Karwa Chauth Saree Guide 2026: Colours, Timings and Looks

Main Event burgundy handloom linen saree with zari border by MAYIN

Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday 29 October 2026. The traditional saree is red, maroon or pink, the colours of a married woman’s solah shringar, worn with gold jewellery, mehendi, sindoor and bangles. Because you fast from sunrise to moonrise, comfort matters as much as colour: a breathable saree for the day and a richer one for the evening puja works best. In Delhi the puja is usually held around 5:40 to 7 PM and the moon is expected at about 8:15 PM, but timings vary by city. This guide covers the timings, colours and their meaning, colours beyond red, fabrics for a fasting day, the two-saree plan, the first Karwa Chauth for a new bride, the solah shringar, blouses, jewellery, complete looks and the questions people ask.

Colours and What They Mean

Red is the colour of a married woman in North Indian tradition: of sindoor, of the wedding lehenga, of strength and of a long, happy marriage. That is why most women wear red or a shade of it on Karwa Chauth, and why many wear their wedding outfit on their first one. Maroon, pink, orange, yellow, green and gold are all considered auspicious too. Black and white are usually avoided because of their link with mourning.

Colours Beyond Red

Six alternatives with meaning
Maroon and wine
Richer and more grown-up than bright red. Main Event, After Hours, True Garnet.
Pink and rani pink
Festive and flattering. Strawberry Sorbet, Raabta, Meera, Elysia.
Gold
Pure festive glow, especially in cotton tissue. Devina, Miss Earth.
Green
Green with gold is auspicious and stands out in a sea of red. Emerald with zari stripes.
Orange and mustard
Warm and bright. Elara in orange chiffon, Golden Hour in mustard linen.
Purple
Royal and unexpected with gold jewellery. Tarini in cotton tissue.

Blouse colours for each are in our guides to a blouse for a red saree and a blouse for a pink saree.

Fabrics for a Fasting Day

You will be without food or water for around fourteen hours, often doing housework, travelling or going to the office before the evening puja. A heavy, hot saree makes a long day longer. Choose fabrics that breathe for the day and keep the sparkle for the evening.

Raabta in pink and Meera in magenta are mul cotton sarees with woven zari stripes: light enough for a fasting day, festive enough for the puja circle.

The Two-Saree Plan

From sargi to moonrise
1
Morning: sargi and the dayA soft mul cotton or mul modal in red or pink. True Garnet or Strawberry Sorbet. Easy to work, travel and rest in.
2
Afternoon: rest and mehendi touch-upsKeep jewellery light. Apply mehendi the day before so it is dark and dry.
3
Evening: the pujaChange into a richer saree: cotton tissue, linen with zari or pure chiffon. Add the full shringar.
4
MoonriseA pinned pallu so you can hold the sieve, thali and diya without worrying about the drape.

Your First Karwa Chauth

Many new brides wear their wedding lehenga or a bridal red saree for their first Karwa Chauth, often with the full set of bridal jewellery, and the sargi usually comes from the mother-in-law. If you would rather wear something lighter, a red or maroon saree with zari, such as Main Event in burgundy linen or Miss Earth in yellow cotton tissue with a red blouse, looks bridal without the weight. For the rest of the first year, read daily wear sarees for a new bride.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • A heavy saree from sunrise. Change for the evening instead.
  • A trailing chiffon pallu near the puja diya. Pin it.
  • Mehendi on the same day; it smudges on the saree.
  • All black or all white.
  • Forgetting to check your city’s moonrise time.
