or quietly patterned mul cotton or mul modal for everyday teaching, and handloom linen for assemblies, parent meetings and inspection days. It should be easy to drape, stay put while you write on the board and walk the corridors, and wash at home at the end of the week. This guide covers what state dress codes have actually said, fabrics for a long standing day, colours that hide chalk dust, prints, board work and the pallu, blouses and footwear, weather and the commute, a six saree week on a budget, removing chalk and ink, and Teacher’s Day.

What Dress Codes Have Said

There is no single national dress code for teachers in India. A saree is not compulsory across the country, but several state education departments have issued guidance in recent years, and the common thread is clear: modest, comfortable clothing in sober or light colours, with nothing flashy. Here is what has been reported. Rules change and differ between government and private schools, so always check your own school’s policy.

Teacher dress codes as reported
State and dateWhat was reportedIn practice
Maharashtra, Government Resolution of 16 March 2024Women teachers may wear a saree, or salwar or churidar with kurta and dupatta. Jeans, T-shirts, dark coloured clothes and clothes with designs or prints discouraged.Plain or very quiet sarees in light and mid tones
Assam, Department of School Education, 20 May 2023Saree, salwar suit or mekhela chador. T-shirts, jeans and leggings not allowed. Clean, modest, decent clothes in sober colours.Sober colours, neat drape
Kerala, 12 November 2021The state government clarified that a saree is not mandatory for women college teachers; they may dress as convenient within norms of decency.A saree is a choice, not a rule
Himachal Pradesh advisory, 19 April 2025Saree, salwar kameez, palazzo, pant kameez, churidar or formal shirt and trousers. Bright, flashy and party wear discouraged. Voluntary.Leave party wear for parties
Himachal Pradesh government CBSE schools, reported 1 October 2026Options reported to include a saree with a blazer, in colours such as light lilac, lilac purple and navy blue, with black footwear. Exemptions for medical reasons and pregnancy.Lilac and navy, with a layer
Chandigarh, 30 June 2025An order asking for an off white saree with a beige or gold border was withdrawn the same day after objections.Guidance can change quickly
Good to know
These summaries are based on news reports of each order or advisory. They are not legal advice and they may since have been updated. Your school’s own rules and your head of school have the final word.

Read together, these orders describe the kind of saree most teachers already reach for: a plain or lightly patterned cotton in a calm shade. Notice that Maharashtra discourages dark colours and prints, while Himachal Pradesh lists navy. Where the guidance is unclear, light and mid tones with a small, regular pattern or none at all are the safest choice everywhere.

Fabric for a Long Standing Day

Teaching is a physical job. You stand for most of a seven or eight hour day, raise your arms to the board, bend over desks, climb stairs and often travel on a crowded bus or a two wheeler. The weight of the saree matters: a heavy drape you barely notice at a two hour function becomes tiring by the sixth period.

Best fitAlso works Filled means best fit. Plain mul cotton and mul modal are gentle cold hand wash; linen, jamdani, chiffon and tissue are dry clean.

Mul cotton is our lightest saree and the most comfortable in heat. It is soft, breathes well and settles close to the body, with a gentle, slightly crushed look by the end of the day that is part of its character. Plain colours such as Cobalt Crumble, Lilac Blush and Olive Oasis are ₹1,699 and come without a blouse piece.

Mul modal is the easiest fabric for a long teaching day. It is as light as mul but smoother, and it creases much less, so the saree you draped at seven still looks pressed at three. Mauve Melody, Cocoa and Dusty Rose are ₹1,899 with a 1 metre running blouse piece.

Handloom linen is cool and structured, holds its pleats and looks the most formal, which makes it ideal for assemblies, parent teacher meetings, inspections and annual day. Calm in lavender and The Go To in ivory have a fine zari border and a 1 metre blouse piece; linen is dry clean, so most teachers keep it for one or two days a week. For more on each fabric, read mul cotton vs mul modal and what is a linen saree.

Colours, and the Chalk Dust Test

Beyond looking sober, colour has a practical side in a classroom. White chalk dust settles on the pleats and the pallu, and it shows most on navy, black and deep solid colours. Light and mid tones hide it, and small prints hide it even better. Whiteboard marker and ink, on the other hand, show most on white and pale plain fabric.

Mid tones: smart and forgiving

Deep shades: lovely, but brush often
Navy

A good working wardrobe mixes all three. Light colours such as Mint Meadow and Fairy Tale in baby pink are the easiest on a chalkboard day. Mid tones such as Toasted Almond and Mauve Melody look professional and do not show much. Keep deep shades such as Cocoa and True Garnet for whiteboard classrooms, meetings and days with fewer periods at the board, and check whether your school discourages dark colours.

