Raksha Bandhan Saree Guide: What to Wear for Rakhi

Sunlit Rose yellow floral print pure chiffon saree by MAYIN

The best saree for Raksha Bandhan is a light, bright one you can sit on the floor in, hold a thali in, cook in and hug in: mul cotton or mul modal for a humid day at home, a printed pure chiffon if you are travelling or want a dressier look for photos, and a zari stripe when you want a little shine without weight. In most years Rakhi falls inside the monsoon across much of India, so the fabric, the hem and the pins matter as much as the colour. Below: the day itself, fabrics for humid weather, colours, leheriya, looks for the sister, the travelling sister and the bhabhi, a monsoon plan, finishing touches and gifting.

How the Day Usually Goes

Raksha Bandhan falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the month of Shravan. At its heart, a sister ties a rakhi on her brother’s wrist, they share sweets, and he gives her a gift, often money. In many families the sister first prepares a thali with roli or kumkum, rice, a diya and sweets, applies a tilak and performs a small aarti before tying the rakhi. Many families also tie the rakhi only in an auspicious window and avoid the period called Bhadra, so check the timing with your elders or the family panchang.

Customs vary widely. Rakhis are tied for cousins, close friends and others treated as family, especially in north and western India. On the Konkan coast the same full moon is Narali Purnima, when coconuts are offered to the sea, and other regions have their own observances. What most homes share is a long, relaxed day: a morning ritual, a big lunch, visits, and often a dinner out. Dress for all of it, not just the ten minutes at the thali.

Monsoon Weather and the Right Fabric

In most years Rakhi comes while the south-west monsoon is still active over much of India, though rainfall varies a great deal by year and region. In much of north India that usually means warm, humid air, sudden showers and wet roads. A heavy saree that feels lovely in winter can feel like a blanket by lunchtime.

That is why mul cotton is the easiest Rakhi saree: fine, open and breathable, and washable at home with a gentle cold hand wash unless it has zari or embroidery. Lemonade in plain yellow and Harvest Sun, a yellow gingham, are both mul cotton. Mul modal, such as True Garnet in maroon red and Mauve Melody in pink, is breathable with a soft sheen and a more fluid fall, creases very little and comes with a 1 m running blouse piece. For the difference, see mul cotton vs mul modal.

Best fitAlso works Mul cotton and mul modal without zari or embroidery take a gentle cold hand wash; zari, embroidered, chiffon, linen, tissue and jamdani are dry clean only.

Printed pure chiffon is the dressier choice that still feels light. Every MAYIN pure chiffon is 100% Bemberg and folds into very little space for travel: Sunlit Rose and Liora in yellow florals, Elysia in pink. It is sheer, so wear a petticoat matched to the saree, or nude if you have no match, and keep it for days when you will be indoors or travelling door to door, since it is dry clean only. Handloom linen, cotton tissue and jamdani look festive but are dry clean only, and linen is a medium weight, heavier than mul, so save them for a dry day or an evening indoors. Lightweight sarees for daily wear compares fabric weights.

Colours: Popular, Not Prescribed

There is no single colour fixed by tradition for Rakhi, and customs differ from family to family. What is true is that many families like bright festive colours on the day, and that red, yellow, pink, green and orange are popular choices. Treat the list below as practical suggestions, chosen for how they look in daylight and photos and how they cope with roli and rain.

Red and maroon
Red, maroon
Deep red and maroon hide a stray roli mark or a damp patch better than pastels. Manjari has red zari stripes and Crimson Charm has hand block printed polka dots. For the evening, Vintage Wine is a hand embroidered chiffon in maroon red.
Green
Green, gold
The colour of the season, and lovely against a red rakhi. Emerald is green mul cotton with zari stripes, Pink Guava is green with a pink border, and Zyra and Orelia are green florals in pure chiffon.
Orange
Orange, gold
Warm and very photogenic in soft light. Vintage Orange is a hand embroidered chiffon for a dressier dinner. For daytime, Elara is an orange floral print in pure chiffon.
White with colour
White, red
Devi is white mul cotton with gold and red detailing: crisp for a morning puja, and the red keeps it festive. Keep the thali to one side on a pale saree.

Can you wear black? No fixed rule bans it, but many families prefer brighter colours on festival days, so if you are visiting, follow the house. For photos, contrast with your brother rather than matching him: if he is in white or cream, anything works; if he wears yellow, then pink, green or maroon all sit well beside it. For blouse colours, see blouse for a yellow saree and blouse for a pink saree.

Leheriya and Rakhi

Leheriya, from lehar, the word for a wave, is a wrap-resist tie-dye from Rajasthan. The cloth is rolled on the diagonal, tied at intervals and dyed, often in several rounds, which leaves rippling diagonal stripes. Rolled the other way and dyed again, the crossing pattern is called mothra. Leheriya belongs to the monsoon in Rajasthan and is closely tied to Teej, which falls in the same rainy season.

