What to Wear Under a Saree, With or Without a Petticoat

Dusty Rose orange and peach mul modal cotton saree by MAYIN

Under a saree you wear three things: a bra (or a blouse with cups sewn in), underwear, and a petticoat that the saree is tucked into. A cotton petticoat is still the best base for almost every saree, but for a casual outing in an opaque saree, a fitted skirt, tuckable shapewear or leggings with a firm waistband can stand in for it. Under sheer chiffon there is no substitute: always a petticoat. This guide compares each layer, ranks our fabrics for a no-petticoat drape, shows the drape itself, and covers bras, underwear and special cases.

The Layers Under a Saree

A saree is one long piece of cloth, so its shape comes from underneath. Below the waist it needs a waistband firm enough to hold five to seven pleats and the weight of the pallu for hours. For most people that is a petticoat, and our saree petticoat guide covers its colour chart, cuts, size chart and how to tie it. This guide covers everything else.

What goes where
BraChosen by the blouse neckline and back. A blouse with sewn-in cups replaces a structured bra.
UnderwearSeamless and close to your skin tone under fitted layers; under a cotton A-line, almost anything works.
PetticoatThe anchor. It holds the tuck and the pleats, and under a light saree it is part of what people see.
Or a stand-inA fitted skirt, tuckable shapewear, or leggings with a firm waistband, for opaque sarees and short outings.
ShapewearOptional. Some kinds replace the petticoat; others go under it. Under sheer chiffon, always under it.
Slip or camisoleOptional. A thin extra layer under a sheer blouse or a very light saree, without adding a colour.

Get ready in this order. Do your hair first, so you do not crush the pleats or pallu later. Then the bra and blouse, underwear and any shapewear, and the petticoat or its stand-in at the height the saree will sit. Put on your footwear before you drape, since it decides where the hem falls. The pins go in as you drape, and jewellery comes last.

Petticoat and Its Alternatives Compared

Cotton petticoatA drawstring waist the tuck and pleats grip firmly; covers from waist to ankleEvery MAYIN saree and every occasion. Breathes in heat. Match the colour under light sarees
Tuckable saree shapewearA firm waistband to tuck into; a stretch skirt, often flared from the kneeA smooth line under mul modal for a few hours. Warmer, grips less, so pin well. Never alone under sheer chiffon
Fitted skirtA firm or wide waistband; ankle length, ideally in the saree colourThe closest stand-in for a petticoat under an opaque saree. A thin elastic waist lets the tuck slip
LeggingsOnly as good as the waistband: a wide, firm one holds; thin elastic does notA casual drape over an opaque saree. Ankle length in the saree colour, or the hem gives it away
Cycling shortsA wide waistband, but they stop at the thighBest as an extra layer under a petticoat to stop thighs rubbing. Alone, the pleats can open on bare legs

For a puja, a wedding or any long day on your feet, we would keep the petticoat. The stand-ins are for a short outing in a saree that does not show what is under it.

Which Sarees Can Go Without a Petticoat

Whether you can skip the petticoat depends first on the fabric, then on the colour. The sheerer the weave, the more the layer underneath shows through as a shadow.

Our fabrics, ranked for a no-petticoat drape
MAYIN fabricWithout a petticoat?In practice
Pure handloom linenYes, for a casual outingThe most opaque fabric we make, and crisp enough to hold a tuck in a fitted skirt. Corner Office and Crosswalk are easy choices. For a festive day in a zari border saree such as Main Event, keep the petticoat
Acrylic cottonYes, for a casual outingUrban Tide is a multicolour colourblock, so a near colour underneath is enough
Cotton tissue and linen tissueRarely: keep the petticoat for zari tissueTissue is crisp but semi-sheer, and ours carry zari. Silver and Miss Earth are festive sarees, so keep a petticoat matched to the saree or its zari tone
Mul modalOnly over a full-length matched layerA little less sheer than mul cotton. A fitted ankle-length skirt or tuckable shapewear in the saree colour, never leggings alone: Dot Theory, True Garnet, Cocoa
Dark or busy mul cottonOnly over a full-length matched layerA dark ground or a busy print hides more: After Dark in black, Spot On in black and grey polka dots, Poppy Seed in red gingham. Still slightly sheer, so test it
Light or white mul cottonNoLight mul cotton shows every edge and colour beneath it. Bright Side in white wants a white petticoat matched to its white
Pure chiffon and chiffonNo, neverAlways a petticoat, matched to the saree or nude if there is no match: Juliet, Noxana, Frangipani
Dhakai jamdaniNo, neverThe sheerest weave we make, with an open muslin ground. Naples needs a petticoat matched exactly
Good to know
Under sheer chiffon, always wear a petticoat, matched to the saree or nude if there is no match. Shapewear alone shows through sheer chiffon; if you want shaping, wear it under the petticoat. The same goes for jamdani. Zari and embroidered festive sarees also need a petticoat: their weight needs a firm tuck.

