Frequently Asked Questions

What is a traditional saree?

Usually a handwoven saree with a defined border and pallu, in a weave or colour tied to a region or ritual, such as Dhakai jamdani or the red and white saree of Bengal. Zari borders and tissue are the festive end of the range.

How can I tell a handwoven saree from a powerloom one?

Handwoven sarees show small irregularities in the weave and along the border that a machine does not produce. Our handloom saree guide explains the other signs to look for.

Which traditional saree suits a festival puja?

A white saree with a red border, a zari stripe on mul cotton or a jamdani all read as traditional. Keep tissue and handloom linen with zari for evening pujas and family functions.

What blouse goes with a traditional saree?

A blouse that picks up the border colour, such as red with a white and red saree or gold with a zari border, in an elbow or three-quarter sleeve. A cotton blouse suits handwoven sarees for daytime rituals.

Do traditional sarees need dry cleaning?

Zari, tissue, jamdani and handloom linen should be dry cleaned. Plain mul cotton such as Devi and Rangam can be hand washed gently in cold water.

Traditional Sarees, Handwoven

A traditional saree is usually a handwoven one, with a border, a pallu and a weave rooted in a particular region. This edit gathers our heritage looks: Dhakai jamdani, mul cotton with zari borders and stripes, the red and white puja saree, tissue, and handloom linen with a zari border. To tell a handloom saree from a powerloom one, read our handloom saree guide, and see all handloom sarees.

Jamdani and the Red and White Saree

In Dhakai jamdani, each motif is added by hand on the loom, so the pattern seems to float on a fine cotton ground. Naples in yellow and Lilac Bloom in lilac are both Dhakai jamdani at ₹4,999; read what is a Dhakai jamdani saree and see all jamdani sarees. The white saree with a red border is the traditional look for Durga Puja in Bengal: Kamakshi is white with a red border and a gold zari edge, and Devi is white mul cotton with gold and red detailing. See Durga Puja sarees.

Zari, Tissue and Handloom Linen

Zari stripes turn light mul cotton into a festive saree: Manjari in red, Saaz in green, Saanjh in black and Siyaahi in multicolour, from ₹2,199 to ₹2,299. Miss Earth, yellow handloom cotton tissue with embroidery and zari, and Silver, handloom linen tissue with zari, carry the sheen of a traditional festive saree. Main Event in burgundy and The Go to in ivory are handloom linen with a zari border at ₹4,299. Browse all zari sarees. For a Kerala look, see our Kerala kasavu sarees and the Onam saree guide.
