Bridesmaid Saree Guide: What to Wear for Your Sister's Wedding

Juliet mauve pink floral print pure chiffon saree by MAYIN

For your sister’s wedding, or any wedding where you are a bridesmaid, choose a saree that sits beside the bride’s colours without copying them, in a light fabric you can host, dance and sit through long rituals in. If several of you are dressing together, agree on one thing that stays the same, whether that is the colour, the saree or the blouse, and order identical sarees together and early. This guide covers coordinating a group, colours around the bride, each function, fabrics, budget, group orders, blouses across cities and the day itself.

What the Role Asks of Your Saree

The bride’s sister is rarely just a guest. In many families she helps the bride dress, carries thalis and gifts, sits beside her through rituals, leads the dancing at the sangeet and, in many North Indian weddings, plans the joota chupai, the playful hiding of the groom’s shoes. Close friends who stand with the bride do much the same, and bridesmaid groups are increasingly seen at Indian weddings of many faiths.

Four things to plan for
You will be workingRunning errands, greeting relatives and helping the bride. Choose a drape that stays put with your hands full.
You will be photographedYou stand next to the bride in most pictures, so your colour has to sit well beside hers.
You will be on your feetA wedding day can run past twelve hours. Weight and breathability matter more than you expect.
You are part of a setYour saree is read with the others in the line-up, not on its own.

Six Ways to Coordinate a Group

The simplest rule for a group is to pick one thing to be the same and let the rest vary. Too many rules look like a uniform; none look accidental.

Pick the one thing that stays the same
1. The same saree for everyone
Lavender
Everyone wears one design, such as Solenne in lavender. The most striking line-up and the easiest decision. Watch out: one design will suit some people more than others, so let the group see it before you order.
2. One colour, different shades
Lilac, amethyst, deep violet
An ombré from light to deep, for example Lilac Blush, Blueberry Pie and Twilight Bloom in plain mul cotton. Each person picks the shade that suits her. Watch out: lay them side by side in daylight to set the order.
3. One palette, different colours
Blush, mint, powder blue
Each person wears a different pastel from an agreed palette. Relaxed and flattering. Watch out: keep the colours at the same depth, all soft or all bright.
4. One design, different colours
Baby pink, pastel green, mustard
The same print in several colours, such as the gingham mul cotton of Blush Orchard, Spring Fern and Harvest Sun. Watch out: works best when the fabric and print scale are identical.
5. Different sarees, the same blouse
Gold
Everyone wears her own saree but the same blouse colour, often gold, ivory or a deep jewel tone. The kindest option for budgets and for sarees people already own. Watch out: agree the neckline and sleeve length too.
6. One print family
Pink, lavender
Different colours of related prints, for example pastel floral pure chiffon in pink and lavender, such as Elysia and Solenne. Watch out: keep everyone in the same fabric so no saree looks heavier or shinier than the rest.

For photos, run an ombré from light beside the bride to deep at the ends. Avoid one person in a much shinier fabric than the rest, because flash exaggerates sheen, and check every colour in daylight and under warm indoor light, since pastels can shift between the two.

Colours Around the Bride

Do not assume the bride is in red. Brides wear red or maroon in much of North India, many colours across the South, off-white and gold at many Kerala weddings, white at most Christian weddings, and plenty of brides now choose pastels, gold or ivory. Ask her for two things before anyone shops: her colour for each function, and a short list of colours she would rather nobody else wore.

Go easy on means avoid a close match, not the whole colour family: a deeper or lighter shade usually works if she is happy with it.

Lavender and dusty rose are popular with groups because they suit a wide range of skin tones and sit quietly beside most bridal colours. Lavender pure chiffon such as Solenne and Amaris, and pinks such as Juliet in mauve pink and Mauve Melody in plain mul modal, cover both families. For more pastel ideas, see our pastel saree guide.