Plain, Stripes, Checks or Dots

Plain sarees are the backbone of a teaching wardrobe, but small, regular patterns are just as appropriate in most schools, hide chalk and creases better, and make a week of sarees feel less repetitive. The rule of thumb: if the pattern reads as texture from across the classroom, it works.

Patterns that work in a classroom
Plain
The most formal and the easiest to pair. Lilac Blush and Cobalt Crumble with an ivory blouse work in any school.
Gingham checks
Small checks look neat and friendly, and they hide chalk dust well. Cloudless Sky, Spring Fern, Blush Orchard and Apricity.
Small dots
Tiny dots read as calm texture. The Nude Dot in beige and Moonlit Pearl in white mul modal.
Stripes
Thin stripes look crisp and orderly. Tokyo, a thin multicolour stripe, is cheerful enough for a Friday or an activity day.
Contrast border
A plain body with a coloured border is traditional and smart: Citrus Shift in turquoise.
Checked linen
For a structured, formal pattern, Corner Office in checked handloom linen is made for meeting days.

What to leave for the weekend: large florals, loud multicolour prints, heavy zari, sequins and anything shiny. They are not wrong, but they are what most dress code guidance means by flashy or party wear. Browse our checked sarees and striped sarees for more.

Board Work and the Pallu

No other job asks as much of a drape. You lift your arm to write a hundred times a day, lean over desks, crouch beside a student and stand up again. A pallu that slides, a pleat that opens or a sleeve that drags through chalk will distract you all day. These steps fix almost all of it.

A drape that survives the school day
1
Pleat and pin the pallu at the shoulderAn open pallu slips the moment you raise your arm. Pleat it neatly and pin it with two safety pins at the shoulder, on the inside of the blouse.
2
Keep the pallu to hip lengthA long pallu sweeps the desk and the chalk ledge. Pleat it so it ends at the hip or just below.
3
Add a hip pinOne small pin where the pallu crosses the left hip stops the drape loosening when you bend over desks.
4
Pin the front pleatsFive to seven even pleats, pinned together on the inside, so they hold through stairs and corridor duty.
5
Set the hem for your shoesDrape with your school shoes on; the hem should just touch the top of the foot, never the floor.
6
Wear your ID card over the pinned palluClip the lanyard so it hangs over the pleated pallu rather than under it, where it drags the fabric.

Light sarees make this easier: mul cotton and mul modal pleat quickly, sit flat once pinned and do not pull on the shoulder. If you are new to draping or want a faster morning, our guide to how to drape a mul cotton saree takes you through it, and a fitted cotton petticoat from our petticoat guide keeps everything in place.

Blouse, Footwear and Jewellery

The teaching blouse
SleevesElbow or three quarter sleeves. Long enough to look formal, short enough to stay out of the chalk.
ArmholeAsk your tailor for a little ease at the armhole so you can raise your arm to the top of the board without the blouse riding up.
NeckRound, boat or a modest V, at medium height at the back.
FabricSoft cotton, lined only where needed, breathes best through a long day. Avoid stiff or shiny blouse fabrics.
ColoursIvory, black, navy and one matching shade cover most plain sarees. Mul cotton comes without a blouse piece.
CollarA collared shirt blouse is crisp and practical with plain mul or linen.

Footwear matters as much as the saree. You will stand for hours, so choose shoes for comfort first: cushioned flats, kolhapuris with a padded sole, loafers or block heels under two inches. Closed shoes are best for the monsoon and for schools that ask for black footwear.

The blazer is worth a mention. A plain navy, grey or black blazer over a light cotton saree looks smart and keeps you warm in a cold classroom, and it is one of the options reported for teachers in Himachal Pradesh’s government CBSE schools. With a blazer, always pleat and pin the pallu. See winter saree looks for more layering.

Commute safety
On a two wheeler or a bus
✓Pin the pallu at the shoulder and tuck the loose end in at the waist
✓Keep the hem and pallu well clear of wheels and chains
✓Gather the pleats in one hand when you climb on or off
✓Flats on the commute; keep any heels at school
Avoid
✕A loose, open pallu on any vehicle
✕A hem that touches the ground on bus steps
✕Heavy sarees for daily travel
✕Leaving pins with sharp ends exposed

A Six Saree Week on a Budget

Most teachers want a set of sarees they can rotate without thinking. Six is a practical number: one for each school day, with a mix of colours and patterns so the week does not look repetitive, and a mix of fabrics so you are not ironing every evening.

