Bollywood Chiffon Sarees: From Silsila to Rocky Aur Rani
By Nishita Nathani20 min read
A Bollywood chiffon saree is the light, flowing saree Hindi cinema made famous in rain songs, Swiss meadows and party scenes: usually one strong or soft colour, a fitted sleeveless or statement blouse, and a pallu left free to move. Chiffon earned that place because it does what a camera loves: it lifts in the wind, clings in the rain and softens hard studio light. This guide covers why chiffon works on film, Yash Chopra and Switzerland, ten documented chiffon moments from Silsila in 1981 to Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023 with the designers where they are on record, the famous film sarees that were not chiffon, the reality of chiffon in snow, and how to wear a look in the spirit of each era today.
Why Chiffon Works on Film
Chiffon is a sheer, light plain weave made from tightly twisted yarns. On a person standing still it is pretty; on a person moving through wind, rain and light it becomes part of the choreography. Costume designers and the actresses they dressed have explained the appeal in practical terms, and four reasons come up again and again.
Yash Chopra, Switzerland and the Chiffon Saree
Few filmmakers are as closely tied to the chiffon saree as Yash Chopra. When he died in October 2012, Bilal Qureshi’s obituary for NPR remembered his “starlets in chiffon saris, completely inappropriate for Alpine climates”, and a Deccan Herald report a few weeks earlier had noted that most of his films featured actresses in chiffon saris. No one is on record as having coined the phrase “Yash Chopra chiffon”; it grew out of the films themselves.
Switzerland became his backdrop from the mid 1980s. Faasle (1985) was his first Swiss shoot, and the mountains, meadows and lakes returned in film after film. Switzerland returned the affection with honours that are a matter of record.
The connection also explains a song that was never shot. For Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012), Manish Malhotra designed twelve saris for Katrina Kaif for a song planned in Switzerland, and one, in white, was chosen. After Yash Chopra died on 21 October 2012, before the shoot, the song was not filmed.
The look did not begin with him. Royal women are widely credited with making chiffon saris fashionable between the 1930s and the 1960s, and the V&A notes that wealthy Indian women wore French chiffon saris from the 1940s to the 1960s. That story is told in our guide to the royal chiffon saree. What cinema did was carry it from palaces and society pages to every town with a single screen.
Ten Chiffon Moments, 1981 to 2023
Many film songs feature a chiffon saree. The ten below are the ones where the fabric and the year are on record in more than one account; one of them, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, is a song that was planned but never shot. They are listed by year.
Here is what the record shows for each costume credit. Where a credit is disputed or missing, we say so rather than guess.
The Stories Behind the Moments
Silsila (1981): the long, quiet chiffon
Rekha wears chiffon sarees through Silsila; one account describes them as single, unbroken colours, and another remembers whites and reds in particular. Who designed them is disputed: some accounts say Rekha shaped her own costumes, while others credit costume designer Leena Daru with her sarees. Either way, chiffon went on to appear in many of Yash Chopra’s later films.
Mr. India (1987): blue in the rain
In the rain song Kaate Nahin Kat Te, Sridevi wears a blue chiffon saree with a blue blouse, blue bindi and blue bangles. The idea, as it was later described, was to show the chiffon clinging in the rain, and the one-colour styling makes the whole figure read as a single shape on screen. Some lists name a designer for this saree, but we could not find the credit on record, so we leave it unnamed.
Chandni (1989): the film most credited with the chiffon craze
Released on 15 September 1989, Chandni dressed Sridevi in chiffon sarees with sleeveless blouses, in a palette that was largely white and pastel, designed by Bhanu Athaiya and Leena Daru. The Indian Express wrote that the film made the chiffon sari something every Indian woman wanted in her wardrobe, and it is the film most often credited with doing so. Her yellow saree in the Swiss meadows is often recalled too, but accounts differ on whether it was chiffon or lace, and even on which song it appears in, so we simply call it a yellow saree.
Lamhe (1991): white that was not a saree
For Kabhi Main Kahoon, shot in Switzerland, Sridevi wears white. Strictly it is not a saree: designer Neeta Lulla made the dress from three to four chiffon sarees layered together, because several layers soften white under film lights.
Darr (1993): the blouse becomes the statement
Released on 24 December 1993, Darr put Juhi Chawla in solid-colour chiffon sarees with off-shoulder and halter blouses, designed by Neeta Lulla, who has confirmed the off-shoulder blouses in an interview with Film Companion. The saree stays plain; the cut of the blouse carries the look. A plain chiffon with a strong blouse is still the easiest way to wear the style.
Mohra (1994): Tip Tip Barsa Paani
Raveena Tandon wears a yellow saree with ruffled sleeves in the rain song Tip Tip Barsa Paani. Rocky S has said he designed it. One list online calls it orange; the designer and most accounts say yellow, and yellow is how it is remembered.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998): soft, single colours
In the second half of the film, Kajol wears single-colour chiffon sarees by Manish Malhotra. Accounts of the colours differ: one describes pastels such as peach, cream and mint, another remembers red. One museum account says Rani Mukerji’s chiffon saree in the same film was whipped about by the many wind machines on set.
Main Hoon Na (2004): the party chiffon
Sushmita Sen’s Miss Chandni wears chiffon sarees in red, orange and pink, with the pallu taken low across the waist and very short, strappy blouses, designed by Manish Malhotra with Sanjeev Mulchandani. Here the film chiffon is party wear rather than romance.
