Saree for the UPSC Interview: Colours, Fabrics and Styling
By Nishita Nathani11 min read
For the UPSC civil services interview, the personality test, wear a plain or very lightly patterned saree in a muted colour: pastel, neutral or a deep but quiet tone such as navy, olive or wine. Choose cotton or handloom linen, a modest blouse with elbow sleeves, tied back hair, small studs and a watch, and closed flats or low heels. There is no official dress code, and the board is assessing you, not your clothes, which is exactly why the saree should be the least remarkable thing in the room: comfortable, pressed and forgotten the moment you sit down. This guide covers what the board actually looks for, colours, fabrics, the blouse, hair and jewellery, footwear, the Delhi weather question, a rehearsal checklist, what to carry, three complete looks and the questions candidates ask.
What the Board Is Actually Assessing
The UPSC personality test is a 25 to 35 minute conversation with a board of five, usually held at the commission’s office in New Delhi between January and April, after the Mains results. The board is testing mental alertness, clarity, balance of judgement and the ability to hold a conversation under pressure. Clothes enter that assessment only at the edges: does the candidate look composed, is she comfortable, has she dressed with care for a formal occasion. A saree answers all three by default, which is why it is the most common choice for women candidates, and why the specific saree matters far less than how settled you are in it.
The Unwritten Rules

Colours That Work
Neutrals and pastels read as calm and are the most common choice. A deep, quiet colour reads as confident and photographs well under office lighting; navy and olive in particular look serious without looking severe. Pure white and pure black both work with the right blouse, though many candidates prefer a softer tone: ivory instead of white, navy or charcoal instead of black. Toasted Almond, Dusty Rose, Cocoa, Lilac Blush, Mint Meadow, Cobalt Crumble, Olive Oasis and Twilight Bloom are all plain cottons in interview colours.
Fabrics
Mul cotton is the lightest and most comfortable, and a plain colour in cotton looks exactly right. Mul modal has the advantage of creasing very little, so the saree still looks pressed after a two hour wait. Handloom linen such as The Go To in ivory, Beige, Power Play in blue or Line Item with thin black stripes has the most structure and the most formal fall, and its fine zari border is quiet enough for the room. Read what a handloom linen saree is and mul cotton versus mul modal.

Hair, Makeup and Jewellery
Footwear and Bag
Closed shoes: ballet flats, loafers or block heels under two inches, in black, tan or nude. You will walk a corridor, wait, stand when the board enters and sit for half an hour; the shoes must be silent and forgettable. Set the saree hem with these shoes on. Carry a plain structured bag or folder in black or tan with your documents, pins and a bottle of water; leave anything with logos or embellishment at home.
Delhi Between January and April
A plain shawl in ivory, beige, grey or navy over a saree looks composed in the waiting area and can be folded over the arm as you enter. Our winter saree guide has layering ideas; for the interview keep the layer plain.
Rehearse in the Saree
The drape itself is in our guide to how to drape a mul cotton saree. Pleat and pin the pallu fully; an open pallu is for weddings, not the board room.
What to Carry
Three Complete Looks
Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying a new saree and wearing it for the first time on the day. Rehearse in it.
- Shine. Tissue, sequins, zari borders wider than a finger and glossy finishes all catch the light.
- A loose pallu. Pin it; you should never need to touch it.
- Dangling earrings. They move every time you nod.
- Heels you have not walked in. The corridor is long and the floor is hard.
- Dressing for the weather you expect rather than the date you have. Check the forecast the night before.

Questions Candidates Ask
Is there a dress code for the UPSC interview?
No official dress code. Formal wear is expected. For women a plain saree in a muted colour, or a formal suit, is the norm.
Which colour saree is best for the UPSC interview?
Pastels and neutrals such as beige, powder blue, mint, lilac and dusty rose, or a deep quiet colour such as navy, olive or wine. Avoid neon, bright red and anything shiny.
Can I wear a cotton saree to the UPSC interview?
Yes. Cotton and handloom linen are the most appropriate fabrics: formal, comfortable and still.
Can I wear a printed saree?
A very small, quiet print or thin stripes is fine. Large florals, bright polka dots and bold checks are not.
Should I wear a saree or a suit?
Either is acceptable. Wear what you are most composed in. A saree is the most common choice and reads as formal by default.
What blouse should I wear for the interview?
Elbow or three quarter sleeves, a modest neck, in ivory, white, black, navy or a matching shade. Lined cotton.
What jewellery for the UPSC interview?
Small studs and a watch. At most one thin bangle or a plain ring. No dangling earrings or stacks.
What shoes with a saree for the interview?
Closed flats, loafers or block heels under two inches, in black, tan or nude.
Can I wear black to the UPSC interview?
Yes, with a light blouse. Many candidates prefer navy or charcoal, which look softer under office light.
How do I keep the saree in place for forty minutes?
Pleat and pin the pallu at the shoulder, pin the pleats at the waist, use a cotton petticoat, and rehearse sitting and standing in it a week before.
What should I wear for a January interview in Delhi?
A full sleeve blouse, a thermal under it, and a plain shawl or cardigan in ivory, grey or navy that you can fold over your arm in the room.
