Holi Saree Guide: How to Choose a Saree to Play Holi or for a Party

Bright Side white mul cotton saree with yellow border by MAYIN

The best saree for Holi depends on whether you will play with wet colour or only meet friends over dry gulal. For playing, wear a light mul cotton saree in white, a bright plain or a busy print that you are happy to see stained; for a Holi party or milan with dry colour, a printed chiffon or a yellow or white saree you want to keep looking new is the better choice. In 2027 Holika Dahan falls on Sunday 21 March and Rangwali Holi on Monday 22 March in most calendars. This guide covers fabrics, white and yellow sarees, prints, a drape that stays put, Holika Dahan and office Holi, regional customs and washing the colour out. You will find our white and yellow cotton picks in the Holi sarees collection.

Holi 2027: Dates and the Days Around It

Holi falls on the Phalguna full moon, roughly forty days after Basant Panchami, so its date moves each year; in 2026 it was 3 and 4 March. In 2027 most calendars put Holika Dahan, the bonfire, on the evening of Sunday 21 March and the day of colours, also called Dhulandi or Rangwali Holi, on Monday 22 March. Holi is a holiday in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat and many other states.

21 MarHolika DahanBonfire on Sunday evening
22 MarHoli and Dol JatraThe day of colours, Monday

Two cautions. The Braj dates above are expected dates; the temples and local administration in Mathura confirm them closer to the time. Dol Jatra in Bengal sometimes falls a day earlier than North Indian Holi, as it did in 2026, so check a Bengali panjika or your local panchang before you plan. We have not listed muhurat times for the bonfire: they vary by city, and your family priest or panchang is the right source. If you are dressing for Saraswati Puja in February, the same yellow saree can come out again for Holi.

Two Sarees: One to Play, One for the Party

Wet colour, water balloons and pichkaris are hard on cloth; a Holi milan, a society brunch or an office celebration with dry gulal is not. Decide which kind of Holi you are going to, and if it is both, plan two sarees and change in between.

A good playing saree costs less than you might think. Plain, striped and bordered mul cotton such as Lemonade, Saturday and Bright Side sit between ₹1,699 and ₹1,999, are cool in late-March heat and can go straight into a cold-water rinse. The party saree is where printed pure chiffon earns its place: Liora, Zyra and Elara are ₹3,399, and Eden and Rouge Waves are ₹3,999. They are light, drape neatly and photograph well, but they are dry clean only, so keep them for gatherings where colour stays dry.

Which Fabrics Cope With Colour

Fabric matters more than colour on Holi. Cotton and linen are absorbent plant fibres, so wet colour soaks straight into them; that is what makes them cool to wear and also why wet colour is hard to shift. Dry gulal behaves differently. On a smooth, closely woven fabric it tends to sit on the surface and brush off, while a slubby, textured weave holds on to the powder. Dark pastes, metallic colours and anything wet stain far more than dry powder. No fabric is stain-proof; the chart shows how much you are risking.

Best fitAlso works Filled means best fit. Mul cotton and mul modal without zari, embroidery or hand painting, and acrylic cotton, are a gentle cold hand wash; everything else here is dry clean.

Mul cotton is the classic playing fabric: thin, breathable and quick to rinse. Mul modal, such as Amber in yellow, is softer and more fluid, is also a cold hand wash, and comes with a 1 metre running blouse piece; mul modal is not a natural fibre (it is made from wood pulp) but it is breathable and comfortable in the heat. Urban Tide is an acrylic cotton in colour-blocked stripes that hides a lot of gulal and washes by hand, which makes it a sensible choice for a daytime society party. Linen’s slubby texture holds on to dry powder, so keep it for an evening milan where little colour is played; fine jamdani is too delicate for a pichkari, so keep it for gatherings with little or no colour. Hand painted, zari, tissue and embroidered sarees are for gatherings with no colour at all, because colour and water can mark paint, metallic thread and embroidery for good. For a deeper look at fabrics, read mul cotton vs mul modal and our saree fabric guide.