The 2023 Homage
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, released on 28 July 2023, brought the film chiffon back on purpose. Alia Bhatt wears chiffon sarees through the film, designed by Manish Malhotra, mostly in bright single tones. The song Tum Kya Mile was shot in snowy Kashmir, and director Karan Johar, in words reported by IANS in June 2023, described it as a love song that would pay “homage to my guru Yash Chopra”.
Around the same time, writers questioned the old trope of heroines in thin sarees in the snow. For real life, the useful part of the homage is the styling: one colour, a fitted blouse, a pallu that moves, and nothing heavy around it.
Chiffon in Snow: The Reality on Set
Chiffon in snow is one of the most recognisable and least practical images in Hindi film fashion. The people who wore it have been frank about what it was like.
Famous Film Sarees That Were Not Chiffon
Some of the most loved film sarees turn up in chiffon lists online, but the record does not support calling them chiffon. Here is what we found.
Many viewers also remember heroines of the 1960s and 1970s in chiffon, but we found no reliable record of a specific chiffon saree for them, so none is listed here. On screen, the difference between chiffon and georgette is hard to see: georgette is usually a little heavier, with a grainier surface and more body, while chiffon is lighter and more sheer. Neither word on a film tells you the fibre; a film chiffon could have been silk or polyester. When you buy, that is the question to ask, and our chiffon guide explains how.
Colour Lessons for Today
Strip away the mountains and the film chiffon comes down to colour. The looks people remember are nearly always one colour carried from saree to blouse to bindi, or a single soft shade with one quiet contrast. That is easy to borrow without copying any one scene.
Most MAYIN chiffon sarees are printed, so the tone on tone trick works by matching the blouse to the ground colour of the print. For yellow, Sun Shower is a yellow gingham pure chiffon and Eden a yellow floral and stripe; Liora is a yellow floral. For blue, Azura is a royal blue floral, Selene and Veyona are blue florals, and Slow Sunday is a blue gingham. For pink, Juliet and Elysia are pink florals and Rosy Skies a pink gingham. For peach, Camilie is a peach and orange floral and Fresh Bloom a peach and orange gingham. For a black party saree, Noxana is a black floral pure chiffon.
For red, Vintage Wine is a maroon and red floral print in hand embroidered chiffon at ₹3,499, made for an evening. If you want the classic film one-colour look, choose a saree with a smaller print and a ground that dominates; if you want a modern printed take, florals and gingham do the same job with more personality. MAYIN chiffon sarees run from ₹3,399 to ₹5,599, and every one comes with a 1 m crepe blouse piece.
Blouse Cuts and Pallu Styles
In film after film the saree stays simple and the blouse does the talking. Every MAYIN chiffon saree comes with a 1 m crepe blouse piece, which is opaque enough to wear under sheer chiffon. A 1 m blouse piece covers most short and elbow sleeve designs; full sleeves often need more unless you are a smaller size, so show your tailor the piece first.

Practical Notes: Rain, Stairs and Sheer Fabric
Film chiffon only has to survive a take. Yours has to last an evening, so a few things are worth knowing before you plan a monsoon party or a dance floor around it.
All MAYIN chiffon sarees are dry clean only. For petticoat colours and what else to wear underneath, see what to wear under a saree.

Questions People Ask
Which Bollywood film made chiffon sarees popular?
Chandni (1989) is the film most often credited: Sridevi wore white and pastel chiffons with sleeveless blouses, designed by Bhanu Athaiya and Leena Daru. Silsila (1981) and Yash Chopra’s other films had already put chiffon on screen.
Why is the chiffon saree linked to Yash Chopra and Switzerland?
Many of his films dressed the heroine in chiffon, and from Faasle (1985) onwards he shot in Switzerland again and again. Interlaken later made him an ambassador and unveiled his statue in 2016.
Why do Bollywood heroines wear chiffon sarees in snow?
Because chiffon moves, catches the light and photographs as one clean colour, which is what a song needs. Some actresses have since spoken about how cold it was; a scene lasts minutes, a winter evening does not.
Which colour saree did Raveena Tandon wear in Tip Tip Barsa Paani?
Yellow, with ruffled sleeves, in Mohra (1994). One list online calls it orange, but the designer, Rocky S, and most accounts say yellow.
What colour was Sridevi’s saree in the Mr. India rain song?
Blue. In Kaate Nahin Kat Te she wears a blue chiffon saree with a blue blouse, bindi and bangles.
Was Sridevi’s yellow saree in Chandni chiffon?
Accounts differ: some say chiffon, others lace. Her chiffon sarees in the film, largely white and pastel, are well documented.
What saree did Alia Bhatt wear in Tum Kya Mile?
Chiffon sarees designed by Manish Malhotra, for a song shot in Kashmir that Karan Johar called a homage to Yash Chopra.
What saree did Sushmita Sen wear in Main Hoon Na?
Chiffon sarees in red, orange and pink, with a low pallu and short, strappy blouses, designed by Manish Malhotra with Sanjeev Mulchandani.
Chiffon or georgette: which is the Bollywood saree?
Both appear on screen and are hard to tell apart on film. Chiffon is lighter and more sheer; georgette is usually a little heavier, with a grainier surface.
Which blouse goes with a plain chiffon saree?
A fitted blouse in the saree’s own colour for a tone on tone line, or a bold cut such as sleeveless, halter or off-shoulder. MAYIN chiffon sarees come with a 1 m crepe blouse piece.
Is a chiffon saree good for a party or a wedding?
Yes. It is light enough to dance in, and a floral or a deep ground with a sleeveless or halter blouse suits a sangeet, cocktail or reception. Keep heavier sarees for the main wedding rituals if your family prefers.