Looking lovely without outshining her
Do
✓Keep your embroidery or zari one step lighter than hers
✓Choose a narrower border than hers if she wears a woven border
✓Wear simpler jewellery: one statement piece, not a full set
✓Match her mood: soft if she is soft, rich if she is rich
✓Check her no-go list before the group votes
Avoid
✕Her exact colour, unless she asks for it
✕Heavier work or more sparkle than the bride
✕A dramatically different style that pulls focus in photos
✕Assuming white or black is fine: some families consider them unsuitable for certain ceremonies

Function by Function

Bridesmaids do not have to coordinate for every function. Many groups pick one or two, often the sangeet and the wedding or reception, and dress individually for the rest.

What the bride’s sister wears, and why
FunctionWhat you will be doingSaree ideas
HaldiApplying turmeric paste and getting some on yourselfWashable yellow mul cotton or mul modal: Lemonade, Harvest Sun, Amber

ReceptionStanding for hours, greeting guests, stage photosEvening colour or sheen: Veyona, Silver, Vintage Wine

Haldi look for the bride’s sister

The sister is usually one of the first to apply the paste, so expect turmeric on your hands, arms and pallu. Wear yellow mul cotton such as Lemonade at ₹1,699 or the mustard gingham of Harvest Sun at ₹2,199, both gentle cold hand wash, and treat it as a saree that may keep a faint mark. Amber in yellow mul modal has a softer fall and comes with a running blouse piece. If you would rather stay out of the paste and dress up, Liora, a yellow floral pure chiffon, or Miss Earth, a yellow handloom cotton tissue saree with embroidery and zari, will look lovely in the photos, but both are dry clean only. Our haldi saree guide covers colours, flower jewellery and stain removal in detail.

Mehendi and sangeet

At the mehendi you may sit for hours while the henna is applied and dries, so pin the pallu over your shoulder and away from your hands: wet henna can mark fabric. Green is a popular choice in many families; Spring Fern in pastel green gingham and Zyra in lime green floral pure chiffon both work. More in our mehendi saree guide. For the sangeet, pure chiffon is the dancer’s fabric: it weighs little, swings with you and creases far less than cotton. Pin the pleats and pallu firmly, and rehearse once in the saree.

Wedding and reception for the bride’s sister

On the wedding day you are the bride’s right hand, and the rituals can run late into the night. A light fabric with a festive finish works best: Vintage Aqua is a hand embroidered chiffon, Damask Rose is a hand painted chiffon in pink, and Mauve Kiss is a pink mul cotton with embroidery and zari. At the reception you will greet guests and climb on and off the stage for hours. Blue floral pure chiffon such as Veyona or the soft metallic sheen of Silver, a plain handloom linen tissue, reads well under evening lights. Keep Vintage Wine for weddings where the bride is not in maroon. Our guide to a saree for a wedding reception has more evening ideas.

Fabrics for a Long Wedding

Fabric decides how you feel at hour ten, and plain fabrics are the easiest to buy in matching sets.

Best fitAlso works Filled means best fit. Plain mul cotton and mul modal are gentle cold hand wash; chiffon, embroidered, zari and tissue sarees are dry clean only.

Mul cotton is the lightest and coolest, ideal for daytime functions in heat. Mul modal is a breathable fabric made from wood pulp, with a slightly softer drape and a little more sheen. Every MAYIN pure chiffon is 100% Bemberg chiffon, and it is the best choice for dancing. Tissue gives wedding-day shine while staying light. All our sarees are 5.5 metres long and about 45 inches wide, so the drape is the same for everyone in the group. For a closer look at each fabric, read mul cotton vs mul modal and what is a chiffon saree.

Budget, and Who Pays

Bridesmaid outfits do not need to cost lakhs. Most sisters and friends buy for several functions, often from their own pocket, so coordinate one saree for the function that matters most and wear your own for the rest.

Price per saree
₹1,699
Plain mul cottonThe easiest ombré: Lilac Blush, Blueberry Pie, Twilight Bloom. Add blouse fabric.
₹1,899

₹2,199

₹3,499 to ₹4,299
Embroidered, hand painted and tissueVintage Aqua, Damask Rose, Mauve Kiss and Miss Earth at ₹3,499; Silver at ₹4,299.

To put numbers on it: five bridesmaids in matching Solenne pure chiffon come to ₹16,995 before blouses; the same five in a Lilac Blush and purple mul cotton ombré come to ₹8,495. Shipping is free within India, which helps when the sarees are going to several addresses.