The White Saree for Holi

Bright Side white mul cotton saree with a yellow border by MAYIN for Holi

White is the colour most people look for in a Holi saree, and for good reason. Every colour shows up brightly on it, so the photos are joyful, and a white cotton is cool in the March sun. Wearing white on Holi is a popular custom rather than a religious rule; it is popular because white shows the colours best and because many people play in clothes they will not wear again.

Here is the honest part. A white cotton saree that has been through wet colour will probably not come back fully white. Dry gulal often rinses out; wet colour and dark pastes usually leave a tint. If you want to wear it again as a white saree, keep it for a dry-gulal party; if you play in it, be happy to keep it as next year’s Holi saree, tint and all.

Good to know
Light sarees turn more see-through once they are wet. Match the petticoat to the saree where you can; if you have no match on a light saree, nude usually shows less than white. A slightly thicker cotton petticoat is worth it for playing. Our saree petticoat guide has more, and blouse ideas for a white saree covers the pairings.

Yellow, Bright Plains and Holi Prints

If white is not for you, Holi is the one festival where almost any bright colour is right. Yellow is the most popular alternative: it is the colour of Basant, and the same yellow saree carries you from Saraswati Puja in February to Holi in March. Lemonade (₹1,699) is a plain yellow mul cotton for playing, Amber (₹1,899) the softer mul modal version, and Harvest Sun (₹2,199) a mustard gingham that hides gulal well. For a party, Aisha is an embroidered yellow mul cotton (₹2,999, dry clean), and Liora and Eden are yellow printed pure chiffon.

Prints are the playing saree’s secret. A busy pattern hides faint residue after the wash, so a printed saree survives Holi looking far better than a plain pastel. What people search for as a Holi print saree is usually one that already looks splashed with colour: multicolour stripes, colour blocks, dots and cheerful checks.

Prints that hide colour well
Multicolour stripes
Multicolour, white
Tokyo (₹1,999) and Saturday (₹1,899) are striped mul cotton in many colours. Faint gulal simply joins the stripes. Ideal for playing.
Colour block
Multicolour
Urban Tide is acrylic cotton in bold blocks of colour, a hand wash, and a good daytime party saree. Keep it away from the bonfire.
Polka dots
White, pink
Moonlit Pearl in white and Vintage Speckle in dusty rose pink are block-printed mul modal with a running blouse piece. Dots look like flecks of gulal on purpose.
Gingham
Yellow, pink
Harvest Sun in mustard and Blush Orchard in soft pink are mul cotton checks that forgive splashes.
Leheriya print
Pink, purple
Rouge Waves is a pink and purple leheriya print on pure chiffon, a party saree with the movement of rippling colour.
Florals
Yellow, lime green, orange
Liora in yellow, Zyra in lime green and Elara in orange are floral prints on pure chiffon for a Holi party.

A Drape That Stays Put While You Play

A free-flowing pallu and floor-length pleats are a nuisance when you are ducking water balloons on wet floors. Five minutes of extra pinning fixes that.

The Holi drape, step by step
1
Start with a fitted blouse and a firm petticoatA cotton blouse with sleeves and a petticoat with a firm drawstring hold everything in place once the saree is wet and heavier.
2
Raise the hem to the ankleTuck the saree so the hem clears your ankles. Trailing pleats soak up water, collect colour and are easy to step on.
3
Pin the pleatsMake five to seven pleats, tuck the pleats in at the navel, facing left, and put a safety pin through them from the inside.
4
Pleat and pin the palluPleat the pallu narrowly and pin it at the shoulder to the blouse. A loose, open pallu is the first thing to be grabbed or to drag on the floor.
5
Tuck the endBring the end of the pallu round your back and tuck it into the waist at the front or the side, the way many women do for housework, and pin it there. Your hands stay free.
6
Check it moves with youWalk, sit and lift your arms. If anything pulls or slips, add a pin now rather than in the middle of the fun.