Colour matters as much as fabric

A dark ground hides what is beneath it; a light one shows it. In the same fabric, a black or maroon saree gives you far more freedom than a white or pastel one.

The Light Test Before You Leave

Indoor light hides a lot; daylight and movement find it. Do this once with any new combination of saree and layer.

Five checks, about two minutes
1
Hold a single layer up to daylightHold the saree up to a window with your hand behind it. If you can see your hand clearly, the layer underneath will show.
2
Stand with the light behind youDrape fully, then stand with a bright window behind you and look in a mirror, or ask someone to look.
3
Walk and watch the pleatsTake a few long steps. The pleats open as you walk, and whatever is underneath shows in that gap: a leggings ankle, the edge of cycling shorts, a contrasting hem.
4
Check the hemWhatever you wear underneath must end above the saree hem, or be in the saree colour. A light leggings hem under a dark saree is the most common give-away.
5
Sit, stand and climb a stepThe tuck should stay put and the waistband should not roll; if it does, it is too soft to hold a saree.

How to Drape a Saree Without a Petticoat

The drape is the same as usual. What changes is the base: everything depends on a waistband firm enough to grip the tuck. A thin elastic waist, like most leggings have, lets the pleats slide out.

Step by step, over a fitted skirt or shapewear
1
Choose the baseA fitted ankle-length skirt or tuckable shapewear with a firm or wide waistband, in the saree colour. Leggings only if the waistband is wide and firm, and only under an opaque saree.
2
Put the base on, then your footwearPut the base on at the height you want the saree to sit, snug, not tight: you should be able to slide one finger under the waistband. Then put on the footwear you will wear, since it decides where the hem falls.
3
Tuck the first round deepTuck a few centimetres of the upper edge inside the waistband, not just the edge of the fabric, and take it once round, with the hem anywhere from just grazing the floor to just above it.
4
Fold and pin the pleatsFold five to seven pleats, slip one pin through the pleats only, from the inside, to hold them together, then tuck them in at the navel, facing left.
5
Add the second pleat pinOptional with a petticoat, essential without one: a second pin from the inside that catches the pleats to the waistband of your skirt or shapewear.
6
Take the rest round and upWrap the remaining length round your back and across the front, then pleat or fold the pallu and pin it through the folds into the blouse at the shoulder.
7
Pin the left waistPin the upper edge of the drape into the waistband just behind your left hip, so the pallu’s weight does not drag the front down.
8
Run the light testWalk, sit and check the hem in daylight before you go.

Because the base grips less than cotton, use the secure set of pins from our guide on how to pin a saree. A belt worn over the drape can hold the pallu neatly at the waist, but it does nothing for the tuck, so still pin; see our saree belt guide. If you want a saree with no tucking at all, our guide to pre-draped and ready-to-wear sarees explains how those work, and the same fabric rules apply to what goes beneath them.

