Frequently Asked Questions

What are the nine colours of Navratri?

Most lists use white, red, royal blue, yellow, green, grey, orange, peacock green and pink, and some include purple. The order changes each year, so check our Navratri saree colours guide for the 2027 list.

Why do the Navratri colours change every year?

The sequence follows the weekday on which Navratri begins, so it shifts from year to year. Different calendars and communities also publish slightly different lists.

Which list of Navratri colours should I follow?

Follow the one your family, society or local calendar uses. If friends are coordinating, agree on one list at the start.

Which saree is best for garba?

A light saree that moves, such as pure chiffon or soft mul cotton, with the pleats a little higher and the pallu pinned. Many women wear chaniya choli for garba itself and a saree for the puja and aarti.

What if I do not have a saree in the colour of the day?

Wear a neutral saree with a blouse in the day's colour, or a multicolour saree that includes it. Most people follow the spirit of the custom rather than an exact shade.

Navratri Sarees by Colour

In Maharashtra and Gujarat, and increasingly across India, many women wear a different colour on each of the nine days of Navratri. The colours follow the weekday on which Navratri begins, so the order changes every year, and calendars and communities publish slightly different lists. Our Navratri saree colours guide gives the 2027 list day by day; this edit gives you a saree in each colour that most lists use.

For Puja and for Garba

For the morning puja and evening aarti, soft mul cotton or a zari stripe keeps the look traditional; see our pooja sarees and the pooja saree guide. For garba and dandiya nights, choose something light that moves: Rouge Waves, a pink and purple leheriya print pure chiffon, swings as you turn, and mul cotton stays breathable in a crowded hall. Pin the pallu firmly, keep the pleats a little higher than usual and wear flat footwear you can dance in. The last days of Navratri fall during Durga Puja; see Durga Puja sarees and festive wear sarees.

Planning Nine Looks

Nine new sarees is a lot to ask, so mix and repeat. Wear plain mul cotton or mul modal for the quieter days, keep chiffon for the garba nights and save zari for Ashtami and Navami. One blouse in black, white or gold can serve several colours. If a day's colour is missing from your wardrobe, a blouse in that colour with a neutral saree follows the custom too.

Shades in This Edit

Our chiffon sarees come with a 1 m crepe blouse piece and mul modal sarees with a 1 m running blouse piece; mul cotton comes without one.
