Haldi Saree Guide: What to Wear for a Haldi Ceremony

Liora yellow floral print pure chiffon saree by MAYIN for a haldi ceremony

For a haldi ceremony, wear yellow: lemon, mustard, marigold or gold, in a light cotton saree you can wash. If you are the bride or close family and will be smeared with turmeric paste, choose mul cotton or mul modal and treat the saree as one that may keep a mark. If you are a guest sitting away from the paste, a printed chiffon, a jamdani or a linen with a zari border photographs beautifully. Peach, coral, mint, pink and white with a yellow border all work too. This guide covers what the ceremony is called across India, who wears what, colours, fabrics, how turmeric behaves on cloth, how to get it out, blouses, flower jewellery and the questions people ask.

Haldi Across India

Almost every Indian wedding has a turmeric ritual, held a day or a few days before the wedding. Family members apply a paste of turmeric, gram flour, oil or rose water to the bride and groom for a glow, for blessing and to ward off the evil eye. The name and the details change from region to region.

One ritual, many names
NameWhereWhat happens
HaldiNorth and Central India, and widely todayTurmeric paste applied by family; music, flowers and a lot of yellow.
MayianPunjabi weddingsVatna of turmeric, flour and oil is applied over a few days before the wedding; the bride traditionally wore old clothes for it.
PithiGujarati and Marwari weddingsPithi paste of turmeric and gram flour, often with rose water, applied by married women of the family.
Gaye HoludBengali weddingsTurmeric is first touched to the groom, then carried with gifts to the bride’s home for her ceremony.
Mangala SnanamSouth Indian weddingsAn auspicious bath with turmeric and oil on the wedding morning or the day before.

Wherever you are, the dress logic is the same: something light enough for a hot morning, colourful enough for the photos, and washable if the paste reaches you.

Colours That Work

Yellow is the colour of turmeric, of Vishnu and of new beginnings, and it is why most families ask for yellow. You do not have to wear one shade: a family in lemon, mustard and marigold photographs better than everyone in the same tone. If yellow does not suit you, peach, coral, mint, pink and white with a yellow border all sit well in the frame.

Most families avoid black at a wedding ritual. Red is usually kept for the bride on the wedding day. For more pairings see our guide to a blouse for a yellow saree.

Fabric: The Most Important Choice

Lemonade plain yellow mul cotton saree by MAYIN for a haldi ceremony

Haldi is usually held in the morning or early afternoon, often outdoors, and the paste is wet, oily and bright. That makes fabric more important than colour. Lemonade is a plain yellow mul cotton saree at Rs 1,699: light, breathable and easy to wash, and a good choice for anyone who will be close to the paste. Amber in yellow mul modal at Rs 1,899 has a softer, more fluid fall and comes with a running blouse piece.

If you are a guest and want something dressier, printed pure chiffon such as Liora, Sunlit Rose and Sun Shower is light and moves well in photos, and every MAYIN pure chiffon is 100% Bemberg chiffon with a 1 metre crepe blouse piece. Handloom linen with a zari border, such as Golden Hour and Buttercream, is crisp and cool. Just sit away from the paste: chiffon and linen are dry clean only. What Turmeric Does to Fabric

Turmeric gets its colour from curcumin, a natural dye that was once used to colour cloth. Three things about it matter on the day.

Six facts about turmeric on cloth
It is a dyeCurcumin binds quickly to cotton and other plant fibres. The longer it sits, the harder it is to remove.
It changes colourCurcumin turns reddish brown with alkaline soap. Do not panic; it returns to yellow when rinsed.
Sunlight fades itCurcumin breaks down in sunlight, which is why sun drying works so well on a washed stain.
The paste is oilyMost haldi pastes carry oil or ghee, so the stain is part dye and part grease.
Zari and sequins sufferOil and turmeric dull metallic zari and sequin thread and cannot be washed out of them at home.
Heat sets itHot water and a hot iron fix the stain into the fibre.
Good to know
Turmeric and oil can mark zari and sequins for good. Keep tissue, zari and sequin sarees for guests seated away from the paste, or change into them for the evening. Miss Earth, our yellow tissue saree with an embroidered border, is a lovely haldi guest saree for exactly that reason: seat yourself where the photos are, not where the paste is.