Fitted Skirts, Leggings, Shorts and Trousers

The stand-ins, one by one
Fitted skirt
Black, maroon
The best stand-in. A straight or slightly flared skirt in cotton or a cotton blend, ankle length, with a firm waistband or a wide band of elastic. Buy it in the colours you wear most: black and maroon cover a lot of dark sarees.
Leggings
Black, navy
Only with a wide, firm waistband, only under an opaque saree, and only ankle length in the saree colour. They cling, so the saree falls closer to the leg than over a petticoat.
Cycling shorts
Nude, black
Their real job is stopping your thighs rubbing on a hot day. Wear them under a petticoat or skirt; alone, they leave bare legs where the pleats open.
Tuckable shapewear
Nude, black
A stretch skirt with a firm waistband. A sleek line under mul modal for an evening. Choose it close to your skin tone if it might show, and pin the pleats well.

Palazzos, dhoti pants, jeans, straight trousers and leggings worn to show make a fusion drape rather than a substitute: the saree is tucked into the waistband and the trousers are part of the look. Under sheer chiffon, choose only an opaque bottom in a matched or nude tone; otherwise wear a petticoat. Our guide to indo-western saree looks covers those, including a dhoti-style drape, and saree draping styles has more drapes to try.

Shapewear Under a Saree

Saree shapewear is a stretch skirt, usually flared from the knee, that smooths the hip and thigh. Some saree shapewear has a firm waistband you can tuck into and can replace the petticoat; others are worn under one, so check before you buy. It smooths the line; it does not change your measurements.

Pure chiffon and chiffonOnly under a petticoatLight shapewear first, then a matched petticoat over it. Alone, it shows through
Linen and tissueRarely neededCrisp fabrics stand away from the body; they need a firm tuck more than smoothing

Size it by the fullest part of your hips, using that brand’s own chart; too small, and it rolls at the waist and rides up when you sit. Cotton-rich shapewear breathes better, while more stretch smooths more but feels warmer. Some people find long hours in firm shapewear uncomfortable, from a tingling thigh to putting off trips to the washroom, so wear it for hours rather than all day, and take it off if you feel tingling or numbness. Try it at home for an hour first. If line and shape are what you are after, how to look slim in a saree has drape and colour ideas.

Which Bra to Wear With a Saree Blouse

The blouse decides the bra. Start with the neckline and the back, and take the bra you plan to wear to the blouse fitting, since a tailor cuts the armhole and shoulder around it.

Bra by blouse
BlouseBraWhy
Everyday fitted blouseSeamless T-shirt braSmooth under a close fit; no lace texture showing through
Padded blouseNone neededSewn-in cups replace a structured bra
Sheer or light blouseSoft cups, or none if paddedMoulded cups can show as an outline under sheer fabric
SleevelessRegular bra with straps set close to the neck, or a convertible in racerbackA close-cut armhole usually hides a narrow strap; with a wide cut, a racerback or convertible usually works better. Try it at the fitting
Boat neckT-shirt bra with straps set close to the neckThe neckline sits wide on the shoulder, so straps at the edge peep out
Deep V or sweetheartPlunge or balconetteThe centre of the bra sits low enough to stay hidden
Off-shoulder or halterStrapless for off-shoulder; a multiway worn as a halter for a halter neckBetter than removing the straps from an ordinary bra, which is not built to stay up without them
Deep backLow-back braThe band sits below the blouse opening
BacklessStick-on cupsPatch test the adhesive on your inner arm the day before if your skin is sensitive

Colour and fit

Under light blouses, a bra close to your own skin tone shows least; white shows more than you would expect. Under dark blouses, black or a deep shade is the safer choice. With a fuller bust, some people find a minimiser bra helps the pallu fall evenly across the front. On a sleeveless blouse with no shoulder seam, the shoulder pin can go through the pallu folds into the blouse strap or your bra strap from underneath, and some people ask their tailor for a small hidden loop inside the shoulder to pin into, as our pins guide explains.

For neckline ideas see saree blouse neck designs, and if you prefer a ready blouse, see our readymade stitched blouse guide.

Underwear Lines and Colours

A loose cotton A-line petticoat hides almost any line; anything that hugs the hip shows every edge.