To save time on a busy morning, our pre-draped saree guide explains how to pre-pleat: fold and pin the pleats the night before, with nothing sewn. For mul cotton specifically, see how to drape a mul cotton saree, and for other styles, saree draping styles.

Good to know
At Holika Dahan, keep your pallu pinned and tucked, stand well back from the fire, and keep loose ends and long hair away from it. Light chiffon pallus and synthetic blends such as acrylic are best left for the next day’s party. Cotton is the comfortable choice for the evening, but no saree is safe near flames, so keep your distance.

For office Holi, check how much colour your workplace plays with; if teams play properly, carry a change of clothes and a zip bag. For a party, our party wear saree styling guide has blouse and jewellery ideas that work just as well with dry gulal.

Braj, Bengal and Santiniketan

If you plan to travel for Holi, these celebrations each call for a slightly different approach.

Regional Holi at a glance
Lathmar Holi, Barsana and NandgaonMen from Nandgaon arrive in Barsana, traditionally in white kurtas and turbans, and the women of Barsana playfully meet them with lathis; the next day the roles reverse at Nandgaon. Wear something you expect to lose to colour.
Vrindavan and MathuraBanke Bihari temple in Vrindavan celebrates with flower petals as well as colour; Mathura plays on Dhulandi. Expect big crowds in narrow lanes.
Dol Jatra, BengalMany families begin by touching abir to the feet of elders and to photographs of departed family members, and Radha and Krishna are swung in decorated palanquins. The day also marks the birth anniversary of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
Basanta Utsav, SantiniketanThe Visva-Bharati campus tradition, where students in yellow or white, with flower garlands, sing and dance and greet each other with abir.

For Braj, dress for the crowd rather than the camera: sturdy shoes for slippery streets, a waterproof pouch for your phone, an early start, and company, especially as a woman. Wear mul cotton you do not mind losing to colour, pinned as in the drape section above. For Dol, a white saree with gold and red detailing such as Devi or a yellow mul cotton suits the morning puja with dry abir.

Basanta Utsav has changed. In 2025 Visva-Bharati held it a few days before Dol, did not allow abir or dust colours and kept it closed to outsiders, citing the campus’s UNESCO World Heritage status. Check the university’s notice before planning a trip; for students taking part, yellow or white light cotton, such as Lemonade or Bright Side, fits the tradition.

Blouse, Footwear and What to Carry

Our mul cotton sarees come without a blouse piece, so plan a cotton blouse you already own. Mul modal sarees come with a 1 metre running blouse piece and pure chiffon with a 1 metre crepe blouse piece; keep those blouses for the party saree. For playing, elbow or three-quarter sleeves keep colour off more of your arms, and a plain blouse in white, yellow or navy goes with almost every Holi saree.

Before you step out
HairTie it up in a bun or braid, or cover it with a cotton scarf. Many people oil their hair beforehand; it is a common habit rather than a proven fix.
EyesSunglasses keep powder out of your eyes.
SkinIf you are trying a new colour, patch test it a day before. Herbal or natural labels are not a guarantee.
FeetFlat, rubber-soled footwear you can rinse. Floors get wet and slippery quickly.
JewelleryLeave gold and pearls at home. Oxidised silver or nothing at all.
PhoneA waterproof pouch or zip bag, worn across the body.
Your Holi bag
Six to eight safety pins in the saree, plus two spare in your bag.
A spare blouse, or a full change of clothes if you are going on to a party.
A large zip bag for the wet saree, so you can rinse it as soon as you are home.
Wet wipes, a hair tie and a small mirror.
A water bottle; late March afternoons are hot.

Getting the Colour Out Afterwards

Act the same day; colour left in the fibres for days is much harder to shift. These steps are for plain mul cotton and mul modal. They give you the best chance, not a guarantee: wet and dark colours can leave a tint.