Removing Turmeric Stains, Step by Step

For mul cotton and mul modal
1
Let it dry, then lift it offDo not rub wet paste. Once dry, brush or scrape away as much as you can with a blunt knife.
2
Rinse from the backHold the stained area under cold running water from the reverse side to push the colour out, not further in.
3
Use a little liquid dish soapWork a drop gently into the stain to cut the oil, and leave it for ten minutes. It may turn reddish; that is normal.
4
Rinse and repeatRinse in cold water and repeat until no more colour comes out.
5
Dry in sunlightDry the stained area in the sun for an hour or two to fade the last of the yellow. Turn deep colours inside out.

Blouses for a Haldi Saree

Keep it simple and comfortable. Short or elbow sleeves keep paste off your cuffs, and a cotton blouse breathes in the morning heat. Mul cotton sarees come without a blouse piece, mul modal comes with 1 metre of running fabric, and our pure chiffon sarees come with 1 metre of crepe.

Four easy pairings
Contrast pink
A hot pink or magenta blouse with mustard or marigold is the most cheerful haldi pairing.
White cotton
Crisp and fresh with lemon or butter yellow, and easy to wash.
Green
Bottle or parrot green with yellow nods to mehendi, if you are wearing one saree for both.
Gold
With peach, mint or ivory, a gold blouse adds festivity without competing with the yellow around you.

Flower Jewellery and Finishing Touches

Haldi is the one ceremony where fresh flowers beat gold. Turmeric and oil are hard on fine jewellery, so most brides wear flower or fabric jewellery and save the gold for the wedding.

The haldi finish
Flower jewelleryMarigold, mogra or rose earrings, maang tikka, bracelets and a choker.
HairA low bun or braid with fresh flowers; open hair catches paste.
MakeupLight and waterproof; the paste will remove the rest.
FeetBarefoot during the ritual, kolhapuris or flats after; you will sit on the floor.
BindiA small bindi; skip anything heavy around the face.
BanglesGlass or lac bangles you do not mind marking.

Questions People Ask

What colour saree should I wear for haldi?

Yellow in any shade, from lemon to mustard and marigold, is the tradition. Peach, coral, mint, pink and white with a yellow border also work. Avoid black at a wedding ritual.

What should the bride wear for haldi?

A light yellow or white cotton saree she can wash or keep as a memento, flower jewellery, and her hair tied back. Many brides choose white so the turmeric shows.

What should guests wear to a haldi ceremony?

A yellow or pastel saree in a light fabric. If you will be close to the paste, choose mul cotton; if you will sit away, printed chiffon, jamdani or linen look dressier.

Which fabric is best for haldi?

Mul cotton and mul modal. They are cool for a morning ceremony and can be hand washed in cold water the same day.

Can I wear a chiffon saree to haldi?

Yes, as a guest seated away from the paste. Chiffon is dry clean only, so a turmeric stain means a trip to the dry cleaner.

Can I wear a tissue or zari saree to haldi?

Only if you will stay away from the paste. Turmeric and oil can mark metallic zari and sequin thread for good.

How do I remove turmeric from a cotton saree?

Let the paste dry and lift it off, rinse from the back in cold water, work in a little liquid dish soap, rinse again and dry the stained area in sunlight. Avoid hot water and chlorine bleach.

Why did the turmeric stain turn red when I washed it?

Curcumin turns reddish brown with alkaline soap. Rinse well and it goes back to yellow, and sunlight then fades it.

Can I wear the same saree for haldi and mehendi?

Yes. A yellow or green cotton saree works for both; switch the blouse and jewellery to change the look.

What jewellery do you wear for haldi?

Fresh flower jewellery in marigold, mogra or rose is the tradition. Keep fine gold for the wedding day.