Where lines show
Layer over itDo lines show?Choose
Cotton A-line petticoatRarelyWhatever is comfortable; cotton breathes best
Mermaid or stretch petticoatOften, at the hipSeamless or laser-cut briefs
Shapewear or a fitted skirtYesSeamless, or a high-waist brief that ends under the waistband

Colour follows the saree. Under light sarees and light petticoats, choose a shade close to your skin tone; under black or very dark sarees, black. For the petticoat itself, see the colour chart in our petticoat guide.

Summer, Winter, Pregnancy and Plus Size

Summer

Cotton next to the skin is usually the most comfortable choice in heat: a cotton petticoat breathes better than stretch fabrics or synthetics, and mul cotton such as the gingham Poppy Seed or the striped Saturday is light and breathable. If your thighs rub on a hot day, many people find thin cycling shorts under the petticoat help. Keep shapewear for evenings. Browse our summer sarees.

Winter

In most of North India, winter usually calls for mul modal in deeper colours, such as Cocoa or Dot Theory, and layers: thermal leggings close to the petticoat colour, ending above the saree hem, under the petticoat keep your legs warm without changing the drape. More ideas in our winter saree looks.

Long days, and why snug beats tight

Whatever you tuck into, keep the waistband snug, not tight, with room for one finger beneath it, and move the tie point now and then. A 2024 medical case report described two older women with long-lasting skin ulcers at the waist after years of tightly tied waistbands, and one of them wore her saree tied directly on the skin, without an underskirt. Two cases cannot show cause, but going without a petticoat does not remove the pressure of a tight tie; the waistband simply moves to another layer.

Pregnancy

Wear a soft waistband above or below the bump, wherever it is comfortable, and ask your doctor before wearing anything firm around the waist; our guide to a saree for a baby shower and pregnancy covers drapes, pins and fabrics.

Plus size

Every MAYIN saree is 5.5 m long and 45 inches wide. Choose any base by your waist and hip measurements rather than the label, with a wide, firm waistband that holds the tuck better than a thin cord. Thin shorts under the petticoat help with chafing on long days, and a supportive bra fitted under the blouse helps the pallu sit evenly. For drape and fabric ideas, see how to choose a saree for your body type.

Questions People Ask

What should I wear under a saree?

A bra chosen for your blouse, underwear, and a petticoat tied snugly at the height the saree sits. Shapewear is optional, and under some sarees a fitted skirt can replace the petticoat.

Can I wear a saree without a petticoat?

Yes, for a casual outing in an opaque saree such as handloom linen, over a fitted skirt or tuckable shapewear with a firm waistband. Never with sheer chiffon or jamdani, and keep the petticoat for pujas, weddings and long days.

What can I wear under a saree instead of a petticoat?

An ankle-length fitted skirt with a firm waistband is the best stand-in. Tuckable shapewear and firm-waisted leggings also work under opaque sarees, in the saree colour.

Will the saree stay in place without a petticoat?

It will if the waistband is firm enough to grip the tuck. Add a second pin from the inside that catches the pleats to the waistband, and pin the left waist.

Can I wear leggings under a saree?

Only ankle-length leggings with a wide, firm waistband, in the saree colour, under an opaque saree. Thin elastic lets the tuck slip, and a contrasting hem shows when the pleats open.

Can I wear saree shapewear instead of a petticoat?

If it has a firm waistband you can tuck into, yes, under an opaque saree, or under mul modal in the saree colour or close to your skin tone, for a few hours. Under sheer chiffon, wear it beneath a petticoat.

What should I wear under a sheer saree?

A petticoat matched to the saree, or nude if there is no match. Shapewear alone shows through sheer chiffon, so any shaping goes under the petticoat.

Do you wear a bra under a saree blouse?

Yes, unless the blouse has sewn-in cups. Choose it by the neckline and back: a T-shirt bra for everyday blouses, strapless or stick-on for off-shoulder and backless ones.

Which bra should I wear with a backless or deep-back blouse?

Stick-on cups for a backless blouse and a low-back bra for a deep back. Patch test the adhesive first if your skin is sensitive.

Should I remove my bra straps or wear a strapless bra?

Wear a strapless or multiway bra. An ordinary bra is not built to be worn without straps, so it tends to slip and support less.
