What Is Mul Cotton? Mulmul, Mal Cotton and How to Choose a Good One
By Nishita Nathani8 min read
Mul cotton, also written mulmul, malmal or mal cotton, is a fine, soft cotton woven loosely from thin yarn, which makes it very light, breathable and slightly sheer. It is one of the most comfortable fabrics for a saree in Indian heat, it softens with every wash, and it drapes close to the body in soft pleats. At MAYIN it is our most loved weave: handloom sarees, 5.5 m long and 45 inches wide, from Rs 1,699.
Mul, Mulmul, Malmal and Muslin
When you see any of these words on a saree, you are looking at the same light, airy cotton family. Our Dhakai jamdani sarees are woven on fine muslin, and our mul modal sarees are the smoother blend.
A Short History
How Mul Cotton Feels and Drapes

Mul cotton is light, cool and soft from the first wear. It does not have the stiffness of a starched cotton saree, so it falls close to the body and the pleats lie soft rather than standing out. It is forgiving for beginners because it does not fight you while you pleat, and it is easy to wear for a full day. Twilight Bloom, a plain deep violet mul cotton, shows how well the fabric takes a rich colour.
Is Mul Cotton See-Through?
Wear mul cotton over a cotton petticoat that matches the saree, and nothing shows. Under white and pastels, choose a white or skin tone petticoat and check it in daylight. Our petticoat guide explains colour and fit.
Mul Cotton Compared
Regular cotton sarees use thicker yarn and a tighter weave, so they are heavier, crisper and less see-through, and they often need starch. Mul cotton trades that structure for lightness and softness.
How to Tell Good Mul Cotton
When and Where to Wear It
Styles of Mul Cotton
Mul cotton takes colour and pattern beautifully. Choose from plain shades such as After Dark, checks and gingham such as Spring Fern, stripes such as Tokyo and zari stripes such as Raabta, polka dots such as The Nude Dot, embroidered florals, painted designs such as Apricot Bloom, and contrast borders such as Bright Side. Or shop by colour in green, white, blue, yellow, black and purple cotton.
Blouse and Petticoat
MAYIN mul cotton sarees come without a blouse piece, which leaves you free to choose any contrast; mul modal sarees come with a 1 m running blouse piece in the same fabric. A cotton blouse suits mul best, because it breathes in the same way. For colours, see our blouse ideas for every saree colour. All sarees ship without fall and pico, so you can wear them as they are or have them finished by your tailor.
Draping Mul Cotton
Mul cotton needs no starch. Iron it while slightly damp so the pleats lie flat, make 5 to 7 pleats, and pin them to a cotton petticoat, which grips better than a slippery one. Pleat the pallu and pin it at the shoulder from the inside. Because the fabric is soft, the pleats fall rather than stand, which looks neat and feels light. Our guide to draping a mul cotton saree goes step by step.
Washing and Care
We recommend hand washing. A washing machine, even on a delicate cycle, is harder on the fine, open weave. Handloom cotton can shrink very slightly in its first wash; washing in cold water keeps this to a minimum. Our guide on how to wash and store sarees has more.

Is mul cotton the same as mulmul or malmal?
Yes. Mul, mulmul, mal and malmal are different spellings of the same fabric. Muslin is its finer relative.
Is mul cotton good for summer?
It is one of the best fabrics for summer. The open weave lets air through and it stays comfortable in heat and humidity.
Can I wear mul cotton in winter?
In the south and on the coasts, yes. In north India, layer it with a shawl or jacket, or choose mul modal or linen for the coldest weeks.
Is a mul cotton saree see-through?
It is slightly sheer. Wear it over a matching cotton petticoat and nothing shows.
Mul cotton or regular cotton: which is better?
Mul cotton is lighter, softer and cooler; regular cotton is crisper and holds a sharper pleat. For hot days and long hours, mul cotton is more comfortable.
What is the difference between mul cotton and mul modal?
Mul modal blends mul cotton with modal. It is smoother, more fluid and a little less sheer, and MAYIN mul modal sarees come with a 1 m running blouse piece.
Does mul cotton shrink?
Very slightly in the first wash. Wash it in cold water to keep this to a minimum.
Can I machine wash a mul cotton saree?
We recommend a gentle hand wash in cold water. A machine is harder on the fine weave. Dry clean anything with zari, tissue or embroidery.
Does a mul cotton saree come with a blouse piece?
MAYIN mul cotton sarees come without one, so you can choose a contrast. Mul modal sarees come with 1 m.
Can I wear a mul cotton saree to the office?
Yes. Plain, checked and striped mul cotton is one of the most comfortable choices for a full working day.
How much does a mul cotton saree cost?
At MAYIN, plain mul cotton starts at Rs 1,699 and embroidered pieces go up to Rs 3,499.
