Mul Cotton vs Mul Modal Saree: Which Should You Buy?
By Nishita Nathani7 min read
Mul cotton is a pure, very fine, loosely woven cotton that is the lightest and most breathable saree fabric you can buy. Mul modal is mulmul cotton blended with modal, a smooth fibre made from beech wood cellulose, which gives the saree a silkier hand, a little more drape, less sheerness and fewer creases. Choose mul cotton for the hottest days, the softest feel and the easiest home wash; choose mul modal when you want a smoother fall, a little more coverage and a saree that comes out of the cupboard ready to wear. Both start under Rs 2,000. This guide compares the two on fibre, feel, weight, sheerness, creasing, drape, colour, blouse piece, care and price, and tells you which one to pick for each occasion.
What Each Fabric Is

Side by Side
Feel and Drape

Mul cotton feels like air. It is so light that the pallu lifts in a breeze, and the pleats sit loosely rather than sharply. After Dark, Twilight Bloom and Vanilla Mousse are plain mul cotton sarees that show the fabric at its simplest.

Mul modal feels smoother and cooler to the touch, with a soft sheen in the light. The fall is closer to the body and the pleats stay neater through the day. Mauve Melody, True Garnet and Cocoa are plain mul modal sarees in colours that look deeper than they would in plain cotton.
Sheerness
Creasing and Ironing
If you dislike ironing or travel a lot with sarees, mul modal saves time. If you like the slightly crumpled, lived in look of fine cotton, that is part of mul cotton’s charm.
How Colour Takes
Cotton gives a soft, matte colour, which is why pastels and white look so fresh in mul cotton. Modal absorbs dye deeply and reflects a little light, so jewel and earth tones look richer: True Garnet in maroon, Cocoa in brown and Amber in yellow.
Blouse Piece
For blouse ideas see blouse designs for plain cotton sarees and the blouse colour guide.
Care
Both are washed the same way: a gentle hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, no wringing, dried in the shade. Mul cotton may release a little colour in the first wash, so wash it separately at first. Iron mul cotton on medium while damp; mul modal needs a low to medium iron and often none at all. Neither should go in a hot dryer. Full steps in our guide to washing and storing sarees.
Which One When

Prints behave differently too. Polka dots on mul modal, such as Moonlit Pearl, Vintage Speckle and Dot Theory, sit crisp and clear on the smoother surface. Stripes and ginghams on mul cotton, such as Tokyo, have a softer, handloom feel.

Questions People Ask
What is the difference between mul cotton and mul modal?
Mul cotton is pure fine cotton, the lightest and most breathable. Mul modal blends that cotton with modal, a beech wood cellulose fibre, for a smoother hand, less sheerness and fewer creases.
Is modal cotton good for sarees?
Yes. It drapes smoothly, holds colour well, creases less and still breathes, which makes it a strong daily wear and travel fabric.
Is modal a natural fabric?
Modal is made from natural beech wood cellulose through a manufacturing process, so it is a regenerated cellulose fibre: plant based, soft and absorbent, but not a raw natural fibre like cotton.
Which is cooler, mul cotton or mul modal?
Mul cotton, by a little. Both are cool; mul cotton has the loosest weave and the most airflow.
Which is more see-through?
Mul cotton is slightly sheer, especially in pale colours. Mul modal has more coverage.
Which creases less?
Mul modal, by a lot. It can often be worn without ironing.
Does a mul modal saree come with a blouse piece?
Yes, MAYIN mul modal sarees come with a 1 m running blouse piece in the same fabric. Plain mul cotton sarees do not.
How do I wash mul modal?
Exactly like mul cotton: gentle cold hand wash, no wringing, shade dry, low to medium iron if needed.
Which is better for a first saree?
Either. Mul cotton if you want the lightest fabric at the lowest price; mul modal if you want less ironing and more coverage.
How much do they cost?
Plain mul cotton starts at Rs 1,699 and plain mul modal at Rs 1,899 at MAYIN.