Mul cotton and mul modal, step by step
1
Shake off the dry colour outsideBefore the saree touches water, shake it out and brush off as much dry powder as you can. Wetting dry gulal first spreads it.
2
Rinse from the back in cold running waterHold the coloured areas under cold running water from the reverse side to push the colour out, not further in.
3
Wash on its ownHand wash in cold water with a mild, colour-safe detergent. Wash Holi clothes separately from everything else; colour bleeds.
4
Test before you try a remedyIf you want to try diluted vinegar or lemon, or any stain remover, test it first on a hidden spot such as the hem. These can lift the saree’s own dye along with the Holi colour.
5
Do not dry it until the colour is goneRepeat the wash while the saree is still wet. Never tumble dry or press a stained saree; heat can set colour for good.
6
Dry in the shadeDry flat or on a line in the shade. Strong sun can fade the saree itself, not just the stain.
Holi colour: quick rules
Do
✓Rinse the same day
✓Start with cold water
✓Test any remedy on the hem first
✓Shake off dry-clean sarees and take them to the cleaner, telling them it is Holi colour
Avoid
✕Soaking a printed or bordered saree overnight with other clothes
✕Chlorine bleach on anything with a coloured border or print
✕Tumble drying or ironing a stained saree
✕Washing chiffon, linen, tissue, zari or embroidery at home

Some advice says cold water only; some says warm water lifts dye better. Start with a cold rinse to flush loose powder, then follow your fabric’s care: for MAYIN mul cotton and mul modal, a gentle cold hand wash. Full instructions by fabric are in how to wash cotton, chiffon and linen sarees.

Questions People Ask

Which saree is best for Holi?

For playing with wet colour, a light mul cotton saree you can hand wash and are happy to see stained. For a Holi party with dry gulal, printed pure chiffon or mul modal looks dressier and stays wearable for other occasions.

Can I wear a white saree for Holi?

Yes, it is the most popular choice. Just expect a white cotton that has been through wet colour to keep a faint tint; if you want it to stay white, wear it only to a dry-gulal party.

Why do people wear white on Holi?

It is a popular custom rather than a religious rule. White shows every colour brightly, looks joyful in photos and is cool in the March heat.

What saree should I wear for a Holi party?

A printed pure chiffon or a mul modal print in a bright colour, with a blouse in a colour from the print and light jewellery. Keep zari, tissue and embroidered sarees for evening gatherings with no colour.

What are the best colours for a Holi saree?

White and yellow are the classics. Bright pinks, turquoise, orange and multicolour prints work well too, and prints hide leftover colour better than pale plains.

How do I wear a saree comfortably for Holi?

Raise the hem to the ankle, pin the five to seven pleats, pleat and pin the pallu at the shoulder and tuck its end into the waist. Add a sleeved cotton blouse and flat, rubber-soled footwear.

How do I remove Holi colour from a cotton saree?

Shake off the dry powder first, rinse from the back in cold running water, then hand wash on its own with a mild detergent. Test any remedy on the hem, repeat before drying, and dry in the shade.

When is Holi in 2027?

Most calendars give Holika Dahan on Sunday 21 March 2027 and Rangwali Holi on Monday 22 March 2027. Check your local panchang, as dates can differ by region.

What should I wear for office Holi?

A printed mul modal or cotton saree that hides a little gulal, with a spare top in your bag. Ask how much colour your office plays with before you choose.

What should I wear for Lathmar Holi in Barsana?

Clothes you are happy to lose to colour, a securely pinned drape, sturdy shoes for slippery lanes and a waterproof pouch for your phone. Go with company and start early.

What do people wear for Basanta Utsav?

Students traditionally wear yellow or white with flower garlands. The celebration has changed in recent years, so check Visva-Bharati’s notice before planning to attend.