Rakhi itself does not ask for any particular print or colour. If you love leheriya, wear it because it suits the season and your mood, not because the day asks for it. Our Teej saree guide covers leheriya and green for Teej in more depth.

To be clear about ours: Rouge Waves is a pink leheriya print on pure chiffon. The waves are printed, not tied and dyed, and there is no gota edging. It gives you the monsoon mood of leheriya in a saree that is light enough for a humid lunch and folds small enough for a suitcase. See more Teej sarees for the season.

Looks for the Sister Tying the Rakhi

The few minutes at the thali are when a saree is tested most: you are holding a plate with roli and a lit diya, leaning towards your brother, then bending to touch an elder’s feet or sitting cross-legged on the floor. A few small choices make all of it easy.

At the thali
Pin the palluPleat it and pin it at the shoulder, then pin the pallu pleats, so it cannot swing towards the diya during aarti or slip in a hug.
Mind the sleevesShort or elbow sleeves that fit close stay clear of the roli and the flame. Wide bell sleeves can dip into the thali.
Keep the tying hand lightOne ring at most on the hand that ties the knot; claw settings catch the rakhi thread.
Sitting on the floorLift the pleats slightly as you sit so they fan out rather than pull. Soft mul cotton and mul modal are the most forgiving.
Roli and haldiOn a pale saree, hold the thali to your side, not in front, and keep haldi fingers clear of the pallu.

For the evening, change to statement earrings and, on a pure chiffon, let the pallu fall open, pinned at the shoulder and the back. How to pin a saree shows exactly where each pin goes.

Travelling to Your Brother’s Home

In many families, especially in north India, married women go back to their parents’ or brother’s home for Rakhi, and in some the brother comes to fetch his sister. That often means a train, a long drive or a flight in humid weather. You can travel in the saree or carry it and drape on arrival; for a long, hot journey, the second is usually more comfortable.

Packing a Rakhi saree
FabricPack itOn arrival
Mul cottonRoll it rather than fold it. It creases a little but relaxes quickly once worn.Hang it while you freshen up; press at medium heat if needed.
Mul modalRoll it. It creases very little.Usually ready to wear straight from the bag.
Pure chiffon and chiffonFolds into very little space; keep it away from anything damp.Hang it for a while. If it needs it, press dry on the lowest heat through a cloth; skip steam.
Handloom linenFold it loosely and pack it on top. Linen creases, and that is part of its character.Press before you drape, or enjoy the lived-in look.
Tissue and zari stripesFold loosely with a soft cloth between the layers, avoiding sharp folds through the zari.Hang it so the folds soften before you drape.

If you plan to drape on arrival, pre-pleat the night before: fold five to seven pleats and slip one pin through the pleats only, so they tuck in as one bundle at the navel, facing left. Pre-pleating suits zari, tissue and embroidered sarees too, because nothing is sewn.

Your Rakhi travel bag
A petticoat matched to the saree; under light chiffon with no match, nude usually shows less than white.
Your stitched blouse, ironed and folded on top.
Five or six safety pins in two sizes for a long day, plus two or three spares.
Flats that can get wet, and something dressier for the evening if you want it.
A zip bag and a small towel, in case the saree meets the rain.
The rakhis, and the roli and sweets if you are bringing the thali items yourself.

For the Bhabhi, Daughters and Young Girls

When the daughters of the house come home, the brother’s wife is often the host: cooking, serving, greeting guests and still in the photos. In some Marwari and other families, the sister also ties a lumba rakhi for her bhabhi, a hanging rakhi fastened to her bangle, tied as a pair with her brother’s rakhi. If that happens in your home, wear bangles and short or elbow sleeves so the lumba hangs freely and shows.

Mauve Melody in pink mul modal creases very little, washes at home and comes with a 1 m running blouse piece. Pin a pleated pallu, or tuck its end in at the waist while you are in the kitchen.
A festive print

Vintage Speckle, pink polka dots block printed on mul modal, looks dressed up but handles a busy kitchen, and the print hides small splashes.

Maroon, gold
Main Event, maroon red handloom linen with a zari border, feels special and holds its shape; keep it for indoors if it is raining. For the evening, Vintage Wine is the softer option. More ideas in daily wear sarees for a new bride.

To coordinate with your sister-in-law without matching, choose colours that sit well together rather than the same one, such as her pink and your green, or let one of you wear a print and the other a plain. It looks intended in photos without looking like a uniform.

Daughters and young girls

For a teenager wearing one of her first sarees, a light mul cotton such as Dusty Petal or Pink Guava is easy to drape, forgiving to sit in and washable if sweets meet the pleats. Pin generously, keep the hem just off the floor, and let her choose the colour. If she would rather not pleat on the day, pre-pleat a light mul cotton for her the night before, or read our pre-draped saree guide on how ready-to-wear styles work, and sarees for young women and girls.