The week above comes to about ₹14,000. Swap Calm and Spring Fern for two more plain mul cottons and six sarees cost just under ₹11,000. A plain mul cotton saree at ₹1,699, worn once a week through a 40 week school year, works out to about ₹42 a wear in its first year, and less every year after with good care. Our sarees under ₹2,000 and the guide to the best sarees under ₹2,000 have more options.

Chalk, Marker and Ink

Every teacher’s saree meets chalk, whiteboard marker or a pen sooner or later. These steps are for plain mul cotton and mul modal, which are gentle cold hand wash. Linen, jamdani, hand painted, zari and chiffon sarees are dry clean only, so take them to the cleaner and tell them what the stain is.

Cleaning a cotton saree after school
1
Chalk: keep it dryShake the saree out and brush the dust off with a soft, dry clothes brush before any water touches it. Wet chalk smears into the weave.
2
Whiteboard marker and ink: dab, do not rubLay the stain face down on a clean cloth and dab the back with a little rubbing alcohol on cotton wool, so the ink moves into the cloth below.
3
Test firstTry the alcohol on a hidden corner, such as the inside of the tuck, to make sure the dye does not lift.
4
Rinse and wash coldRinse the area in cold water, then give the saree its usual gentle cold hand wash with a mild detergent.
5
Dry in the shade, then checkLook at the spot before you iron it. Heat can set what is left of a stain.

Permanent marker and red ink are harder; treat them the same day. For routine care, read how to wash cotton, chiffon and linen sarees.

Teacher’s Day and Gifting

Teacher’s Day in India falls on 5 September, the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the teacher and philosopher who became India’s second President. Many teachers dress up a little for the day, and in many schools senior students take over classes, often in a saree, for the first time. It is a good day for a saree that is a step above daily wear while still feeling right in school: a handloom linen such as Composure or Calm, or a Dhakai jamdani such as Lilac Bloom. Students borrowing the look can start with our college and farewell sarees.

Gifting a saree to a teacher
Choose a calm colour she can wear to school: lilac, mauve, blue, mint or a soft neutral.
Mul modal or linen come with a blouse piece, which makes a more complete gift; mul cotton does not.
A saree is 5.5 metres and fits everyone, so you do not need her size.
For a class or parents’ group gift, handloom linen or a jamdani feels special without being impractical.
Shipping is free across India and cash on delivery is available; returns and exchanges are accepted within 7 days.

Questions People Ask

Which saree is best for teachers for daily wear?

A light, breathable cotton: mul cotton for heat and comfort, or mul modal if you want fewer creases. Both are gentle cold hand wash.

Is cotton or linen better for teachers?

Mul cotton and mul modal are lighter and wash at home, so they suit everyday teaching. Handloom linen is more structured and formal, and it is dry clean, so it suits meeting days and assemblies.

Is a saree compulsory for women teachers in India?

No, not across India. Kerala clarified in 2021 that a saree is not mandatory for women college teachers, and states such as Maharashtra, Assam and Himachal Pradesh list it as one of several options. Check your own school’s rules.

What is the dress code for female teachers in government schools?

It varies by state. Recent orders have asked for modest, comfortable clothing in sober or light colours, discouraged jeans and T-shirts, and listed the saree alongside suits and other options.

Which colours look professional for teachers?

Light and mid tones such as lilac, powder blue, mint, taupe, mauve, cobalt and olive. Deep shades like navy also look professional but show chalk dust.

Can teachers wear printed sarees?

Small, regular patterns such as gingham, thin stripes and small dots are fine in most schools. Some guidance, such as Maharashtra’s, discourages prints, so check your school’s policy.

How do I keep the pallu out of the way while writing on the board?

Pleat the pallu, keep it to hip length and pin it at the shoulder with two safety pins, then add a hip pin on the left side.

What blouse is best for teachers?

A soft cotton blouse with elbow or three quarter sleeves, a modest neck and a little ease at the armhole so you can raise your arm comfortably.

What footwear is comfortable with a saree for standing all day?

Cushioned flats, padded kolhapuris, loafers or block heels under two inches. Closed shoes are best in the monsoon.

How many sarees does a teacher need?

Six covers a school week without repeats. Six mul sarees under ₹2,000 each come to just under ₹11,000.

What saree should I gift a teacher?

A calm colour in mul modal or handloom linen, both of which come with a blouse piece. A Dhakai jamdani is a special choice for a group gift.

Are synthetic sarees OK for teachers in summer?

They are easy to wash, but most synthetics breathe less than cotton and can feel hot over a full day. Mul cotton is cooler for a long summer day in the classroom.