Who pays: there is no fixed rule
The bride gifts themCommon when she has chosen a specific saree. Say so clearly at the start.
Each pays her ownFine if the group agrees a price ceiling everyone is comfortable with.
Split the costThe bride covers the saree, each bridesmaid covers her blouse and tailoring, or the other way round.
Mix and matchCoordinate only the sangeet saree, and let everyone wear her own for the other functions.

Whichever you choose, settle it before anyone votes on sarees. It is much harder to change the price after a design has been picked.

Ordering Several Sarees at Once

Group plans often go wrong when people order a week apart and the shades do not quite match. Fabric is dyed in batches, and two batches of the same colour can differ slightly. Hand painted, printed and handwoven sarees can also vary a little from piece to piece, which is part of their character, so plan for close rather than identical.

A group order, step by step
1
Agree the plan with the brideWhich functions you are coordinating, her colours for each, her no-go list and the budget.
2
Shortlist in the group chatShare two or three product links per function and set a deadline for votes.
3
Check availability for the full numberBefore everyone commits, make sure the quantity you need is available. If a cousin may join late, decide now whether to add one more.
4
Place one order, on one dayIdeally one person orders all the identical sarees together and has them delivered to one address, so they can be compared side by side.
5
Open and compare at onceLay the sarees out together in daylight within a day of delivery. Returns and exchanges are accepted within 7 days, so do not leave the parcel sealed until the wedding.
6
Send them on, with the blouse briefPass each saree on with the shared blouse spec so tailoring can start straight away.

Good to know
If the wedding is in the late 2026 season, it traditionally opens with Dev Uthani Ekadashi, around 19 or 20 November 2026 depending on the calendar, with muhurat dates through late November and the first half of December. For 2027, calendars such as Drik Panchang show the main windows as mid-January to mid-March, mid-April to early July, and November to mid-December, with few or no dates from August to October. Book your tailor early. The family pandit has the final word on dates, and Christian, Muslim, Sikh and civil weddings follow their own calendars. MAYIN also ships internationally, so bridesmaids abroad can order too; leave them extra time.

Blouses and Sizes Across Cities

This is the great advantage of a saree for a group: it is free size. Only the blouse and petticoat need fitting, each person can use her own tailor, and a shared blouse brief keeps the line-up looking like a set.

The shared blouse brief
Blouse colour and fabric, ideally bought in one lot for the whole group.
Front neckline shape and an approximate depth, for example a round or sweetheart neck.
Back neckline: agree a shape, and a range of depth so everyone stays comfortable.
Sleeve length: sleeveless, short, elbow or three quarter, the same for everyone.
Blouse length: a cropped or a regular length, so the midriff looks consistent in photos.
Closure: front hooks are easier for quick changes between functions.
Lining, and any piping or border detail you want repeated.

Each person then gives her tailor her own measurements: bust, around the body just above the waist, blouse length, shoulder width, front neck depth, back neck depth, around the arm and sleeve length, plus waist and length for the petticoat. Have someone else measure the back, or measure a blouse that already fits you well. Keep everyone’s numbers in one shared sheet. For neckline and sleeve ideas, see saree blouse neck designs and saree blouse sleeve designs.

For petticoats under light sarees such as mul cotton and chiffon, match the petticoat to the saree where you can; if you have no match on a light saree, nude usually shows less than white. Our saree petticoat guide explains fits and fabrics.

Getting Ready and Staying Comfortable

Book a draper, or the aunt who drapes best, well in advance, and drape first whoever is needed earliest for the rituals, often the sister. The night before, pre-pleat any embroidered, zari or tissue saree by folding the pleats and pinning them, with nothing sewn. On the day, five to seven pleats tucked in at the navel, facing left, is the standard Nivi drape. Our sarees come without fall or pico, so if you want either, add it to the tailoring plan. If you are short of time or new to draping, read how to drape a chiffon saree and our pre-draped saree guide.

