Frequently Asked Questions

Why do people wear black on Makar Sankranti?

In Maharashtra, black is the custom on Sankranti in many families, even though it is avoided at most other festivals. The reasons handed down include that dark colours soak up the winter sun; none has a clear documented source, and for most families it is simply what their mothers and grandmothers wore.

Is Makar Sankranti 2027 on 14 or 15 January?

It depends on your local calendar. The Sun enters Capricorn on the night of Thursday 14 January 2027, so many panchangs keep the festival on Friday 15 January, while the central government holiday list gives 14 January. Check your family panchang.

Which colour saree should I wear for Pongal?

There is no fixed colour. Yellow and turmeric, mustard, green, red and off white with a border are popular for Thai Pongal, which falls on Friday 15 January 2027 in Tamil Nadu calendars.

What does a new bride wear on her first Sankranti?

In many Maharashtrian families, a new bride wears a black saree with halwa jewellery made of white sugar-coated sesame beads. A plain black saree lets the beads stand out.

Which fabric is best for a black Sankranti saree?

Mul cotton for daytime visits and repeat wear, since it is light and hand washable. Pure chiffon or zari-striped mul cotton suits an evening haldi-kunku, and handloom linen gives a crisp look for an office celebration.

What should I wear for Lohri night?

A warm red, maroon or mustard saree with a shawl and a longer sleeve blouse. Keep the pallu pinned, tuck loose ends away and stay a sensible distance from the bonfire.

Makar Sankranti Sarees

Makar Sankranti falls on 14 or 15 January 2027, depending on your local calendar: the Sun enters Capricorn on the night of 14 January. In Maharashtra, black is the traditional Sankranti saree colour in many families, the one festival of the year when black is chosen on purpose. Across the country the same harvest days are celebrated as Pongal, Lohri, Uttarayan and Magh Bihu, each with its own setting. This edit brings together our black sarees with a few yellow, red and zari pieces for all of them.

A Black Saree for Sankranti

A plain black saree is the easiest base for halwa jewellery, the white beads of sugar-coated sesame a new bride wears for her first Sankranti, because the beads show clearly against it. After Dark, plain black mul cotton at ₹1,699, hand washes in cold water, which helps through weeks of haldi-kunku visits. For the evening gatherings, Saanjh adds fine zari stripes and Noxana, a black floral print pure chiffon, dresses up for a society event. A red, mustard or gold blouse gives black a festive contrast; see which blouse goes with a black saree.

Pongal, Lohri, Uttarayan and Bihu

For Thai Pongal, on Friday 15 January 2027 in Tamil Nadu calendars, yellow, mustard, green, red and off white with a border are popular choices: Golden Hour in mustard linen, Miss Earth in yellow cotton tissue and Manjari in red. For Lohri, usually 13 January, a deep red such as Main Event with a shawl works on a cold night; keep the pallu pinned and away from the fire. On an Uttarayan rooftop, a light mul cotton print like Harvest Sun hides dust, and a pinned pallu stays clear of kite string. For Magh Bihu the mekhela chador is the traditional dress; if you prefer a saree, white with a red border, such as Kamakshi, echoes the red and cream palette.
