Winter Saree Looks: Linen, Tissue and Acrylic Cotton for Cooler Days

Line Item black striped handloom linen saree with zari border by MAYIN

To wear a saree in winter, choose a fabric with more body, such as handloom linen, acrylic cotton or cotton tissue, in a deeper colour. Add a full or three quarter sleeve blouse with a high or collared neck, wear thermal leggings and a fitted thermal top underneath, and finish with a shawl, jacket or long coat. Closed shoes and a pleated, pinned pallu keep the look neat under layers. This guide covers fabrics, colours, blouses, the warm layer underneath, outer layers, drapes that work with a jacket, footwear, looks for office, weddings, Diwali and Lohri, care and the mistakes to avoid.

Main Event burgundy handloom linen saree with zari border by MAYIN

Handloom linen is crisper and heavier than mul cotton and holds its shape under a jacket or shawl. It breathes, so it is comfortable in heated rooms and on milder winter days, and it comes with a blouse piece. Main Event in burgundy and After Hours in wine have fine zari borders that suit winter weddings and Diwali. Line Item, black stripes on linen, and Power Play in blue are sharp for the office.

Acrylic cotton has a denser, warmer hand than pure cotton and comes in bold colours, such as Urban Tide and Inkstorm. Cotton tissue adds a festive sheen for evening functions: Tarini in purple and Devina in gold.

Deep, warm colours feel right in winter light and pair easily with dark coats and shawls. Ivory with gold looks lovely against a camel or black coat. Plain mul modal in deeper shades, such as True Garnet in maroon and Cocoa in brown, is smooth, creases less and layers neatly.

The Winter Blouse

Blouse ideas for cold days
Full sleevesThe simplest way to stay warm. Elegant with linen and tissue.
Three quarter sleevesWarm enough for most days, easy under a jacket.
High neck or collarKeeps the neck warm and looks polished.
Turtleneck topA fitted knit top in place of a blouse; modern for casual days.
Lined blouseA cotton lining adds a little warmth and comfort.
Shirt blouseA crisp collared shirt, tucked into the petticoat, for the office.

Our guide to blouse designs for plain cotton sarees covers necklines and sleeves in more detail.

Warmth You Cannot See

The hidden layer
1
Thermal leggingsSkin tone thermal leggings under the petticoat keep your legs warm and do not show.
2
Thermal topA thin, fitted thermal camisole under the blouse.
3
Cotton petticoatStill the best base: it grips the saree. Choose a slightly thicker cotton in winter.
4
SocksThin skin tone socks with closed shoes or juttis.

Outer Layers

Six layers that work
Shawl or stole
The classic. Drape it over both shoulders with the pallu pleated underneath, or wrap it like a second pallu.
Tailored jacket or blazer
Smart for the office. Wear it open over a pleated, pinned pallu so the border still shows.
Cropped jacket
Ends at the waist, so the pleats stay visible. Festive in an embroidered finish.
Long coat
For travel and outdoor evenings. Pick a colour from the saree’s border.
Cardigan
A relaxed layer for daily wear and travel.
Cape
Elegant over a saree for weddings; it leaves the pleats free.

Drapes That Work With Layers

Four drapes for winter
Pleated, pinned palluLies flat under a jacket or coat. The best choice for office and travel.
Belted drapeA belt over the pallu or over an open cardigan holds everything in place.
Gujarati styleThe pallu falls across the front, so it shows even under an open jacket.
Shawl as a second palluDrape the shawl from the left shoulder like a pallu for a layered, festive look.

For the basic drape, read how to drape a mul cotton saree.

Footwear

Swap open sandals for closed shoes: block heel pumps or loafers for the office, embellished juttis with thin socks for festive days, and ankle boots for a modern look with a shorter hem. Set the hem with the shoes on so the length is right.

Winter Care

Linen and tissue should be dry cleaned. Mul cotton, mul modal and acrylic cotton can be hand washed in cold water and dried indoors in the shade, which takes longer in winter, so allow time. Air sarees before putting them away, store them folded in cotton with neem leaves, and keep them away from damp walls. Our guide to washing and storing sarees has the details.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • A bulky sweater under the blouse. It shows through and spoils the line; choose a thin thermal.
  • Covering every pleat with a long coat at a function. Choose a cropped jacket or shawl so the saree shows.
  • Open sandals on a cold day. Closed shoes keep you warm and look finished.
  • A thermal in a colour that shows under a sheer pallu. Choose skin tone.
  • Drying sarees on a heater. The heat can damage fibres and zari.