A Monsoon Plan: Hem, Pins, Footwear and Care

In the rain, the hem suffers first. Wear your footwear while you drape and set the hem a little higher than usual, around the ankle bone, by tucking a touch deeper at the waist. Choose shoes that can get wet and grip on a wet floor; footwear for a saree has monsoon picks.

Rain rules for a Rakhi saree
Do
✓Set the hem around the ankle bone for a rainy day.
✓Pin the pleats and the pallu, so a gust or a dash to the car does not undo the drape.
✓Pick a darker colour or a print for a day out in the rain; splashes show less.
✓Keep chiffon, zari, linen, tissue and jamdani for door-to-door days and indoor evenings.
Avoid
✕A hem that grazes the floor on wet streets.
✕Dry clean only sarees on a two-wheeler or a rainy walk.
✕Pale, sheer sarees if you expect to get caught in a shower.
✕Folding a damp saree away at the end of the day.
After a rainy Rakhi
1
Let it dry firstHang a wet saree indoors in the shade, spread out where air moves, not bunched in a bag.
2
Brush off mud once dryWet mud smears; dry mud usually brushes away from the hem.
3
Mul cotton and mul modal without zari or embroideryGive it a gentle cold hand wash, press the water out without wringing, and dry in the shade.
4
Everything elseZari, embroidered, hand painted, chiffon, linen, tissue and jamdani sarees go to the dry cleaner. Tell them what the mark is.
5
Store it bone dryA saree put away damp in humid weather can develop mildew. Keep it in a cotton bag, not plastic.

For the full method by fabric, read how to wash and store sarees.

Blouse, Jewellery, Hair and Mehendi

MAYIN mul cotton sarees come without a blouse piece, so any contrast works. Mul modal sarees have a 1 m running blouse piece, our chiffon sarees a 1 m crepe blouse piece, and linen a 1 m blouse piece. A 1 m blouse piece covers most short and elbow sleeve designs; full sleeves often need more unless you are a smaller size, so show your tailor the piece first.

Finishing touches
JewelleryEarrings that do not catch the pallu or your hair, a few bangles, one ring. Follow the zari where there is some; with plain yellow, antique gold or oxidised silver usually reads better than bright yellow gold.
HairDo your hair before you drape. A braid or low bun holds better than open hair on a humid day.
MehendiMany people apply it the evening before. Let it dry fully and scrape it off before you dress, as wet paste can mark a pale saree.
Day to eveningSwap studs for jhumkas or chandbalis, add a bolder lip, and change flats for heels if you want.

Gifting a Saree to Your Sister

A brother’s gift is often money, but a saree is a classic Rakhi present, from a brother, a sister or a bhabhi. It needs no size: every MAYIN saree is 5.5 m long and 45 inches wide, and any blouse piece is extra. Look at what she already wears. If she lives in sarees every day, choose mul cotton or mul modal; if she keeps them for occasions, a printed pure chiffon or a linen with a zari border. Add a note on care: a gentle cold hand wash for mul cotton and mul modal without zari or embroidery, and dry clean for the rest.

Questions People Ask

What should I wear on Raksha Bandhan?

A light, bright saree you can sit, cook and travel in: mul cotton or mul modal for a humid day at home, or a printed pure chiffon for a dressier lunch. Pin the pallu for the thali.

Which colour saree is best for Raksha Bandhan, and is any colour auspicious?

No single colour is fixed by tradition, and customs vary by family. Yellow, pink, red, green and orange are popular festive choices; follow your elders if they have a preference.

Which fabric is most comfortable for a Rakhi saree?

Mul cotton and mul modal. Both are light and breathable in monsoon humidity, and the plain, printed and gingham ones can be hand washed in cold water at home; zari and embroidered ones are dry clean.

What should a bhabhi wear on Raksha Bandhan?

Something festive that works for hosting, such as a mul modal or a printed mul cotton with a pinned pallu. If she receives a lumba rakhi, bangles and short sleeves let it show.

What jewellery should I wear for the rakhi ceremony?

Earrings that do not catch, a few bangles and no more than one ring on the hand that ties the rakhi. Save statement pieces for the evening.

Should brothers and sisters match outfits for Rakhi photos?

Contrast usually photographs better than matching. If he wears yellow, then pink, green or maroon all sit well beside it.

Can I wear black on Raksha Bandhan?

There is no fixed rule against it, but many families prefer brighter colours on festival days. If you are visiting, follow the house.

Can I wear the same saree for Teej and Rakhi?

Yes. Both usually fall in the monsoon, so a light green, yellow or leheriya print saree works for either; change the blouse and jewellery for a fresh look.

How do I keep my saree safe in the rain?

Set the hem around the ankle bone, wear shoes that can get wet, pin the pleats and pallu, and choose a washable mul cotton or mul modal if you will be outdoors. Dry it fully in the shade before storing.

Is a saree a good Rakhi gift for a sister?

Yes. It needs no size, and you can choose by the fabrics and colours she already wears. Add a care note; MAYIN exchanges within 7 days if the colour is not right.
