Pooja Saree Guide: Colours, Navratri 2026 and What to Wear

Devina plain gold mul cotton tissue saree by MAYIN for Diwali pooja

For a pooja, wear a clean, comfortable saree in an auspicious colour: red, yellow, orange, green, pink, white or gold. Most families avoid black for Hindu rituals. Choose cotton if you will sit on the floor for long or stand near a havan or rows of diyas, and keep zari, tissue and linen for evening pujas and festivals such as Diwali. This guide covers what each colour means, the Navratri 2026 colours day by day, what to wear for Lakshmi puja, Dhanteras, Chhath, Satyanarayan katha, griha pravesh and Vasant Panchami, how to cover your head with the pallu, fire safety and the questions people ask.

Colours and What They Mean

The pooja palette
Red
Shakti, marriage and good fortune. Linked with Durga and Lakshmi; the first choice for married women at most pujas.
Yellow
Knowledge, prosperity and Vishnu. Worn for Satyanarayan katha, Vasant Panchami and Thursday prayers.
Orange and saffron
Devotion and sacrifice; the colour of the marigolds on every altar.
Green
New life, harvest and prosperity. A happy choice for griha pravesh and spring festivals.
White
Purity and peace. Worn for Saraswati puja and, with red, for Durga Puja in Bengal.
Pink and gold
Joy and abundance. Pink is a gentle red; gold is the colour of Lakshmi and Diwali.

Black is widely avoided for Hindu rituals because it is associated with mourning and inauspicious days. The notable exception is Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra, when women traditionally wear black sarees, often with halwa jewellery made of sugar-coated sesame, because black absorbs the winter sun. If your family has its own rule, follow it.

Dates follow the most widely used North Indian calendars; regional calendars can differ by a day. Diwali Lakshmi puja muhurat in Delhi is about 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM on Sunday 8 November. Check your local panchang or temple for exact times.

The custom of a colour for each day of Navratri is strongest in Maharashtra and Gujarat and has spread across India. The colours follow the weekday on which Navratri begins, so they change every year. Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday 11 October.

Fabrics for Sitting, Standing and Fire

Devina plain gold mul cotton tissue saree by MAYIN for Diwali pooja

A pooja often means sitting cross-legged on the floor for an hour or more, then standing for aarti with a lit diya, sometimes beside a havan. Mul cotton is the most comfortable and the safest choice: it breathes, stays put, and does not cling. For Diwali and evening pujas, Devina in gold cotton tissue at Rs 2,499 and Tarini in purple give a festive glow and come with a blouse piece.

Best fitAlso works Filled means best fit. Light, flowing pallus move easily in a draught, so pin them near flames.

Crisp fabrics such as tissue and linen slip off the head and need pinning; soft mul cotton and chiffon stay. Read more in what is a mul cotton saree and what is a tissue saree.

Fire Safety With a Saree

Diyas, camphor, havan and incense all mean open flame at floor level, exactly where the pleats and pallu fall. Burns from diyas are a real festival risk, so it is worth knowing the basics.

Before you light a diya
Pin the pallu at the shoulder and again at the waist before aarti; never let it hang loose near a flame.
Tuck the pallu end into the waist while lighting diyas, the way women do in the kitchen.
Keep the pleats off the floor; set the hem just above the ankle.
Choose cotton near a havan; it does not melt onto skin the way synthetic fabric can.
Stand to the side, not over, a row of diyas or a rangoli of lamps.
Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby, and know to stop, drop and roll if cloth catches.

In many North Indian homes and temples, women cover their heads during a pooja. This works best with an open, unpleated pallu in a soft fabric.

Head cover in four steps
1
Leave the pallu openDrape as usual but do not pleat the pallu; leave about a metre free behind you.
2
Bring it over the headFrom behind, lift the pallu over the back of your head so the border frames your face.
3
Pin it in placeFix it to your hair at the crown with a U-pin or two bobby pins so it does not slide during aarti.
4
Settle the endLet the end fall over the right shoulder or tuck it into the waist at the right hip.

Questions People Ask

Which colour saree is best for a pooja?

Red, yellow, orange, green, pink, white and gold are all auspicious. Red suits most pujas for married women; yellow suits Vishnu, Satyanarayan and Saraswati puja.

Can we wear a black saree for a pooja?

Most families avoid black for Hindu rituals. The main exception is Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra, when black sarees are traditional.

What are the Navratri colours for 2026?

Orange on 11 October, then white, red, royal blue, yellow, green, grey, purple and peacock green on 19 October.

What should I wear for Diwali Lakshmi puja?

Red, gold, yellow, pink or green, in your most festive saree. Cotton tissue, linen with zari and zari stripes all suit the evening puja.

What should I wear for a Satyanarayan puja?

Yellow is traditional, in a cotton saree you can sit in comfortably for the katha.

What should I wear for a griha pravesh?

Hosts usually wear a festive saree in red, yellow, green or pink with zari or tissue. Guests can wear softer colours in a comfortable fabric.

Which fabric is best for a pooja?

Mul cotton. It is comfortable for sitting on the floor, safer near flames than flowing fabrics, and stays in place over the head.

Can I wear a printed saree for a pooja?

Yes. Florals, stripes and small prints are all fine; the colour matters more than the pattern.

What do women wear for Chhath puja?

Usually yellow, orange or red cotton sarees, since devotees stand in water at sunrise and sunset. Choose something that dries quickly.

How do I keep my pallu on my head during aarti?

Leave the pallu open, bring it over your head from behind and pin it to your hair at the crown with a U-pin or two bobby pins.