Comfort through a long day
Pin the palluPleat and pin it at the shoulder so your hands are free for thalis, gifts and the bride’s lehenga or saree.
A petticoat that does not digA drawstring tied firmly but not tightly; you will sit and eat in it for hours.
Flats or block heelsYou will stand, dance and climb stage steps. Keep a pair of flats in your bag.
A change after haldiCarry a second saree or outfit if you are close to the paste.
A light stole for eveningsAir-conditioned halls and winter nights can be cold.
Water and a snackThe bride’s side often eats last.
The bridesmaids’ emergency kit
Ten to twelve safety pins, in a small tin.
Spare blouse hooks, needle and thread in the blouse colour.
Bobby pins, a comb and a small mirror.
Wet wipes, tissues and a zip bag for a stained saree.
Lipstick, compact and mints.
A phone power bank and the draper’s number.

The Groom’s Sister, Kerala and Christian Weddings

A few situations need their own thinking.

Special cases
The groom’s sisterShe coordinates with her own family, not necessarily with the bride’s group. In many North Indian families she welcomes the bride home and asks for a gift at the door, so she is photographed with the couple: the same rule applies, sit beside the bride’s colour, do not copy it.
Kerala weddingsBridesmaids take part in many Kerala weddings, including the Muslim mehendi and the Hindu thalapoli procession. Where the bride wears off-white and gold, bridesmaids usually choose pastels or colour rather than white.
Christian weddingsThe bride is usually in white, so bridesmaids wear a colour, often a shared pastel or a bright shade such as peach or lemon yellow, coordinated well in advance.
Bridesmaids from abroadA saree removes the sizing problem. Ship the saree, then have the blouse made locally to the shared brief.

At Kerala Hindu weddings, many women wear kasavu, and the bride is often in off-white and gold. Bridesmaids can sit beside her in a pastel pure chiffon such as Solenne, or in a coloured handloom linen with a zari border. Our Onam saree guide explains kasavu in more detail.

Questions People Ask

What should the bride’s sister wear at the wedding?

A saree that complements the bride’s colour without matching it, one step lighter in embroidery or zari, in a fabric light enough for hours of rituals and hosting. Hand embroidered or hand painted chiffon, tissue and embroidered mul cotton all work.

Can a bridesmaid wear the same colour as the bride?

Only if the bride asks. A lighter or deeper shade of her colour, or a colour that sits beside it, usually looks better in photos and keeps the focus on her.

What colour should bridesmaids wear at an Indian wedding?

Ask the bride first. Pastels such as lavender, dusty rose, peach and powder blue suit day functions and most skin tones; gold and jewel tones suit evenings.

Saree or lehenga for my sister’s wedding?

Both work. A saree is easier for a group in different cities because it is free size, light chiffon is comfortable for dancing, and you will wear it again.

What should the bride’s sister wear for haldi?

Yellow mul cotton or mul modal that can be hand washed in cold water, because you will likely help apply the paste. Keep chiffon, tissue and zari for later.

Which saree suits the bride’s sister at the reception?

Something with evening colour or sheen that is comfortable for standing: a floral pure chiffon, a hand embroidered chiffon or a linen tissue.

How do you coordinate bridesmaid sarees without everyone looking identical?

Pick one thing to keep the same: a single colour in different shades, one palette in different colours, one design in different colours, or the same blouse with different sarees.

Who pays for bridesmaid sarees in India?

There is no fixed rule. The bride may gift them, each bridesmaid may pay her own, or the cost may be split. Agree it before anyone chooses a saree.

Which fabric is best for dancing at the sangeet?

Pure chiffon. It is light, moves with you and creases far less than cotton. Pin the pleats and pallu before you dance.

Can bridesmaids wear white or black?

Some families consider white or black unsuitable for certain ceremonies, and at Christian and many Kerala weddings the bride wears white or off-white. Check with the bride first.

What should the groom’s sister wear?

The same principles: a colour that sits beside the bride’s, one step lighter in work. Coordinate with your own family, and share colour lists with the bride’s side so the groups do not clash.

How do bridesmaids in different cities get matching blouses?

Agree a shared blouse brief, buy the blouse fabric in one lot, and have each person’s blouse made by her own tailor to her own measurements.
